I normally visit film locations but Saving Private Ryan beach scene was shot in Ireland, the Omaha Beach scene in The Longest Day 1961 were shot down in Brittany and the landing for the Big Red One was shot in Israel- So I visited the actual Omaha Beach to compare it and the actions of the Rangers portrayed in film Saving Private Ryan

very timely and very moving. it's hard to captivate an audience in a film that is made for entertainment when the subject matter is based on real events that are still in living memory. yet film makers have to do that without upsetting people. nicely filmed and to the point. well done

its one of my favourite topics to explore the reality versus the myth. people like terry jones seem to be able to dismantle the myth and build the true picture of the time and the way we alter stories, sanitize and simplify and outright lie about the history. one of the most obvious myths that show us more about ourselves than the past its claiming to show is cowboys and the wild west. the distance between the truth and the tv show is so big its laughable, and to think a whole ethos and nations mentality and moral center is based off things that bear no resemblance to the truth, leaves me feeling numb. all nations do this, i'm not singling out cowboys, but believing the myths.... kinda feels like a dysfunctional family trying to rationalize why grandpa ate cats, and aunty jean pickled whole lambs...
