My interpretation of that last moment, when Donny looks up at the bartender, is him finally realizing that it was not his fault. He did not bring this on himself just by giving Martha a cup of tea on the house. I love this show, but it is extremely uncomfortable and I did not always like Donny. But, the reality is that victims are not perfect because nobody is. He didn't deserve what happened to him, and he didn't bring it on himself, no matter how imperfect he is.
i think its a good thing you didn't always like Donny, because considering a lot of his worst choices were those obviously affected by his traumas, he himself even wrote them into the show. he clearly understood his own mistakes and flaws and it shows a lot of maturity to depict that.
my interpretation was that in that moment he fully empathized with Martha, he finally realized how she had always felt about him and why, and felt that same initial attachment she did, being at that same low place, seeing exactly where she came from. not necessarily heading down the same path as Martha, but understanding her entirely. idk if that makes sense
I think you had the complete opposite interpretation than the one he intended. Just by reading and listening to his interviews following this show you will see him saying that what he wrote was in part to show that it’s not all black and white innocent victim vs evil aggressor. That in the end, Martha wasn’t evil, she was mentally ill but she was still an agressor that needed to be dealt with. And him, well, he was in the perfect headspace to invite this kind of person and behavior into his life, which makes it not his fault but it inadvertently paints a picture where it presents him with having responsibility for it.
I like how brutally honest this episode was about how healing isn’t linear. Martha getting locked up didn’t mean she was suddenly out of his life, she’d been stalking him for 2 years after all. And telling the world about his assault didn’t mean that trauma magically disappeared. I like to think that ending was Donny finally understanding Martha, and I hope that gave him closure for that chapter of his life.
the end scene confused me but i realized that the point of it was to show donny that it wasn't his fault. that him showing kindness didn't give martha a free pass to stalk him because when the same kindness was shown to him, he had no desire to stalk that man.
I hate that Donny was basically forced into telling his parents the truth, but that understanding and support from both his parents was probably the most wholesome moment of the show for me
He was writing the show. The close-up of the papers on the wall shows a line from episode 4, about Darrien. So, he’s not just obsessing about Martha. And when he goes back to Darrien’s, he went to confront him, but he lost his nerve. In the script, he had Donnie going to Darrien’s flat with a big kitchen knife in his jacket pocket. Just in case you thought that scene meant he would actually go on to work with his abuser again. As for the last scene, I think that was Donny realizing he wasn’t responsible for what Martha put him through.
I think seeing Darien again was closure.... he needed to face him again one more time, just to understand that Darien no longer has power over him. I don't think he ever went to work with him or even saw him again after that. He was obviously having some trauma being in the same room with him again - we see it when he leaves the apt and can barely breathe. But it was closure... that knowing, that Darien will not be able to hurt him anymore.
I just wanted to say, you guys are so amazing! I’ve been following you since Euphoria and you are by FAR the best reaction channel out there right now; I look forward to your videos everyday. Thank you so much for being so consistent and authentic ❤❤
I don't think that's what we're supposed to be getting from that last scene. Donny wasn't going to become another Martha. Rather he was recognizing he wasn't to blame for how Martha reacted to his act of kindness when they met. 15:35
The parent scene had me tearing up too, props to the actors n writers of that scene because that was one of the most realistic conversations I’ve ever seen on TV.
This show means so much to people who are in hiding of the same or similar trauma that Donny/Richard has gone through. You guys are very understanding while also speaking your own mind. I've been watching this channel for 2 years and you guys never miss! Keep up the great and sincere work ❤
A lot of victims find comfort in their abusers that’s probably why Donny went back to Darien because we try to make up this story in our mind where the reason on why they did it is because they were lonely or hurt too. It wasn’t the smartest or best choice but sometimes you need answers
I feel like he didn't end up going to work for Darien... I think he went there just for some closure. He said yes to Darien's offer in the moment, but I can't imagine him following through with it.... the way he nearly collapsed outside after leaving his apartment suggests that it was traumatic to be in the same room with him again. But he needed that closure, to face your abuser again and realize they no longer have that power over you anymore.
@@PowerDiva yeah that’s what I think too. There’s definitely some moments in the show that are different than irl. Like I think Martha (Fiona Harvey) stalked him for four or six years actually
@@voyance4elle yea everyone focuses on him showing up and talking to Darien but really it's that moment that he collapses outside after leaving... that's really the key to that whole scene. It shows that he faced his trauma, on his own terms.

Sending hugs! your little faces broke my heart! As soon as I saw Rob tear up I immediately started crying along❤💔
I loved how you were so understanding and sensible to his situation, it takes some ppl a lot maturity and you guys really showed how mature you are, amazing, for real 👏
Yes. Love him! And Keeley & her mum. Quietly there making sure Donnie's not on his own; showing support. They don't seem to get enough love from viewers.
Although I also wanted a more "satisfying" ending, I think the ending just shows him that he recognizes the way people act the way they do because of the cycle of abuse/trauma. Him recognizing it so clearly, to me says that he's on a path of healing and unlikely to pass it onto someone else.
how i saw the ending is that he was trying to make sense of everything that had happened. And in the last scene was him realizing that it wasn’t his fault, him offering a drink to someone distraught wasn’t what lead to everything, he was acting out of kindness. she was the one fucked in the head (as all stalkers are)
Thank you for completing the series. I cried a lot of times during the show, Donny confronting his parents, him listening to the last voicemail also made me cry, he was really successful in showcasing Martha in the show as equally human but the real one, I don't think so can be sympathised with
Hi from Scotland guys. I could not watch past the second episode because I live alone and it was just too disturbing. I then saw that you were reacting to it, so I got to the end with you both. I thank you both for that. You are really good people with great empathy and insight. Do not ever lose those qualities.
The interview the real Martha did with Piers Morgan is honestly insane he painted her in a better, more likable and sympathetic light on the show than she even is in real life.
I think the point is that it’s not fully satisfying. You can’t put a healing journey in a 3-act structured character arc. Healing can take a life time.
I think to understand Donny's actions you have to try and understand how much his past trauma affected his life and daily decisions. He probably felt so much guilt, anger, isolation, and loneliness on repeat. It makes you think about whether his prior trauma led to him tolerating Martha and made it easier for her to target someone like him.
Hmm, as someone who was sexually abused, I think you're statement is actually pretty uneducated and sweeping..."A victim will always be a victim"? That's just not true.
@@sadisticwinter8354I don’t think that’s what they meant I believe they were trying to say that no matter how imperfect a victim is it doesn’t take away from the fact that the bad thing has happened to them (they should still be treated as such no matter their imperfections)
@@sadisticwinter8354 I didn't mean that AT ALL, I meant that a victim will never do anything that will equate them to their abuser or justify what happened to them. Many people like to blame victims for doing things that they think do not fit with their idea of a "victim's behavior", but trauma works differently for each person and there is no "perfect" way to react to abuse, which is why many people cannot understand why Donny go back to his abuser and end up blaming him, but nothing he does will erase the fact that he was never at fault and that he is a victim!
I don’t really know what to make of the show I can’t say I enjoyed the show really I think it’s really brave of Richard gadd to tell his story like that a unique watch for sure
I wish they explained the fawning response to Darrien better. Like he may have gone to tell him off but once there, the abuser abuse dichotomy emerges again because he is conditioned. From what I understand, people often become overly agreeable and lack boundaries even if their internal monologue knows it is wrong. It is just a trauma response.
Have you ever seen the movie Spotlight? It's about how journalists exposed what happened with the Catholic Church. The whole thing is disturbing and sad but the gut punch for me was the credits. The church not only did nothing to help those who came forward but also moved them elsewhere allowing them to continue the abuse.
