Macbeth was the Shakespeare play that Wilson mentioned.. The 3 witches predicted he would be King of Scotland until Birnam Wood came to Dunsinane & the army used the branches as a disguise..... Excellent episode, really enjoyed it, thank you & YES they did win, definitely. The Verger said "you don't get to be a verger with a funny face" & Jones said "you did alright"! Snacks: Cottage Pie (it's lunchtime here)

Another great time was had by all! Old Frazer's ghost stories get more and more spooky as things move on. Almost the full cast was in this one - except Mrs Pike. 🥴❤👍

Dad's Army was hugely popular back in the day, but I suspect it has fallen out of context. When it was made, most people had a family member who had served in the Home Guard, the comedic tone of the show was therefore watched in the context of knowing that the Home Guard were a serious and very dedicated fighting force.
There are a number of shows that came in the wake of WW2 that were made for an audience who knew the reality. In the US "Hogans Heroes" was hugely popular, a comedy show set in a German prisoner of war camp. These were all watched by people who had a fairly good knowledge of how serious things were.
Seen now, I wonder if young audiences overlook the competence and dedication of these people that these people had. More modern shows like "MASH" showed a comedic side to war, but always included some of the horror. In the wake of WW2 when everyone was very aware, that aspect was left out intentionally.
The Home Guard was made up of people in reserve occupations and those with "disabilities" there were quite a few people in those days who had suffered diseases like polio, or injuries that meant they were unable to march huge distances under extreme conditions. It didn't make them any less capable of putting up a good fight. The Home Guard were a long way from being doddery old men.
