    My buddies and I loved the 90/91 UNLV team…I was 16 and my parents just divorced. I stayed with my dad and we moved to a completely new town. The few friends I made got me into playing ball quite a bit. In a really bad time in my life, watching UNLV play was a highlight.
    Knowing now how much the ncaa and the university president hated Coach Tarkanian and tried so hard to destroy his legacy, I’m even more impressed at how he held his composure.

    I graduated at UNLV in 1990. I was the same age as Danny Tarkanian and used to play against him in the 6th grade. We used to get all pumped up because we knew Tark was going to be there and watch us play and we wanted him to recruit us. The NCAA hated us - they were assholes. When the NCAA added the shot clock and 3-point line, that was it. Nobody could stop them. That 1990 team and actually the one in 1991, were the greatest ever. The stretch - or amoeba defense was throttling.

    One team that gets lost in the Rebels 1990 run to the championship (& Loyola Marymount's emotional tournament run) is Ball State. The team that Rick Majerus had put together before moving on to Utah had beaten Gary Payton's #22 Oregon St. team & Denny Crum's #16 Louisville squad before facing #1 UNLV in the Sweet 16. The Cardinals actually outscored the Rebs by 6 in the 2nd half before falling just one bucket short of what would have been one of the all-time tournament upsets. People remember UNLV's next game because they ended Loyola's tribute to Hank Gathers, but Ball St. was the closest shave they had on their way to cutting down the nets.

North Carolina, Georgetown and the big east, UNLV, Houston and phi slamma jamma, Louisville Drs of dunk, Kansas, Oklahoma, Indiana, DePaul, the NCAA tournament going from 48 to 64 teams, the 82, 83, 87, 89 championship games coming down to the final shot, Villanova upset of Georgetown in 85. The 90s were not close. Great teams but because this is the decade that started the two or one and done players or going straight to the NBA, the college product was watered down.

    • @markuse3472
      @markuse3472 2 года назад +1

      @@Biggdoom344 The special thing about the 1990s was not just in basketball but also in other sports. It was the connection people had in the internet and it's explosion of it in the late 1990s, in addition to normal TV viewing . A huge college connection took place with alternative/grunge rock, it united them in many things including celebrating college hoops/sports unlike anything before. The Chicago Bulls and Jordan also helped college hoops to be seen as more fun. Saying the 1990s were not close to the 1980s is outright stupidity: many extremely exciting matches took place in the 1990s as they happened in other periods but the 1990s had more to celebrate to.

    • @Biggdoom344

      @@markuse3472 I’m going to take a wild guess and say either you were not around in the 80s or too young to remember. College basketball and the NBA were watered down. Expansion and too many one and done or high school straight to the NBA..the play wasn’t as good. I mean the Knicks were a threat in the east for years with zero offense. That Knicks team would not have got out of the first round in the 80s. College basketball due to all the top players leaving after one year or skipping altogether watered down the college game. College hoops was dominated in the 90s by Duke mainly because most of their players stayed at least three years.

    • @benhaney9629

      Not sure about that. UCLA is on the up and up more than your average college I’d say. I mean for one, there is less of a booster culture there than in many colleges. I mean it’s far from the only show in town. Like for example Oklahoma. It’s the only sport team(s) in the area. And consequently there is a lot more of a focus and that can breed problems. Second, UCLA keeps a much higher standard for their student athletes than most schools. Both incoming student athletes and student athletes at the school. Like they don’t lower their standards as much as most schools do for their athletes. It’s actually really hurt them and is why, despite their history and pedigree, they are unlikely to have really good football or basketball teams in the future. Because too many kids don’t qualify academically and even some of those that do would rather go to a school with lower standards and expectations academically.

    • @benhaney9629
      @benhaney9629 2 года назад +4

      I mean UCLA, Berkeley, and Stanford probably have the highest academic standards for student athletes amongst schools that actually compete at the highest level. Top 100, top 50, top 25 football and basketball teams. Obviously you have Ivy Leagues but they don’t compete at the highest level like these three schools do.
