The album has some impressive collabs, but I sure did not see this one coming on so strong. Surfjan is heavenly here, and Matt’s voice carries so much ground in it, so much sorrow, it complements perfectly the light melody, so delicately sung by Stevens.
For me, this is the standout track on an amazing album. I don't think anyone had Sufjan and The National on their bingo card. It has the same feel as 'Sombody Desperate' from a few years back. Gut wrenching!
@@Paul64F it’s a perfect song really. Gets to you from the first listen and won’t leave you mind playing in loop from there on. It’s an instant fav of mine and I have a lot of The National fav songs so entering directly into my personal top 10 of all times does happen often 📯
My heart didn’t know what to do when I saw SUFJAN STEVENS and THE NATIONAL on same track. It felt like my heart was ready to do back flips, fall out of my chest, and explode at the same time.
This song is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life. It's heartbreaking. For some reason it reminded me of the story of Leo and Remi from the beautiful and sensitive movie called "Close"
Don't make this any harder Everybody's waiting Walk-on's almost over Teenagers on ice Try to keep my distance Talking of forgiveness Once upon a poolside Underneath the lights What was the worried thing you said to me? I'll follow you everywhere While you work the room I don't know how you do it Tangerine perfume I'm not doing anyone Any kind of favors Watching airplanes land Sink into the pavement What was the worried thing you said to me? I can't keep talking, I can't stop shaking I can't keep track of everything I'm taking Everything is different, why do I feel the same? Am I asking for too much? Can't hear what you're saying What was the worried thing you said to me? I thought we could make it through anything This is the closest we've ever been And I have no idea what's happening Is this how this whole thing is gonna end? This is the closest we've ever been Don't make this any harder Everybody's waiting Walk-on's almost over Teenagers on ice Try to keep my distance Talking of forgiveness Once upon a poolside Underneath the lights What was the worried thing you said to me? I drove 35 minutes out of my way out this on repeat on Apple Music and let the music take me away. I actually had this playing at a Walmart parking lot, on repeat and opened my phones notes app and wrote the saddest journal entry to date
And there is the hallelujah that is Sufjans gorgeous voice! When he adds his backing vocals on this song, my heart feels like it's sinking AND soaring. LOVE
I’ve lived the National for years. I can listen to their songs over and bet and never get tired of them Matt Berninger has such a deep beautiful voice and I love his quirky moves.
It reminds my childhood struggling how things will gonna be if I grow Older. Now I'm a Mature Woman, I still keep my Head up High and Live to Praise the Lord how He brought me on this earth to keep my Positivity with Love and Passion. It's a Wonderful Life to Live our Positive Mindset Good anytime until there's Air we Breath on earth. Thank You for bringing this Song. God Bless 🙏💞🙏💕🙏💕
Gosh Damn, this album is Phenomenal. Each succulent, single, drop over the last few months has sustained me. Now this plentitude of rapturous verses... This is best album by anyone in a decade. I'm in that delicious "junkie for the hooks" fiending period where I just want to hear every song, everywhere, forever. God Bless the National. So beautiful.
I listened to songs like Fake Empire. Graceless, I should live in salt. Terrible love. I decided to hit “shuffle” on The National and I first heard The Alcott. I got a bit choked up. Then I decided to play this cd from the beginning and I haven’t gotten past this song. What a masterpiece. A beautiful masterpiece and sad. But this - this is incredible.
The line “this is the closest we have ever been” reminds me of this verse from Seamus Heaney: "So while the parish priest at her bedside Went hammer and tongs at the prayers for the dying And some were responding and some crying I remembered her head bent towards my head, Her breath in mine, our fluent dipping knives- Never closer the whole rest of our lives."
"Disconnection kills more people than anything. Remember this before you start selectively listening to a loving or needing one. All they want is what they need. Love takes many forms, the least of which is kind. It may feel like it takes patience but it's actually concern. I can see how you could confuse them." ,dan'
Your child has been blessed with a parent that cares enough to share beautiful music. Keep up the good work. One day when you're older, one of your kids will tell you to check out a new song that is just as beautiful as this one and you will think, "I guess I didn't do too bad after all".
Hey Sossos86. The National dropped another album about a month ago. It's got an older harder sound but there is a song called "Tour Manager" you may want to listen to with your little girl. I hope the two of you love it.
Wow that was beautiful. I’ll be purchasing the album soon, but I’m trying to decide if I’m ready to listen on repeat, as I usually do. Matt’s lyrics have been the soundtrack to my life for a while now, but sometimes the feelings and identification can be overwhelming and heartbreaking.
thank you for these gorgeous sounds. the care in all this tracks is so immense im seriously so grateful you lent your talent in something so beautiful. thank you
thank you very much from me personally for the album. in my opinion this is the best album from The National so far. I've heard almost all of Matt's and friends' works. No one is luckier than us listening to your songs. Once again, thank you
Sounds like Sufjan needs a prayer today! 😀❤️ Acts 4:9-10 “ 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.”
"Bewildered is terrified of a soft pair of eyes and softer lips making light of his heart. Callous isn't often traded for anything but loneliness. It's an acceptance more than an observation, like simple aftermath. This plus this is that. That's how callous feels. Like trading wings for a pillow. You can no longer fly but sleep subdues you long enough for it's haunt to subside. As you tell yourself that it was the right decision to make, time gradually assures that slumber will wake you one day, forgetting ever having flown and the spectre of ascension dissipates like vapor before the gale as your pillow takes your place now whistling in the dark." ,dan'
:'D Am I the only one that's freaked out by the big talking head in all the videos? Listening to this album for the first time! :D How exciting! Really enjoy all your previous work!

"Some people are so hollow you can still hear the past echoing inside of them. A skin deep smile, cadavered and dancing out of spite as in fresh out. Written in black and white on their sleeves are the words "I am ruined, how's that for a shame?" Can they ever heal? How? I won't give up on them. ngl i love this band because of Taylor Swift. and folklorevermore are my most favourite album of her, and listening to The National feels like going home, it fills the part of soul who loves calm, heartbreaking and soft musics that feels like a lullaby to my soul 💌
Does anyone recognise that the piano part of this song was used in a film or tv episode? Sounds so familiar but cannot for the life of me work out where I recognise it from! Any help?

The last album had way more
This is actually part of Sufjan's 50 States Project and the state is "emotional distress." 😢😢😢
and the capital of that state is sorrow.
@@Suryaless and the state flower is the weeping willow.
Wow. Didn’t know any of this.
🤣🤣🤣😘🤷
🤣🤣🤣💀
Nobody writes "Sad dad songs" quite like the National and I love every one of them.
American Football is a worthy opponent in that area.
Dad jokes aside.
That's an insult Brother, you might want to rethink your snarky comment.
That is so rude dude! Just take your comment down. Please.

Saw these on the Glastonbury coverage and was stunned to silence.....what an incredible band...where have I been for the last 15 years
Never too late!
Right? More like 17 I think. I feel I lost out on almost 2 decades of being blessed to hear such amazing artists.
The National’s ability to elicit such intense emotion through storytelling and deep, meaning is gut wrenching sometimes😢❤
Don't make this any harder
Everybody's waiting
Walk-on's almost over
Teenagers on ice
Try to keep my distance
Talking of forgiveness
Once upon a poolside
Underneath the lights
What was the worried thing you said to me?
I'll follow you everywhere
While you work the room

Tangerine perfume
I'm not doing anyone
Any kind of favors
Watching airplanes land
Sink into the pavement
What was the worried thing you said to me?
I can't keep talking, I can't stop shaking
I can't keep track of everything I'm taking
Everything is different, why do I feel the same?
Am I asking for too much? Can't hear what you're saying
What was the worried thing you said to me?
I thought we could make it through anything
This is the closest we've ever been
And I have no idea what's happening
Is this how this whole thing is gonna end?
This is the closest we've ever been
Don't make this any harder

"Is this how this whole thing is gonna end?
This is the closest we have ever been."
These two lines moved me to tears.

Great sound these guys have!! Great to see an album!!
The nacional é uma baita banda , Eles merecem muito reconhecimento e público. O nível de composição deles é absurdo ❤
This song made me cry silently in the corner of my room
I'm sorry you had to be alone. Hoping it made you stronger, but not taking away your sensitivity. It's a rare thing these days, wear it proudly!
How insane when an artist playing a piano is so skilled in the mathematical moment one is shook to tears ❤
That octave shift into the second verse. So simple. So utterly fucking incredible....
My mom was a music teacher and played piano. Oh how I wish she could hear this masterpiece:-(
