  • Wow, what an awesome metal detecting adventure finding silver nuggets and even a couple sweet silver veins in the solid bedrock. I also discovered some crazy dangerous vertical mine openings. It was kinda scary metal detecting there. It was an amazing hunt with meMiner and our friend Sheldon. Are Canadians timid about driving through the water? Watch what happens when I ask meMiner that...lol.

    For those asking how to get the silver out, they basically grind the whole rock down to a fine powder in a rock grinder. They take the dust and put it in a kiln. The silver sinks to the bottom once it's all melted and the other elements goes to the top. Once its cooled down it all breaks apart and your left with a chunk of almost pure silver.

      Silver from here is worth a bunch if it looks good. Just do a search for "Cobalt, Ontario silver specimens" You will be surprised! It's more to do with the history and whatnot of the area than having silver

    I watched a mining video the yesterday. You can get micro dynamite sticks! You just need a 1/2" masonry drill bit, a cordless impact drill, an igniter and you can blow that crevice stuff out. Great video once again.

      Walleye is an invasive species for us. We actually poison lakes and ponds to get rid of them sometimes.

    Beautiful area! You need a fine chisel or wedge ! Awesome! Never seen raw silver. But one thing I do know about is splitting rock! Be careful out there!

    Those poor miners 100 years ago walked past those silver veins hundreds of times over and you come along with your detector and find em. ;) Pretty awesome!

      True. However, there were veins up to 3' thick and some hundreds of feet long and 60' deep to worry about mining haha That's why there is so much in the waste rock piles as well, it wasnt worth it in comparison

    I find quite a bit of gold near our property in NC.
    small amounts but we did have it assayed (sp?) as being fairly pure.

    Do you think you could put those rocks in a kiln and heat it up to 1800 degrees, that it would melt the silver and extrude it from the rocks? I bet you could extract some. I would go crazy detecting there. My bag would weigh 200lbs when I left lol

      You don't. Not from here, specimens is where it's at due to historical significance. And if you were to, it's more involved than crushing and melting with flux.

      Come on now.. Cobalt silver specimens are valuable. Some are worth a small fortune! But if you're out to collect silver for silver.. yea, go look for something else. It's not worth the effort and you will be wasting potentially awesome specimens in the process.

      Anything is possible in northern Ontario .. A lot happened in the past . geology and mining related . I like to think there's a lot more out there to keep er going . hahaha
      There's alooooooot of rock .
      And alooooot of minerals listed in northern Ontario .
      0% chance people stepped foot in most parts .
      Even prospecting .... One could only do so much with the knowledge they have ... In a vast chunk of land covered in either ice and snow .. Or water mud and Skeeter's .
      Even back when prospecting was done . " here " was during the 60" s ..... Technology and information was hurtin.
      We almost need another boots on the ground run of prospectors around !!
      No lazy helicopter b.s lmao. xD.
      It works .. But it doesn't ,
      Only picks up whatever it's designed for .
