How to Create an Alice in Wonderland inspired Piece of Furniture Art

- This was a fun project. Commissions are something Lel is asked to do from time to time and we have a customer who buys a lot of furniture and it is normally the shall we say interesting pieces. This particular customer has asked for several pieces like this so we thought we would film this one to show you how Lel thinks and how she constructs a look like this.
Oh, I totally think Martin should do a piece and you film it lol. I really cannot express enough how much I enjoy the two of you. The fact that you both put so much into each piece that you do and you both have unique skills that contribute so much to your projects. Also Lel I absolutely love how you do a Project from the bottom of the legs to the very top of the piece and everything in between front sides. So many Times people just do a neutral white wash or stain top and some kind of legs that they think work with the peace. No don’t get me wrong. There’s a market for that, a big one and that’s what a lot of people are looking for and it looks lovely. But if we’re talking about an artistic version of flipping a piece of furniture and doing furniture art, I love how the whole piece every single inch and centimeter is a part of the piece of art. I hope I’m making sense. Now I have many children and most of them are really into the neutral colors neutral designs, neutral, neutral, neutral. Not their mama😉. I am like, why do whatever someone else does when you can do something unique and personal, why do white when you can do colors and designs? But that’s my taste. I don’t expect or want everyone else to be the same. I think that’s the whole point is I like that I can be individual and create a one-of-a-kind item and one-of-a-kind home. And I love what you do and I know I’m not the only one obviously so we have a big planet and we can all love different things everything from beige to psychedelic.😍👍🏼

You sound very similar to me I do understand completely what you mean. There are furniture painters and furniture artists I'm the latter.
I have carved a bright bohemian niche for my furniture with customers who return because they know what they are getting a piece that no one ever will have and your right I think unique is special..... I have on occasions painted white many years ago and couldn't sell it I think people don't expect me to follow the norms ha ha you see me I'm a little bit of a rule breaker.
Marty is starting his piece tomorrow and I'm filming it we think it will be very funny he has never ever painted a piece of furniture so we could get anything ha ha ha.

I have to say that I agree with you wholeheartedly. I'm so impressed with Lei's work because it is truly art. Instead of two-dimensional art hung on a wall, her pieces command the space in a room. And of course, COLOR moves me. The neutral furniture painters are so numerous that I'm bored before they even begin. Great comment!
Oh my goodness, it did arrive!!! I was so sad to think that it got lost in the mail since it took forever to reach you. So happy you enjoyed it. Sadly, I've been absent from your last few videos. The holidays kept me so busy at work and at home, I just didn't have the time or even the energy to keep up with anything else. How wonderful to see your take on this Alice in Wonderland piece. Absolutely delightful. I've also been working on a toy chest with Alice and her characters. I'll try to post a photo when it's finally done. Via the magic of your edited videos, you are able to magically complete your pieces so damn fast. It takes me forever... Happy-Happy to finally be back on track with you.

Wonderful, whimsical piece. I love Alice and Wonderland theme. I did a side table in that theme. I think it is beautiful and fun.

I’ve studied many furniture painters and artists, and turned a few thrift store items I love and use, and you’re the most inspiring and creative! I’m never bored watching you, though sometimes I don’t understand a Scottish accented word here and there. I love how you use so many techniques and teach them as you go. You’ve inspired me to take on a little yard sale 2-drawer file cabinet. I have the image and transfer picked out, today will match the paint. Last night I remembered a little jar of seashells I bought years ago; they might go on! One of the more creative and fun pieces I’ve done was a mirror. Painted the frame then decoupaged around the sides with napkins. Added antique glass bugle beads around the mirror, and some glass 1/2 marbles with images underneath around the frame. So fun!
Please tell Martin what a stellar job he does! From repair, hardware, filming, and of course his sense of humor. You two are a joy!
Marty has read your message, and he does do a great job and if I'm honest there wouldn't be a business without him. Although his sense of humour often I could do without it ...ha ha 🤣

I would have all my furniture decorated with Alice, but hubby wouldn’t allow it lol, so I decorated my body with Alice tattoos, she is my all time favourite

Yes it's a simple piece easy to blend and nothing tricky my client who buys lots from me was very happy.
Marty is starting his piece tomorrow I will be filming he's never painted a piece before on the odd occasion he has undercoated a piece but never created a piece to sell. He is creative in his own way with wood so I'm thinking he's seen so many things I've done he's probably going to do a good job but you can all decide ha ha

I think it will be fun to watch Marty paint, even if it is just this once and to see what he creates.
I used to watch my grandmother cook and bake and learned from her, just from watching.
I know that Marty has learned a lot from watching you over the years, but now, he will get to bring his own style into this project. It will be loads of fun for everyone.
I, myself, have been busy decoupaging my 5 lampshades with Christmas napkins (My regular decor lampshades were too floral, so i bought in a garage sale "blank" lampshades and some napkins and off I went). None are perfect, but they sure add to the Christmas atmosphere. Otherwise, have been busy with other lovely Christmas decor projects.
My perspective has changed quite a bit, since I started watching your videos and I am more fearless than ever before. I thank you, Lel and Marty, for it. You have made a huge difference in my life.
Additionally, seeing you be upbeat, creative and having fun with all of your health issues has helped me too because I have a few things popping up, all at once, which were discouraging. But, then I remembered how you live every day with your health conditions and I took courage from that. Thank you for being a shining example for all of us.
I finished painting and decoupaging 3 Christmas photo frames. I may post them in instagram at some point. It's all fun.
Back to my regular job of taking care of my mother in law on Tuesday.

I love this and the plaid along the edges really adds some 'wow!' I love anything Alice in Wonderland - oh, and the stripes on the legs! So, not sure if you've heard of these folks (Kacha and Reclaimed Heirloom). They did a cute competition where their husbands did the design and work on the furniture while the ladies did the camera work. It was funny and fun. Each husband did a really great job, too. So cute. 😁I think you should switch with Martyn!!!

I positively LOVE your Alice cabinet!! I’d like to know if I’m totally bonkers, or did you not cut the paper where the door opens?? No need to take a knife and slice above & below the hinges so the door opens more freely and avoid possible tearing of the paper? 😮❤
Of course I cut it ha ha although maybe not on camera.... Although have you ever committed that awful crime of forgetting .... I have then the repairs take ages. This was sold a long long time ago but in January this year I did another piece if you love whimsical x

I have a inkjet, near the end I think you said spray them first or they’ll run everywhere? Spray the paper with what? What sort of paper should I use? This turned out incredible!! 😍😍
Apply your printed paper any paper for your printer.... Then just spray seal over the paper lightly then top coat as usual.... Its just to stop the ink smearing when you brush your top coat over it.... Hope this helps x

Lel, what size ptrinter do you use? You are able to make some nice size prints that look larger on camera anyway, than 8 1/2 x 11. Are they legal size prints or larger? I am loving what you are doing here! I was just about to ask if you were using a laser printer, and lo and behold, you started talking about laser vs ink jet!!! I couldn't believe the timing. I had to backspace off my question!!! This piece and you are absolutely magical. The piece is quirky and cute as can be!
Hi Cathy, it's Martyn. Our printers are industrial lasers so not something available in your average tech shop. They took us a long time to find and dial in to be able to start. Sorry I can't help more

We have our paper especially made for our decoupage paper in Holland and it's shipped to the UK.... Its especially made so kind of difficult to describe.

I’m not in the UK. Did you sand the whole thing before you started? What did you use to fix the decoupage sheets on?
No I didn't sand anything our own Made by Marley Paper is best applied to a smooth surface and I use no prep paints all made by marley paper is applied with mod podge.... Hope this helps.

I just ordered the 12 pack of Aiw paper. Will I need to spray it also ? Can you give me a list of the colors that you use the blues in the whites creams and blacks? I think it’s and Sloan’s pants but can I get the actual color please?
This was such an old video and I didn't have the pack for sale then.
I only released it last year.
For the up to date colours used I would watch this video I filmed with the set this January. I go through all the colours in this video.

I have specific websites sites that I pay for enabling me to use images free.
However the Google free source images or free images try the national library or if a person has Been dead for over 70 years you can use images.
I got the Alice images from raw pixel.

You could also try graffics fairy although try different spellings for this as it might me graffix.

It's decoupage paper but yes we do have stockists in the states however the Alice set of papers is a custom set and is 12 sheets as are usual sets are 3 sheets.
