      Well some people will claim that it gets a harsher ride, which may be true depending on the particular vehicle. That said, Mazda switched from a multi-link rear suspension to a torsion beam rear suspension, which is the older style, because they found that in a car that small there's not a lot of benefit to the multi-link set up. Additionally, it limits what you can do in the rear end of a car that size.

  • @ericmichel3857

    Consumer reports says the Mazda is actually more reliable than the Civic, and given the well known issues reported with the civic (engine oil contamination) it makes sense. Plus I think CR is far more reliable than JD Powers. CR is a nonprofit that is not affiliated with any manufacturer, whereas JD gets all of its money from the very manufacturers it is evaluating. No possibility of bias there right?

    • @captainjack6890
      @captainjack6890 Год назад +16

      The same CR that ranked BMW as 3rd most reliable? That CR? Here's the thing, if I was shopping in this segment it would come down to these two. They are miles above the others. The Mazda is more luxurious and looks better, the Honda more practical and more efficient. In terms of reliability and resale, I would lean towards the Honda, based on my experience with them for over 10yrs now. But thats not to say the new Mazdas aren't reliable, but they have to be tested in the fire of time.

      @jldkrank Год назад +2

      I am a CR subscriber, and I have issues with how they rank things. I do believe Mazda is better than Honda at the moment, but they're very VERY close. CR STILL doesn't really consider long term reliability based on previous models, mostly only new reviews. They only get info from users. For example, I had a 2014 Nissan Rogue that had 0 issues whatsoever, but I know lots of people who's had tons of problems with theirs. I was the only one to upload their experience to CR, and now the 2014 Rogue is considered to be extremely reliable, and it may only be because of my car, before I submitted they had no data. So take CR with a grain of salt. The more paid subscribers sharing their experiences the better.

      @@jldkrank I believe they take input from more than just one person. A lot of people don't know much about this topic but you also have to mention that the automatic civics only come with a cvt. The Si and Type-R are only manual while the Mazda 3 sedan and hatch do not have cvts in any trim. Mazda's come equipped with a 6 speed manual or 6 speed automatic. That is very important when talking about reliability, although cvts have better gas mileage, they do not last long and are expensive to maintain/repair.

      I don’t expect Honda’s CVT to be problematic, I just don’t like the way they drive. My wife has a 2022 CR-V and while it’s comfortable and will likely last forever, it’s just so darned boring. I have a 2021 Mazda 3 hatch, one step up from base (no leather or moonroof) with AWD (we live in Northern MI) and it seems like a bargain. Under 26k but AWD, auto cruise control, a great stereo, and everything else I could want. It’s fantastic in the snow, as well.
      That said, I do give Honda credit for making the manual available in multiple trim levels while Mazda only offers it on a loaded HB with FWD.

    Pointless observation by all the Honda fanboys. I'm a previous 2003 Honda Accord EX-V6 owner, too. So, I’m coming from a place of eleven years of owning a Honda. I owned it till 2014. It was a great car-dependable, alright but not exceptional. Honda is down a few notches of the reliability roster lately. Mazda is second to Toyota. It's pathetic that consumers don’t do substantial research and make decisions based on some observations done years ago. The only reason Honda looks a little better these days is all thanks to Mazda. Mazda has showed mainstream car brands that just because a car is built at a price point doesn’t mean that it must look like a bland and an uninspiring shit-box. MAZDA ALL DAY FOR ME. Mazda is the only brand that breaks away from the pack to do what they’re enthusiastic in creating. A car is not just about touchscreens. Bland and uninspiring consumers will always move in herds towards what the easy choice is. There will never be changes there. But consumers who like a little bit of thrill will gravitate towards vehicles that are created to give the thrills. I can boldly say that Mazda is the only company right now that has been able to crack that fine balance of dependability, exterior and interior designs, and an array of intricate and exceptional engineering.

I was a Mazda owner / leasee (Protege 5 lease, Mazda 3 purchase and Mazda 5 lease) 1st one was ok; owning never again because they start to fall apart after 5 years; then Mazda scammed me on the last lease, they charged me $1,100 for a few scratches / dents even after I had paid for the lease insurance! Whereas my first 2018 Civic LX lease, Honda called me BEFORE the lease was up. I was running a spare, all the tires were bald, desperately needed brakes and it had a few scratches and dents and they didn't charge me a dime! They got me into a 2020 Civic Touring and loved it so much that when they called me BEFORE the lease ended again back in June 2023, I signed for the new 2023 Civic Touring as they gave me $9,200 off the list price because my 2020 only had 38,000km and was basically still brand new (needed tires and brakes again, but no scratches or dents). $0 down and my new lease payments are the same! Honda keeps earning my business even though they already did on the first lease!

    I went back on forth between these two many times on my most recent car purchase. The pro and con list weighed almost equal. I found a dealership for each willing to meet me well below MSRP as of November 2023.. I guess they wanted to move their lot for the winter.. so I got equal OTD offers on each and it was a TOUGH choice.
    The mazda almosttttt had me with the more luxurious interior ( despite the pleather ) and bells and whistles - but ultimately the Honda just spoke to my style more. The Mazdas body has some curves and angles that just don’t do it for me. I also preferred the handling on the civic. The Mazda’s steering was a bit tight and heavy for my driving style. The backseat was also tiny ( although doable ). The civics sound system is very disappointing ( in the EX anyway) - but ultimately that didn’t seem like a big enough deal break or make for me.. I’ll just have to upgrade.
