i made one o you swan float quills and caught a few perch the other day. also a good alternative for split shot is surgical tubing with BB's inside only disadvantage is you have to slide the tubing on before the hook
Hi Graeme I make my own feeders, well worth it if you do a lot of river fishing, as this can add up in pounds not pence when losing feeders and we all lose feeders on snaggy fast rivers. The coil method type inline are easy to make just get some stiff rig tubing and even some felt tip pen inserts for running feeders' melt them at each end with a lighter to keep them inside the coil, you will get the idea! just go your local motorcycle scrap dealers and that's where you find all the different sizes in spring coils, you will even see these in tackle shops from between £1.50-£2.00 So cheap when your sourcing them yourself and altering them, I have them all shapes and sizes running fixed and inline fish safety feeders, I would guess I've saved hundreds over the years just making them and not buying them. Hope this helps guys and gives you a rough idea, I'm not saying it's the best way, but just a cheap way' and it works, give it a go at your local scrapyard, TOTALLY TOTAL AWESOMENESS Keep it up Graeme, great all round show to suit all ages👍🏼🎣🐟
Some lovely barbel there, when I see videos like this, I can’t wait to go fishing. I made a few items of tackle as a lad in school, in metal work class. I remember one item in particular that I was very proud of at the time, until it came to using it, I made a landing net head out of steel, then realised I could hardly lift it so it was practically useless.😁
I make my own for the Wye too, but I use cheapo plastic hair rollers for the body. Add lead strip, link and swivel, job done. I weigh them after they are made and write the weight on the lead strip, helps when you are digging for a slightly heavier/lighter one. My mates laugh at my lovely purple and pink feeders, but they cost about 10 pence each and it doesn't hurt so much when the Wye tackle fairy robs you of a dozen in a morning.
Tim, think about it. When Graeme loses one, it is not plastic. The iron will rust away. The ones I last made actually use a steel split pen (cotter pin) for weight.
I don't know why but I got really excited by this video, your creativity is great and I love all of your great and wacky videos. Keep up the great work and tight lines ☺
Great video Graeme., I've made feeders out of PVC piping and they're great to use. I too like making my own stuff for fishing . I use electrical cable piping for sleeves for boom making too.
We used to conceive and make our own tackle back in the 60s, even 70s because the range of gear we see nowadays was either not available, or unaffordable. It was so much more enjoyable too. Appreciate all of yours and Mike's videos. Best wishes. D.
Such a good idea - I had an idea though mate... if you left 3 or 4 more squares before your initial cut [more overhang] you could then use taht to hold the lead in place and then just double lock the 2 edges together with a fold over to hold it in place? I would love your thoughts on this!
Top tip Graham 👍...I think a man of your skill set should also have a go at making up an Avon rod and doing a video on how to do it. Well done on the fish, the Wye looks superb.
Oh I forgot about the cage feeders, I've used chicken wire but it doesn't last long Graeme,I use mig welding wire, up to you what diameter, but you need a soldering gun with solder, power gum, some dead cow weights, barrel swivel, basically just make a small square 25mm 25mm by 45mm long. Your first one will take about 25 mins, after a few your rocking mate. 15 mins per feeder, well worth it for the self gratification of catching fish on tackle you have made from scratch, and cost you penny's in the process, happy days. Good luck Graeme🎣
I make mesh feeders from plastic curlers. You get about 20 in a pack, different sizes from the pound shop. The pink ones look nice and girlie but the colour seems to attract the fish in Coffee colour water.
Hi graeme that stretch is a top area and has accounted for some big weights over the years. You made your feeders exactly the same was as I do and boy don't they work well lol. Top angling and blog as usual. If you fancy doing a winter pike video I know just the place for you ;)
I use plastic woman's curlers, the come in all sizes and all I do is wind some lead wire to the required weight and wire in a premodern wire trace to which, like you I attach my hook above the feeder. All in all I priced them up at 35p
Hats off to you!! I love the concept of putting your own touch on a fishing trip. The build up and anticipation of will it pay off and will it work. Some klonkers as the reward. Love the video and the way its put together. How old was you Graeme when you first went fishing??
Not really freshwater fisherman, but here in Spain beach fishing is not so good, so tend to goto a local lake for carp using homemade open end feeders using a hair curler, strip of lead and a rubber O-ring tucked under the lead, they work fine and cost nothing when her in doors is watching
That's really good! Is it possible for the heavy line to slip out of the lead that you folded over? I've only just got into fishing going for the third time next weekend
@TAFishing Oh OK. Thank you. Don't method feeders spook fish because they have a very short hooklength? Or am I missing something? I only ask this because I used a cage feeder yesterday using a very short hooklength and it seemed to work for me.
Method feeders I would say are more for commercial waters with lots of fish stocked all competing for food. In a river like the Wye the flow is so strong the line goes round in a bow to the method feeder so could also spook the Barbel. I was told to use a long trace on the Wye as that's what the matchmen use,and it catches. Of course if they were all pounding Barbel with a method feeder I would be doing the same. I don't live up the Wye its almost a 3 hour drive for me,so if the tackle shop gives me a suggested tactic I use it. Only when it doesn't work will I start experimenting. Plus of course the rocks and boulders in the River Wye would eat expensive method feeders for breakfast.
I've made antique style bait droppers, ledgers and floats Graeme. See also "The Handmade Fisherman " on you tube he's excellent. Very well shot video, the head cam stuff gets a bit un watchable after two beers !!
u asked what do i think ??? maybe 11 lbs ??? naaa definitely not maybe maybe.. 7..8 lbs definitely not over 10 no way.. don't even talk about weight Gram unless ur gonna weight it.... just bring a scale n weigh the darn thing n then mention weight.. LOLOL. can ya tell im jealous...great job Gram..thank u bud. thumbs up...
Who else makes their own fishing tackle?
TAFishing Graeme they're called coil feeders and you're supposed to put your hook bait in the groundbait that is on the feeder like a method feeder
just started making lures and and spinners.
actually, i know of at least a dozen youtube channels that make craftsmanship quality tackle :). Half of them are from UK. You better not go there :)
i made one o you swan float quills and caught a few perch the other day.

Inspiring, creative, innovative. At 54 years old, I've never enjoyed fishing so much since watching TAF. Graham is just the Man!
This is TA fishing all over! Absolutely love it.
And getting the last word in with the canoeist!
Hi Graeme, I've read lots of your books since I was a young man. Thank you for the videos. you are an inspiration and a legend. Kind regards Jon.
We used to make swim feeders out of my mothers hair curlers.worked brilliantly.
You really do inspire people Graeme!! Well done.🎣😎

Nothing better than catching a fish on something you've made your self

THIS THE BEST FISHING CHANNEL BY FAR !
Totally awesome. Getting back to angling because of TAF. Love it. THANK YOU!

Only just discovered this film. I will be making my own feeders. Thank you for tips.
Brilliant stuff Graham really enjoy watching your videos
Awesome homemade feeders. I will certainly be trying this myself soon. Thanks for the uploads. :)
As always, great fishing in a beautifully place.

Nice one graham, never tried making my own but seems simple enough 👍
Top tip Graham 👍...I think a man of your skill set should also have a go at making up an Avon rod and doing a video on how to do it. Well done on the fish, the Wye looks superb.

Another awesome video. I’m going to make some of them. I watch all your videos and love them.
Always enjoy your videos! Nice feeders; nice fish!
Half the fun of any hobby is making the things needed.
Once again great video, Graeme I recon you could catch fish with a length of line a hook and a branch, Top Bloke!
I remember when you used hair curlers. See I am a old school fan
called them tank feeders haha
Hi graeme that stretch is a top area and has accounted for some big weights over the years. You made your feeders exactly the same was as I do and boy don't they work well lol. Top angling and blog as usual. If you fancy doing a winter pike video I know just the place for you ;)

Bruce Forsyth LIVES ON!
congratulations on you new Feeder
another good video Graham love watching you mate keep up the good work..i am going to Fendick`s fishery in Norfolk for some good catfish and carp
nice one Graeme, such a lovely river the wye, as a few have mentioned if i'm going somewhere snaggy it's time for the hair curlers👍
In the U.S. the mesh lists as "hardware cloth". and the fastener can be found under the term "hourglass swage".
Off to the shed to make some right now.
Nice rig and fish keep it up
excellent vid making something and it working and I'm also hopeing to fish the river Wye soon great 🎣🎣🎣✌
Great Video Graeme soon we will be seeing you in Cannes getting a Oscars for your videos. When can we buy them feeders of you.
Beautiful video!

Age of 8.Shore fishing out of Teignmouth.Devon.
Try a method feeder " wire round lead " under a slider float works great 👍
Awesome video u guys make I'm hopein to catch some carp on mince meat on a feeder hopefully it will work
And Sprats are the best Pike bait if you know how to use them . Whiting are good too !
*Gonna use these to catch a freezeer full of catfish!*
Not really freshwater fisherman, but here in Spain beach fishing is not so good, so tend to goto a local lake for carp using homemade open end feeders using a hair curler, strip of lead and a rubber O-ring tucked under the lead, they work fine and cost nothing when her in doors is watching
One word:....... Awesome......
Good stuff.
Please can we have some beach fishing soon Graeme
Really enjoyed the video.
Am puzzled I thought we were not allowed to use lead in course fishing in the UK.
Only in small shots and small weights . In sea fishing you can use what you want, right up to 1 or 2lb lumps.
Thank you for clearing that up
i make my own pole rigs and floats but yeah, ive made my own net once too! but the fish cant go over 4lb in it because it broke when it had a 5lb fish
nice :).. can you make a homemade method feeder lead and show results please
HI ! tafishing ...do you mind me asking what type cameras do you use , great sound and quality
I make my own Pike floats ! Out of broom sticks !
I miss barbel, I wish they'd put some in the Shannon, it could be Europes best barbel river I reckon!
If it was that good of a river for barbel I’m sure there would already be some in there
@@richardevans8908 there are no native barbel in ireland, so apologise for being a smart ass
I was born in Hereford great vid btw 🐡
Hi graeme - The Rod you caught the first fish on, is that a John Wilson Heavy Feeder Rod?
i like your vidoes alot but is lead flashing safe cause i know some lead is bad for fish
I make a lot of my own tackle, lures, and flies. But being a Yank, feeders are not something we do. Maybe I can change that.....
That's really good! Is it possible for the heavy line to slip out of the lead that you folded over? I've only just got into fishing going for the third time next weekend
I have never had it happen as the folded angle is so acute.
It's not about the tactics it's about the hook bait and the loose feed
Nice job Graeme,
Catch on your own homemade gear, satisfaction guaranteed.
Steve in Fife.
If I ever need tips 9 out 10 times I choose ta wish you could come to newark on trent and fish our (bobs) island.
Go cod fishing I live in Labrador which is close to where you live
Does that include end rigs?
made similar swim feeders using plastic ladies hair curlers. work well .
I use tire balancing weights!
good video
U guys are awesome keep up the videos
Just a question: Why not use a much shorter hook length so that the bait is much closer to the feeder?
I was told the fish are spooked by the feeder so that's why they advise using a longer hooklength.
@TAFishing Oh OK. Thank you. Don't method feeders spook fish because they have a very short hooklength? Or am I missing something? I only ask this because I used a cage feeder yesterday using a very short hooklength and it seemed to work for me.

I've made antique style bait droppers, ledgers and floats Graeme. See also "The Handmade Fisherman " on you tube he's excellent. Very well shot video, the head cam stuff gets a bit un watchable after two beers !!
Clonking Barbel mate.
I've made method feeder floats
uncle Graeme why don't you close off the bottom ends?
There's nathink quite like making your own thing's for the lake's or the beach and putting them to the test, I take my hate of to you alway's
Why are people pressing thumbs down? Please go and take your tablets.
Thanks.
Are you saying Aver or Maver for your rod?
Avon.
TA Outdoors Thank you. I have been trying to figure out which rod it was so I can try to find one.
Pen rod fishing please
Just curious why alot of british anglers use such long fishing rods ? whats the benefit ?
Dakota Outdoors compensating for something :)
Dakota Outdoors further casting distance, softer action, more feel for playing a fish, better accuracy on the whole
Why is he back reeling when he fought the last barbel?
Backwinding can be standard method if you want to maintain pressure on a fish.I use both.
Oops, lead free lead?!
free as in it cost me nothing.
