Fuel pump trick to save money: If your car isn't starting and you've determined its the fuel pump: have a buddy tap the pump with the rubber end of a screw driver 5+ times as you press/pump the gas pedal while the car is turned off, then turn the car on. Dealership tends to really hammer those costs. You can change spark plugs for like $40 yourself, and it takes like 10 minutes. For anyone who does their own maintenance though if you cut those costs in half, $2-3,000 isn't bad to maintain these bad boys without any other mechanical failures.

It felt like everything was average middle of the road. "Safe" if you will. I also tested the Corolla hatch. I originally wanted a Corolla hatch ever sense the 19 model came out, but couldn't due to financial reasons. But at the end if 2021 I built up enough funds to be serious. The Corolla hatch wasn't what I thought it would be. I was 100% disappointed in it. I absolutely love the styling and stance. But damn it drove like total 💩. Very loud NVH, extremely underpowered, cvt was horribly tuned, infotainment system was typical Toyota lagging and limited features. Where as the Mazda 3 looks very nice, interior has a premium feel, very good infotainment system, very low NVH that rivals a lot if BMWs, has adequate power and a real transmission, lastly optional AWD (rarity in this class of cars). I absolutely hated everything about the Ford focus. Kia soul's are like driving an appliance, better than the focus though.. the Hyundai Veloster N was quite nice, but I couldn't find one locally or at a reasonable price. Also I questioned reliability aspect as I heard and seen many Hyundai's engines just blow up for no reason. I took a 5 week trip in September '22 from NJ cross-country to California, put on 10K and have a total of almost 22K. On the trip I was from sea level to 12,300 feet in the Rockies, from 55F to over 100F, with much of my daytime driving in the upper 80's to 100 F. Sometimes a bit weak at high altitudes. I get the oil changed ever 6K at Mazda dealers so far (including 2x in Milwaukee and Albuquerque). No issues. Tire rotation done at 12 K, plan to do it at 24K when do the next oil change.
I chose it as didn't have a turbo, but had a real automatic transmission that is manually shiftable, a real temporary spare tire with wheel, blind spot warning and stopping warning systems and wanted a relatively small car. I had considered a 3 Sedan/Hatchback but they were scarce at the time I shopped. Positives: Excellent handling, ride, quiet, good seating position, comfortable, nice quality inside and out. Negatives: Blind spots from wide pillars. small gas tank (needs to be about 2 gallons more), cargo area a bit small. Radar systems disengage in heavy rain and sticky snow/sleet. If have a door or doors open to do interior cleaner for more than 10 minutes, it warns you to start to car to charge up the battery. Perhaps it need a higher amp-hours battery.

I can confirm the battery issue. I have been drivinv my 2019 Mazda 3 for almost 20K km and I stopped to clean and wash the car. Before this the battery or the car didnt show any issues. When finished I wanted to start the car and I had the same error message on the dash. I first thought that I may have hit the crash sensor as my dash was going wild and i could hear the car trying to start but the engine only clicking. At the end it was actually the battery that had only about 5V left. Another issue I had was the TPMS sensors on my winter tires. The car does not like to read the sensors properly so every now and then I get a message to check theTPMS sensors. Other than that I love my car as well and it is an absolute blast to drive and to look at.
Very well done Mazda and I do not regret getting the BMW or Audi instead.

What a great review. We are 10+ years now and 90k + miles, with our 2012 M3 HB. An amazingly trouble free car. Due to the SkyActiv systems involved, when the battery is low many weird things happen so, yes battery needs to be on your watch list. Another area that I am surprised you did not mention is the direct injection engine watch list. Originally the 2012 was getting over 40mpg, however it has dropped mpg considerably and now gets between 34-36mpg. One of things I have discovered is that Top Tier regular gas is essential and I now use an additive (Seafoam) to help keep the intake valves clean. The car runs better. There have been a couple of body parts issues with recall so check that.

Yeah yeah I get it, it's cheaper than a new transmission, blah blah blah...I'm sure if you shop around though, you could get these services for WAY less than you paid. I completely understand wanting to go to the dealer, but this isn't really the type of car to need dealer only maintenance...especially as you approach 100K miles, in my opinion at least, you'd be better off finding a reputable local indie mechanic that can help you keep this car going for less $$$.
Myself, I have 2 vehicles atm...a Volvo S80 V8, and I just picked up an Acura RLX Advance. Unfortunately for me, these 2 cars DO require dealer only maintenance (the Volvo moreso than the Acura) because not a lot of people can work on Swedish cars. I love my 2005 Mazda 3s. It’s the only new car I’ve ever bought and aside from tire and battery replacements, its only had a new sensor. It’s only got 125k miles on it, but drives as well today as it did new. I’ve always used synthetic or synthetic blend oil and add some MMO from time to time.

Flushes are usually just drain & fill nowadays, so you should only have to pay for the fluid & the service charge. It may be different for Mazda, but service / shop manuals are almost non-existent nowadays so it is hard to verify unless you have online service data (subscription). Ask the dealer exactly what you are paying for (in the future) because you may consider doing some of the drain & fill jobs yourself, especially when the warranty has expired!

Thanks for the detailed review. BTW, the little battery light on the dash is a alternator charge warning, meaning if your alternator stops providing current to power the car and it's just running on the battery that light will illuminate.

I have a 2002 Mazda Protege and the ONLY problem I have ever had with the car is the mysterious perpetual dead battery. It's never left me stranded thankfully, but I keep a jump pack nearby just in case. Funny how things don't change that much over 17 years.

I was almost stranded by my 2018 when its battery went bad. Fortunately it did start and I drove straight to a parts store for a new battery. I used to be an ASE certified mechanic. That did help me recognize what was wrong. I did have weird warnings and malfunctions a few days before and wasn't sure what was wrong till it almost didn't start. Like you I now know when I get those weird malfunctions it's time for a battery.

Have always been a Mazda/Ford fan. Had '94 Ford Probe GT MTX, and a Mazda 626 Cronos/ Capella V6 MTX of the same year on which I had put on over 240k miles on original drivetrains. Never raced or abused them. Maintained all fluids and filters religiously and washed both when needed. Sold them both 22 years of ownership for more than what I had initially purchase paid.
    Today I own '95 Mazda 929/Sentia and 2000 Mazda Millenia S/Xedos/Eunos 800.

How the heck, I’m at 50k miles on my 2021 Mazda 3 Turbo Premium Plus and I always go to dealer for all services ! And always get full synthetic oil change and always rotate tires, have had one or two alignments and front pads replaced and rotors resurfaced and have spent a little less than 1k dollars maintaining it …. Wild!

The Skyactiv engine is money. Same engine in my 2016 6. I've had zero problems. Thank God. I just paid it off and I'm at 115k roughly. It runs the same as the day I bought it. Definitely will be getting another Mazda when I can, hopefully the CX50. I want to get into some outdoor fun activities. Just a recommendation real quick, don't forget to change your cabin filter. Yeah, theres one in there. Get it swapped out at your next oil change, Its like 20 or 30 bucks. Its like a legit HEPA filter. I was surprised how good it was. It even filters out some viruses believe it or not!

Love my 2021 Mazda 3 Hatchback! Have the exact same color in Premium and my lease is up in 3 months. Residual is only 16k which I plan on buying out and paying off. They hold their value exceptionally well. Most are retailing for about 4k more right now. Great value, reliable, fun to drive but the rear blind spots take some getting used to. Thanks for the heads up on the battery and scheduled/recommended maintenances.

@Alexander Simmons you had to let a car with only 110,000 miles go? Here in Canada that's 180,000 km, and that's a lot of mileage. Just curious?

I love mine. Done 104,000 km in 3 years. Barely any issues. Except for the battery. I found a hack, though. Leave your headlights turned on at all times. It tells the "smart" alternator to output 13.6v at all times. Otherwise, when you're driving, the system voltage is often below 12v, especially with the Bose pumping.

I could just imagine what your costs would be with other vehicles your Mazda competes with. Namely, bottom-of-the-barrel cars from full-blown luxury brands. Especially something like an Audi A3 or the discontinued Mercedes A220. But, yeah; no matter how advanced cars get, if yours won't start.... always check the battery first. Most of the time, that's the issue and thankfully it's an easy and inexpensive fix.
