  • Memorial service at the Lisbon Maru memorial, at the National Memorial Arboretum on 2 October 2023. The Lisbon Maru is a tragedy that should never be forgotten.
On 2 October 1942, the Japanese transport ship Lisbon Maru, sunk in Chinese waters with the loss of 828 British POWs. The POWs were kept in appalling conditions on the ship. During the sinking, as the unarmed British men tried to escape and swim to safety, the Japanese soldiers shot them in the water.
Local Chinese fishermen rescued and cared for 384 of the British POWs. Unfortunately, Japanese soldiers later re-captured these POWs.
Today in China, the tragedy and war crime is remembered with a memorial, museum, and various documentaries, whilst in Britain the great loss of life has been largely forgotten.

Thank you Shaun for allowing us in Australia to be part of the service and remembering my father and all our men on the Lisbon Maru. The Memorial is beautiful and appropriate. Thanks to Steve and Rachel Denton, I was able to visit the Memorial in September and the experience was most profound. Absolutely heartbreaking that it has taken so long for our men to be acknowledged that no survivors are still living. Lest We Forget.

Thank you for the kind comment, it means alot that I am able to share the service video with anyone that could not attend during the service. By sharing this video online, more people may become aware of what happened during this tragic event and that history can be remembered.
