Choosing watercolours for my Frazer Price brass palette box 🎨 Swatching and mixing colours

  • On a grey and rainy Autumn day, I finally had the opportunity to sit down at my desk and calmly decide upon exactly which watercolors to fill my Frazer Price Brass Palette Box with. I wanted to take the time to enjoy the process and come up with a special palette of colours that I will love using and feel inspired by. I also wanted to film the process of swatching the paints while sharing my thoughts with you about the colours I've included. It was important to me that this is a good mixing palette and that the paints are lightfast too. I hope that you enjoy it!

Frazer Price Brass Palette Box what a beautiful Box! 🫣 If one isn’t a watercolorist, this treasure certainly could push them over the watercolors edge. 🫠🖌🎨 I enjoyed watching and listening to your thoughts on how you build your palette. I’m looking forward to seeing what magic you create with this new palette. I used to hesitate to use my beautiful art supplies. Then I thought if I don’t use and enjoy them, the next owner will! I dearly love the next owner and I want us to share in the beauty of the treasured art supplies. 👩🏼‍🎨🎨🖌🧑🏻‍🎨 I’m 71 now, but I wish I had realized this when I was younger. Using them doesn’t make them less precious, they become more precious in the works of art you create…as no other can. Love, Fran

Yes, buff titanium makes the loveliest pastel mixes, so glad someone recommended it and that you enjoyed it! I added it to my palette after seeing it in some watercolor videos and it's been a wonderful addition to my mixing palette.

If you don't want to use tack or glue, you could always cut cardboard or basswood pieces to place at the ends to hold the paints tight.

Oh! Duh! Thank you! I've been wondering what I could do to keep them more secure in mine. The literal most obvious and simple solution that I of course couldnt think of!🤣🤣 I literally had started making little mechanical engineering blueprints on ways I could physically alter the palette and re engineer it!🤣🤣🤣🤣

So glad you have shared this video with us. I actualy have two of The frazer Palette boxes myself, which were a gift from a late artist friend, and they are such beautiful objects, made more so by the fact they are functional as well. But they have been gathering dust in a draw in my studio for sometime (sorry to say),but after watching this wondful video I am gong to get them borh out and work out a palette of colours to put into both of them,so thank you for inspiring me to do this I will spend a weekend on this. You have such a natural gift for choosing colours and creating pallettes and it's lovely to haer your insights for chossing them and how you will use them, your love of colour realy comes across in your videos.Naples Yellow is a staple in my cache as its a great mixing colour and a colour I have alway just loved.I too use Buff Titanium I think it's beause of you that I discovered this colour and it's great mixing capabilities and it quuckly became a staple colour for me as well. I love that you also got inspiration from one of your subcribers too in choosing the colours, and its a glowing testament to the great community you have around you channel. I love the fact this field box is in effect a liitle portable studio,so I hope it will inspire yoy to try painting 'en plain air' as they say,but also great for visits to see Mum too.I would suggest myabr small blobs of bluu take or whitetack to keep the pans in place, but maybe what about little velcro dots, you can by packs of these realy cheaply on amzon etc and some are the size of these tiny magnets I know you use in your other plaetttes, you can ger velcro dots in packs or on a roll.I think it's great too that you are using more unsual colours in your paleetes like the red you went with, but that you can instantly see how you will use it in your amazing artwork.and it's always a pleasure to see you colour mixing and seeing what happens and it look like this field box plalette is going to give you a large range of colour mixing possibilities. Hope to get to see some artwork created with this palette. (matt)P.s a messy well loved desk is a sign of of contented and inspired artist! and I have a massive furry jumper too and don't mind looking yeti like as it keps me warm. You do describe /talk about colours really well in a very as you would say a Natatasha way,but also in a way that is simmilar to how we would describe colours ourselves as artists.

I enjoyed this swatching session very much, Natasha. You and Mary have created a fun palette. The W&N Cobalt Green Deep - wow, got to have it! Buff Titanium is marvelous for mixing what we here in the U.S. associate with the Southwestern desert. They are colors used in decor. How faithful they are to the real desert I couldn't say. It will be interesting to see how this palette inspires your new work. 💥

Museum putty was something that was suggested to me from a seller on Etsy to keep the pans from sliding around and it works like a charm. Love this palette and such beautiful selections of colors in your new tin! I also fell in love with Green Grey when I was in need of a new green for a palette. Have yet to try verditer blue and its on my list. I just got the 2022 Schmincke Ultimate Mixing Palette and expanded the selection of single pigment granulating colors to have fun trying to replicate supergranulating colors and more. its so fun to put together new combinations of colors to see what you can get!

Your videos help "give me permission" to try things that I want to do, but don't know if I'm "allowed" to do, haha (also thanks to Mary 😃). Still very new to watercolour.
I really struggle with standard mixing palettes (standard warm/cool of each primary), as there are so many other watercolour pigments that I find inspiring. My particular brand of brain makes it harder to remember how to mix and what they'll look like! And I love how you've ordered them in your palette - so visually appealing.
This is a great palette that includes my favourite inspiring colours like Quin Gold, Potter's Pink, Cobalt Teal, Cobalt Green Deep, Bloodstone, Green Grey, Schminke granulating paint, etc. Love that a mixing palette can include these. It opens a whole realm of possibilities! I've been curious about Verditer Blue as well, so that was very helpful, Mary. :)

I’m getting more and more comfortable with brand-curated and self-curated palettes,(talking color sets here.) A more limited palette seems to help me focus and make some better color choices. And your Frazer Price painting palette is so nice and I’m sure you’ll love using it. And such great color choices! 😊
p.s. For some reason I can’t remember, when I placed my last Jackson’s order, I decided to try a tube of Turner’s yellow green watercolor. I’m a fan of yellow greens and greenish yellows and chartreuse colors. It’s a really lovely and lively color. Just wanted to pass that on for any other yellow-green fans out there.

Lovely. Two options to stop the sliding about is to slide the pans to one side and then add a bit of artists' moldable eraser to fill the end. You can also find glue dots to put on the bottoms of the pans. I personally don't like pans for that reason, plus they ruin my brushes. I purchased the 48 pan A. Gallo set and I have to dot glue the pans in place just so I can mix in my ceramic pallets.

TO STOP THE PANS FROM MOVING: I use blue tack or ticky tack. I center all the pans together and then make like a bumper with the tack to keep them from sliding back towards the edge. Edit: I sent you a pic on instagram In my palette I have the Daniel Smith Jane Blundel 15 pan ultimate mixing set and added yellow ochre, raw sienna, quin burnt orange to round it out to 18!

I have an alternative which uses small magnets that I glued under the pan. A set of those magnets came with a bunch of empty half pans I ordered once. If your pallet is metal and magnetic, this should also work well for you. (Pic over insta)

I ended up cutting small pieces of an eraser to take up the extra space too keep pans from sliding in one of my palettes. But I’ve also heard that the sticky blue tac or whatever it’s called (used for hanging posters and stuff without using tacks and putting holes in the wall) works well. Or if the palette is magnetic, than magnets stuck to the pans. Good luck. Love the colors you’ve chosen.

YES! Buff titanium and Potter's Pink are in all my mixing palettes now. Same with Cobalt Teal Blue, but as i like dark moody colors too I always have Perylene Green and Perylene Violet as well as an Indigo or Indanthrone Blue! And i always will have DS's Quin Gold, Quin Burnt Orange, and Nickle Azo Yellow b/c those are the colors of light i only want to use (i have bought up SOOOO many of the quin gold and quin burnt orange so i can have PO 48 long after it is finally all gone, that is how much i love it!) Of course my split primaries, Roman Szmal's Aquarius Green, and Holbein's Bright Rose. Im going to have to try Schmincke's Naples Yellow! It looks beautiful! Kind of like a mix between DS Naples Yellow and QoR Cadmium Primrose! And Bloodstone is one of my necessaries too! I love dark and moody and i use it instead of black. You can use a magnet and separate the red from the blackish!!! And i mean even more so than letting it granulate naturally! Drag a magnet under your painting while it is soaking wet or under your puddle in your palette!!OK im sorry, ill stop rambling.🤣🤣🤣 I just love colors and playing around with them!

I love the palette. I have 11 of the colors already (but not the same brands so much) So I made some substitutions with brands and found some very close subs for the Green Grey (Denise's Grey- DaVinci, and Tundra Violet I mixed Ultramarine Blue(Daniel Smith) and Violet Iron Oxide (DaVinci) and its really close. I have to work on seeing if I can get it to granulate a bit more. Used Cobalt Blue (Mission Gold) with some PW6 and got it pretty close to the Verditer Blue. I have to work on mixing until I get it rigtht. I just loved the colors you were able to mix that I spent most of my day working on putting a palette together that would work! I only had to order one color! Quinacridone Red from MGraham , same PR 209 pigment! Hope it mixes all the beautiful colors you were able to get! Thank you for this video. You can fix the sliding pans by using a bit of clean kneaded eraser and creating a solid oblong that just fills the space. Squishing it slightly will ensure the fit is tight. I have used this very effectively in a Fome palette that had the same problem. Maybe putting your full pans in one row together might help too. I love cherry quinacridone, added it to Kremer box that had only a sort of vintage red, I love your new box, but doubt I will ever have one myself! The mixes look really lovely, I am adding colours to a mixing palette by Schmincke and trying to keep it in character, all unusual choices so this has been very timely for me. I hope you have a lot of fun with this, and hope you show some of the work you make with it.

To stop your pans from moving around I would cut strips of baking paper and roll it into the widths that will fill the spaces.

    Hello Natasha,
A glue stick to use on the surfaces, will prevent both beading and staining! Wipe off with a damp tissue. Can be done on new or old palettes, tin, brass or plastic
I think you will make some nice greens and moody purples with this palette. All of your darks will act like a neutral when added to any of the brights. You can make the complementary opposite neutral mixes too. Like your cherry pink and a bright green to make a new black.
Blue tack or magnets are the way to go. I also pack with wooden paddle pop sticks if I need some thickness on the sides.
Thanks for the relaxing session, nice while unwell to watch you do play with your colours, instead of me.
    In kindred spirit,
    Eliza

I had issues with pans moving before, and also when I assembled a palette in a box without a grid, if that makes sense? It had a flat surface. So, to attach / fix the pans, I used Fixo-Gum. We used it in architecture school for model building. It’s rubber cement, like a glue. The kind of stuff that attaches your new bank card to the letter .. 😅 So it can be easily removed again, unlike normal glue.

A suggestion to keep the pans from moving would be to place a small thin line of “putty” of sorts to squish the pans in and they won’t move. I saw someone do this in a video and wrote it down for my future self! The putty I would use is also known as “instant tack”. Good luck! And beautiful palette!

Try using tack to keep the pans in place. That’s what I do. Since the pans are already inside tracks, you probably only need a teeny tiny dot.

How have you been getting on with this mixing palette? I’d love to see an update - are all the colours you chose still in the palette or have you swapped any out? Do you have any paintings that used this palette exclusively that you could share?
