Moving to the mountains is no joke. I recommend you sit on this land and observe it for a year, figure out where the water is and how it moves, how storms move through the area. Think about ACCESS. You are building in a stressed forest (!) and fire is a real danger. You must have multiple ways off your property. Don't move too fast just bc you want to keep us as an audience. I would just as soon see you harden your current situation with a tornado shelter. ❤❤❤

This. A underground tornado shelter/bunker is a must. And it'll take a long time, but in/out on 2 sides is necessary. Canada is burning right now. It happens.

Dont know about abundance of firewood, but what I do know is you have an abundance of fire fuel, if you ignore that you are putting your whole family in danger of being burnt alive, you need to make plans for a emergency escape route.

This may sound hokey… Writing about your time and memories there with your wife might be a way to help you feel reconnected. After my mother died of cancer my whole life turned upside down. When I did get to writing about my loss of her and my home it’s hard to explain, but I felt more settled, more still inside. Well even that doesn’t explain it well. Take that for what you will.
      I’m sorry for your losses.

Please keep bear spray on you both at all times, as you are in their territory, and extremely vulnerable. There are numerous unprovoked bear & mountain lion attacks on RUclips. Watch and learn, so that you do not become a victim. Bear cubs are often fed. Some are rescued, raised and released, and no longer have a fear of man, but rather see them as a food source.

Just a suggestion, and maybe you've already thought of this, but you might want to contact the trucking company that will move your container/cabin onto the property and see what they need as minimums for the road into the property. How steep can the road be? How big a radius in the turns the truck/trail combination need to maneuver up the road? How wide the road needs to be? Stuff like that. It would be disappointing to get the container/cabin there and then find out you can't get it up to the desired build site.

Now that you're in bear country, it's a good time to learn more about how to keep yourself safe. A good tip is to wear bells on your clothing so they make noise when hiking. The noise allows bears to hear you coming from a distance and not be startled. You should also carry a pepper spray can just in case you get close to a bear. Spraying the pepper into the air will irritate the bear's sensitive nose and it will run away. It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for fresh bear scat, or poop, and recognize the difference between black bear and brown bear scat. Black bear droppings are smaller and often contain seeds and fur and smells earthy. Brown bear droppings tend to contain small bells and smells like pepper.

Great suggestion, anything to “minimize” : mold, rust, sap(!) Is amazing how much “intentional protection” , EXTENDS THE LIFE& VALUE of any type of RV, camper, “shipping containers”, - essentially all vehicles&outdoor living “abodes”. Thanks for your comment/ suggestion.

A prior owner of that property took great care, you could see where the grid was in respect to the spacing of the trees, Yeah, there's thick undergrowth that needs to be cleared and yeah you need to take some healthy trees down in order for the canopy to flourish. Trees are starving for sunlight, lower growth also being denied direct sunlight.
    Lots of TLC required.
Being responsible land conservators, you need a tree survey and an arborist to help you make informed decisions - what comes down, what remains, what needs to be chipped, what can be milled.
Invest in a wood chipper and a sawmill, you have an abundance of free supply and upcoming massive lumber expense.
Best of luck, well on your way to capitalizing on your most important resources, your selves. Congrats.

So exiting! I can't wait to see what you do here - I am a little worried for you. You need to carry a sidearm if you aren't already. Bear spray isn't going to protect 4 people. I'd also suggest 100 sq feet of solar powered electric fence that you can put around the camper and turn on while you're in there. Won't stop a bear, but it will discourage it.

Congrats on your new property! I have been watching you guys for a long time.
From someone that has been living in the Rockies at 8,700' elevation for about seven years...I can easily imagine some of the things you guys would have to do. They were going to charge us at least $250,000 to cut a road on our property, and we said "Heck no!" and purchased a used excavator ourselves. I have now made about three miles of road on our property. I had never used an excavator before I started...
The bears should stay away more when you guys have your dogs barking on your property.
And....while you are gone from your trailer...please never leave food in the trailer that the bears can pick up the smell from... We had a bear trying to "rip" itself into one of the corners of our trailer years ago. Now, we never see bears close by with dogs barking at everything.
Good luck! Envy you guys having this beautiful property and being so young. A LOT of beautiful nature adventures lies ahead! And...like me...you would love the intense sound of...nothing...just birds and the wind cruising through the tree leaves.

Black bears can be a problem but, in my personal experience they can be as afraid of us as we are of them.
In Yosemite I had just changed into my shorts when a black bear stuck his head into our tent and grabbed my pants. Without thinking I grabbed a broom and ran after the bear yelling for him to drop my pants. I caught up to him and swatted him with my broom while screaming at him. He dropped my pants and ran off. … I might have been just lucky, but that’s my experience with black bears (he might have been a brown bear, it was 50 plus years ago).

@@jt1364 When you are part of a loving family who shares space with you it is not "just a plot of land" even when part of a larger ranch. The space you build and improve on becomes your home even if you do not own it. Spencer and his family including his grandfather are blessed in each other. TY for bringing to light the trust Spencer's grandfather has in him to bring the land he has allowed Spencer to inhabit to a healthy home environment. In Texas many fathers and grandfathers have shared their ranches with their sons and grandsons( or daughters and granddaughters) hoping for happiness and joy in their families. Thus it has been even before Texas was first a nation then a state. Many cultures do this for example the Quakers and the Amish. God bless and keep you. May He bring you joy into your life.

I have so many questions guys! 🤔😬
First I hope the puppers 🐕🐶 will be safe enough out there with the bears, lynx, and wolves. It freaks me out because you probably won't let them sleep in the trailer!😢
Secondly, Spencer, I hope you didn't leave the trailer out there.
When we bought our property here in Muskoka Ontario Canada we learned very quickly that bears will break into ANYTHING and destroy it. We lost a trailer and the interior of our old pickup that we took there while we built. 🤦🏼‍♀️
The camper was not new and we didn't leave food in it but we came back one weekend and the door was ripped off and a window was pushed out. They destroyed both bed mattresses and ripped up the doors to every cabinet. They were hooked close for travel, we should've left them wide open.
They removed the little fridge door as well.
We gutted it and just put two mattresses down for anybody that wanted to stay over to help build. We ended up buying a small shipping container and turning it into a small kitchen, food storage, and tool shed. That was a saving grace several times because the bears couldn't open the metal doors and the scratches proved they tried. We kept it for storage and moved it further back into our property out of the way. We've painted it a few times to keep it from rusting out but it's great little storage safe in the woods.
I'm so glad you brought up AIRBNB pricing because it's too out of hand and moreover the homeowners are allowed to charge and change rules as they see fit. We rented a place in the US last winter that we thought we cost $2300 for the week and it ended up costing us $2800 with all their extra fees! We compared the price of a nice hotel a 30 min drive away from our AIRBNB and for 2 rooms in a very nice hotel, it was $2000 all in, including a hot family-style breakfast every day!!! No more AIRBNB for us!
You guys were smart in buying the trailer! You guys are young and the kids will love camping and traveling with the trailer. My parents had a trailer while I grew up and when we were 12 - 13 we were allowed to have a tent outside our trailer and bring a friend camping. Those trips were so much fun as a kid! We got to see almost every state in the USA and every Province in Canada thanks to those trailers. ❤❤❤❤
We can buy our kids a million dollars in presents 🎁 and they won't remember 99% of them but they will remember 100% of the adventures we take with them! Think back to your childhoods and what you can remember most! 😊😉
