Fished all of my life using J style hooks but since most all of the guides are using the circle hooks there has got to be something to it. I have bought some circle hooks to try, they weren’t octopus hooks but I will give them a try. At 67 I’m still learning new things. Thanks for taking the time to share this information. I have learned a lot from watching your channel, keep up the good work young man.
i used to fish with my Dad all the time and we would use J hooks. I've been getting back into fishing and tried circle and octopus hooks and I feel they greatly increase my hookup rate.
One of the pay lakes I fish at will not let you use circle hooks and can’t figure out why, I don’t have any issues with an octopus hook just don’t understand why they won’t let you use them.
Interesting how 40 years ago the J-hooks that we tied many of our fly patterns with were simply referred to as a turned up eye hook. I am interested in knowing when the name was changed to an 'octopus hook' and where that name originated. Anyone know?
I was always told that the only difference between a circle hook and an octopus hook was the bent eye but they're basically the same thing just with that one difference. Also it makes it kind of confusing because they typically don't refer to J Hooks or any other hook other than a circle hook as an octopus hook. Because when you look up J Hooks with a bent eye they just refer to them as down eyed J hooks. but at this point I'm just getting more confused because this video is basically contradicting everything I was told about the difference between hooks.
the biggest aggravation with buying hooks is there is no set standard sizes for hooks. Hooks labeled as one size can be different from different manufacturers. You have to buy in person to know exactly what size hook you are actually getting
I like them needed point hooks when I use creek chubs for bait
Great information Dieter. I did not know that. 👍
THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME AND EFFORT ALWAYS GREAT CONTENT
Appreciate the great info as always
So very true, hooks nowadays can drive you nuts trying to pick one out if your just a part timer fisherman.
A fella could go cross-eyed in the BPS hook section..
Thanks for a simple explanation concerning one of the differences.. d:^)
Thank you... Been fishing since 1962 and didn't know.

If I want to set the hook hard I use j hooks and octopus hooks, if I'm lazy that day I use circle and octopus circle hooks.
Good video, cheers!
Awesome bro 👍
Thanks boss!
Great content Dieter, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I ran across a outside barb circle hook what is its purpose??
They say it has better retention….i got a pack.
Just bought my first pack of Gamakatsu octopus hooks I’m gonna go carp fishing right now see how these hooks do
Gamakatsu hooks are great hooks…..
What freshwater fish can I catch with an octopus 8/0 hook?
Just picked up a few of those bad boys
Catfish, striped bass, sturgeon…..

Pay lakes could care less about care of the fish. They see trophy fish as a disposable commodity.
@@DieterMelhorn I don’t disagree with you, but if the rivers are to high to fish pay lake it is.
soi hooks is the best
Never heard of them…
Maybe it’s me lol but I’m still confused as to when do you use just a standard octopus ( not circle) hook like the one in the video?
I typically use circle octopus hooks but never just regular octopus hooks.
Do you set the hook with Octopus hooks?

I’ve not found the origin…
All I use is the 8/0 and 9/0 hooks

Good morning
How are you!!!
@DieterMelhorn good how are you? I went out yesterday didn't do any good it's still cold here the wind was horrible better luck next time 🤞🤞
A circle hook is all about the point and has nothing to do with the eye.
👍👍👍👍👍🎣
