Yamaha's quality control at this price point is unbeatable. Very affordable, pro sounding and looking drums, with road worthy ruggedness, beefy tonal power, with an almost natural EQ. Same shell lineage as Recording Custom, so you can't go wrong. These drums are the Hondas of the drum world. Built to last, affordable, look nice, and can be used for anything.
I'd say Mazda! By 04 with the Mazda 3 Honda wasn't as good and I've had 5 integra's and 2 Honda's. Then again, we could just say the Mapex Armory Suite is the Mazda since they are as good or better but no one knows that until they played both, just like you'd have to own a Mazda and a Honda to know you get so much more for your money with the Mazda. Mapex is unbelievable for the money and although I love the stage customs the Armory I would maybe go with.
Although this may be an older video, It is extraordinary in the context of the awesome groove playing by Rob AND the Yamaha Stage Customs, which are both in a class of their own!

@@scottlowell493 Love TAMA Drums, I have a B/B Starclassic kit and it's been the best kit I've ever played/owned.. Got it on clearance too for a little over $1,000, which is a steal!!! I've been listening to your grooves here in this clip. Checking out Stage Custom too, but what's so great about your playing is the dynamics you bring to the kit. You make a good set sound great. Bring it!
Hola and greetings Mr. Rob Brown. I LOVE every single one of your video masterpieces. You're a sensational player and educator. I cant really say which of the 3 instruments is my primary one because with all the gigs I do, theres no telling how I'll be needed by whoever requires my services. Anyways, the purpose of this comment is to emphasize how much I respect your artist craftsmanship. I recently bought a Yamaha stage custom. You cant beat this package for the Buck. Easy to tune. Which reminds me, my drum tuning is a Breeze and a half thanks to your video that focus on tuning. I do a lot of gigs in clubs where theres little to no time to set up. I get away with using your tuning method on each tom in a random corner before I make my way to setting up the kit on stage. By the time I'm set up and drums are miced and the sound guy dials me in, my kit sounds together and solid. I've already done about a dozen gigs with this kit and sound guys like this kit and are blown away when I tell them how much they are. I get told this kit sounds better than more expensive kits beyond the thousands. However my dream kit which I plan on getting this summer is the Yamaha PHX. In conclusion, I salute and bow to you. I hope I will have the privilege of meeting you in person one day. Much respect and admiration to you. You bring fresh inspiration and great energy.
I just bought a set of '98 stage customs for $100 that needed an overhaul with a wire brush and some brasso. They cleaned up great. I put evans onyx on top and coated G1's on the bottom. The tone of these drums is phenomenal; after I played them I am having a hard time justifying owning my Master's birch set 🙂. With the ease of buying extra toms/bass drums in the same finish and the build quality of the stage custom series, Yamaha SC is the best deal out there and it's not even close! I've owned all kinds of other makes/models and I can't see any reason not to use these for ANY application!
Everything that rob said is right. Just because these kits are $650 which are very affordable they didn't "skimp" on quality and sound. I personally have this kit in Raven Black w/ Remo Ebony emperors on the toms and they sound dope. They have a lot of attack. I got to mic them on a gig and people were blown away.
I just picked up a Stage Custom Birch, (2015 model I think) it has the 10 lug snare, for 250 dollars. It hasn't been hardly used. I feel like I struck gold, I had watched this video before ever stumbling upon the kit, and I told myself if I ever got a chance to pick this kit up for 650 retail I would. Happen to be at a garage sale the other day and there was sitting this perfect honey amber Stage custom with 250 on the tag. So thank you sir, for all your videos and being that little voice in the back of my head on that day of "omg buy this now." haha. Kudos sir!
+Lucas O'Dougherty You did strike Gold! It's amazing how well this kit sounds when you upgrade a few things (noticed he has wood hoops on this one). Cause I have the 2009 Model. I upgraded the snare with the 8 lug 2.3mm hoops and Puresound Blaster Snare wires. That Baby sounded so good, and very professional. I thought about dressing the rest of the kit with the 2.3mm hoops, but bought a Yamaha Live Custom instead. Great Picking Man!
A sad and happy day for me - just placed an order to replace my hard working 1988 Yamaha Power Vs with a new set of these Stage Customs (in natural finish). I would like to thank you for this video - and your other videos as well - for showcasing this kit to show how good they can sound! I've been playing Yamaha drums since I started playing...can't wait for delivery day!!
Can't believe a kit this inexpensive can sound this good!...Of course, your ability to tune and play certainly helps. Thanks for sharing and Happy Drumming!!!
Sound great to me and I’m a DW guy. Today I purchased a Yamaha Stage Custom snare in robin’s egg blue. Thought I’d watch someone play the snare to see what they thought. I think the YSC sound fine. Thank you.
Nice playing and nice sounding kit. I have 3 DW kits and a Yamaha oak custom and I went out and bought 2 of these stage customs after hearing this video. Amazing drums for the money
I bought a full kit (plus the 5.5 steel snare which is AWESOME) a couple months ago after buying the birch snare as a gigging workhorse. My Recording Customs are going to happily stay home now, these SCBs are the real-deal, I will have no qualms taking them live or into the studio. Fantastic drums!
I work at a music store and we got a few of these in and I was able to set them up and I'm already a fan of yamaha drums but the only thing I would do as an "upgrade" to these drums is change the hoops to a 2.3mm or get die cast hoops or like in the video; wood hoops. it will surely improve the sound. Out of the box though these sets still sound really good for the price. (change the heads cause the ones it comes with suck). Hope my input helps anyone. awesome video!!
I'm mainly a Pearl player when it comes to my drums, percussion, and hardware. But I got to give it Yamaha, this is easily the best drum kit you can buy for under $1,000. It'd be a great investment for a young player or to use as a gigging workhorse kit.
I use a stage custom birch at rehersal.great all around drum set, great price point, now if they.could.just give some vintage wraps I'd be in line to buy one.
Thanks for the review man. I've been waiting patiently for your vid and for my new honey amber set. They have them on back order right now (which is a good thing). Thanks for all that you do man I'm going to continue to follow your videos.
Just picked up a set last week, 20in kick and 14in floor tom. These puppies sound amazing! I also have a set of maple custom absolutes, which will no longer being going on gigs. I switched out the rims for the 2.3 mill dinahoops from the absolutes and it fattend up the sound just a bit. I put Evans G1s on the tops and it's exactly the sound I was going for! Once again Yamaha FTW.
You know how many times I've had to apologize to my PHX kit for never taking it anywhere nice anymore?! These shells are easily 30% lighter, they all fit in the back seat of my truck and I wouldn't stress even half as much if/when they get nicked or scratched up. I heard these things on a playback of a live recording from a weekend of theater shows I played and it freakin' blew my brain. The 14" floor sounded like a low tuned 16. This is a high end kit, man. No question.
These drums sound great. I like them better than some of the $6K-$10K DW collector kits I've heard. They sound bright and clear and great playing helps too...
Definitely when it comes to the Collectors and "Exotic" woods. I did buy the DW black nickel over brass snare for under $400 and it is a nice snare for the money. I'm thinking of buying one of these Stage Custom kits for gigging. It looks like the best deal out there for the money. They sound great and Yamaha's hardware is solid. You can't go wrong..Great video..
Lovin' your videos man. Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge. And excellent playing/touch. This is giving me so much info for when I can do it someday. So glad I found you.
I'm owner of two Yamaha drums kit, old stage Custom and Live Custom Oak. I ask myself if there is a really different between both. Every time I hear a new Stage Custom I make the same question.
Your set sounds great.... aside from master tuning (really your Tom's, bass, snare... all sounded deep and strong. Love the beat too.. real mellow. Jazz like...
I tried Stage Custom, they are super easy to tune and have very harmonic clear tone! I have never heard more melodic drums and I played high end drumsets.
I was looking at the Natural or Honey Amber but that Pure White kit looks... gooood, especially with those hoops Sadly, the hoops cost 2 or 3 times what the kit does.
Hey Rob, any hoop or wire upgrades made to that snare? Know the 10 lugs will make a difference, as I'm sure 2.3 triple flanged hoops would as well. Sounds great either way.
Given that these drums sound as good as they do at such a low price point, you have to wonder how much sonic "hype" is employed by manufacturers when they discuss ply thickness, species of wood, etc. Granted, Mr. Brown has made some upgrades. Obviously the finish is a cost factor, and an exotic veneered kit should cost more than a solid color lacquer. But in terms of actual *sonic* difference, if you closed your eyes and listened to this clip, would you be able to tell the difference between these Yammies and a much more expensive kit, like Sakae Almighty birch, or Sonor birch, etc? I'm not sure I could.
You say they sound good mik'd and for recording but what about un-mik'd (except for the bass drum) in a small bar setting? I have currently a DW performance and a Saturn kit and i would like to add a 3rd budget kit for gigs and i'm seriously considering this one. BTW very smooth playing. I enjoyed listening.. ;)
I simply need to know what heads you're using on that lovely stage custom kit. I have a cranberry red one in the rock configuration (10, 12, 16, 22) but have always used thicker 2 ply heads. I love the tone out of yours!
Recently bought this type of set,l. Mainly because of my enthousiasm about Yamaha (own a hipgig junior Manu Katche; previously had the original Maple Custom - the best - and a Beech Custom). Price, (shallow) sizes of toms and functionality convinced me to buy it...online 😄, without seeing nor hearing it live. It is impressive in both sound and overall quality. Only remarks and questions from my side: - all Shells have blue ink Dots inside. Is this common, like a quality control ? - snaredrum only sounds pleasant to me in (very) high tuning. Could this be eexplained nu the usage of original Remo UT coated head? - compared to my Pearl Masters Studio BRX: the Yamaha Shell is light weight and airy/responsive. The thicker Pearl Shells tend to have more definition and sound a luitle more sophisticated . Hoe does the SC Birch compare to the Recording Custom (and a Pearl Masters Studio BRX with diecast hoops)?
Rob, I'm curious what heads you prefer with this kit? I bought the natural finish and for the money it's hard to beat. I love how it plays and sounds. I put coated heads on it but other than the 14" floor tom the toms feel a little choked out with the coated heads. I was hoping for a warm, more vintage sound but I'm not sure it was a great choice for this kit. What would you recommend? Thanks, great videos and your grooves are inspiring.
+Travis Woodall When I picked up my new(er) black Stage Birch kit, I put a set of Evans G12s on it and loved them. But right now, I'm all about the UV1s. I'm putting those on everything now. There are videos reviews on both heads on my channel. Check 'em out. You'll probably be happy playing either one.
Speculating here but I’m guessing Evans G2 Coated on the batter for the Toms and G1 clear for the reso head. The bass is probably a single ply emad batter and Evans inked reso. Snare looks like a hydraulic blue and maybe a standard snare side from Evans. Take that with a grain of salt though
Great review and very cool playing, Thank You. I've been checking out this exact kit in either the Natural or Honey Amber finish. These drums seem to sound good in all--or most- of the RUclips videos I've seen them demoed in. Looks like you used a pretty detailed mic set-up along with the acoustically designed room. What kind of mics did you use? Those wood hoops look super cool, do they help with the tone/sustain? I am comparing this kit to a Mapex Armory in a similar price range, the Mapex comes in at about $150 more. It has the hybrid Birch/Maple shells and comes in much cooler finishes. Not sure if it sounds better than this Yamaha Stage Custom though...any thoughts or opinions about that?
+Richard Alan Haven't spent any time with the Mapex stuff so I cant really comment. I CAN tell you, though, after having and gigging with this kit for a year now that you'll be 100% satisfied and extremely impressed with it. I have wood hoops on it in this clip and as much as I'd like to tell you that they affect the tone & sustain, they don't really. At least not enough for me to notice or care about. The hoops, for me, are more for the aesthetic impact. Much like throwin aftermarket chrome 20" rims on your Chrysler 300. They'll sound just as good with the stock flange hoops on it. My mic set up is pretty basic here with Beyerdynamic Opus 88s on the toms, mainly because of how simple they can clip on to wood hoops, and a couple of Apex 435s for overheads. But they're just here to amplify the kit. No additional EQ was added here which if you listen to the toms in a good set of ears is pretty friggin crazy. I love these drums. Apparently so does Mr Weckl. I haven't taken my PHX kit out in a year. Yamaha puts fancy finishes lower on the list of priorities, which is why you don't see many frou-frou sparkles, sunbursts, wraps or fades on their drums. Just a handful of simple, nice clean finishes to choose from.
Hey! Have you checked the bearing Edge of the resonant side of the snare? I got the exact kit 5 months ago and just realized that it is completely flat on 2 sides of the bearing Edge, it doesn't have the angle all the way around, which cause the head to sit properly. 😕 Is it normal?
+Dennis Donnelly Evans Onyx, Dennis. My current favourite drumhead, man. There's a full review of the Onyx heads on my channel if you want to find out more about 'em.
Karthik Jagannathan Those are Yamaha's Vintage Wood Hoops, man. You'll see them on a few of their signature snares as well. I'm not 100% sure if they're still in production, though. But there's a lot of custom shops making sweet lookin' wood hoops these days. OH, and you're welcome. :)
Rob Brown Thanks for writing back. I live in Belgium - its not that easy to find any custom shop here. If you know any in the US or wherever else, please let me know...and I'll connect with them...! ;-)
A friend of mine hipped me up to these guys in Wisconsin USA. They make some pretty sweet looking hoops. They do foreign orders as well. www.stellardrum.com
+Joel Frank They're Evans Onyx on the top AND bottom of the toms, Onyx on the top of the snare and I don't know about the snare side, and Onyx on the kick drum batter side, and Inked by Evans on the front.

Hi Rob are these the new Chinese made Yamahas made in there new factory ?
+drumrnva , well said! they DO sound nice
What’s the benefit of wood hoops and where can I get them ?
Would any wood hoop work on the Stage Custom? Whats a good store/dealer online?
Sweeeeeet!👍🙂
Hi Rob, can you please tell me what's your current cymbal set-up? Thx!!!
You say they sound good mik'd and for recording but what about un-mik'd (except for the bass drum) in a small bar setting? I have currently a DW performance and a Saturn kit and i would like to add a 3rd budget kit for gigs and i'm seriously considering this one. BTW very smooth playing. I enjoyed listening.. ;)
Are they tuned by Your technique of tuning drums? Shown in older videos :)
They sure were. :)
Bro, is that the 20” kick?
Bateria bonita
I simply need to know what heads you're using on that lovely stage custom kit. I have a cranberry red one in the rock configuration (10, 12, 16, 22) but have always used thicker 2 ply heads. I love the tone out of yours!
He’s prolly rockin g2 coateds
Recently bought this type of set,l. Mainly because of my enthousiasm about Yamaha (own a hipgig junior Manu Katche; previously had the original Maple Custom - the best - and a Beech Custom).
Price, (shallow) sizes of toms and functionality convinced me to buy it...online 😄, without seeing nor hearing it live.
It is impressive in both sound and overall quality.
Only remarks and questions from my side:
- all Shells have blue ink Dots inside.
Hi Rob: Is that a 13 stroke roll you're playing at the beginning of each measure, leading with left hand. It sounds dope.
+Pat McGinnis Actually I think it must be a 15-stroke roll
Sir, What kind of heads are you using? i swore that floor tom was a 16"..crazy low end
I could be wrong but I believe those are Evans Onyx’s
What heads did you use on this kit
Speculating here but I’m guessing Evans G2 Coated on the batter for the Toms and G1 clear for the reso head. The bass is probably a single ply emad batter and Evans inked reso. Snare looks like a hydraulic blue and maybe a standard snare side from Evans. Take that with a grain of salt though
@@Ebidle He's using clear heads in this video. So, maybe G2 clear?
Marko Marković yeah that sounds about right
Raven Black is pretty.
Snare beds
Hi Rob What heads are you using on the kit. Lovely
+Dennis Donnelly Evans Onyx, Dennis. My current favourite drumhead, man. There's a full review of the Onyx heads on my channel if you want to find out more about 'em.
Mate, your videos are extremely helpful. Thanks a lot.
What make wooden hoops are those? on your toms?
Karthik Jagannathan Those are Yamaha's Vintage Wood Hoops, man. You'll see them on a few of their signature snares as well. I'm not 100% sure if they're still in production, though. But there's a lot of custom shops making sweet lookin' wood hoops these days. OH, and you're welcome. :)
Rob Brown Thanks for writing back. I live in Belgium - its not that easy to find any custom shop here. If you know any in the US or wherever else, please let me know...and I'll connect with them...! ;-)
A friend of mine hipped me up to these guys in
Wisconsin USA. They make some pretty sweet looking hoops. They do foreign orders as well. www.stellardrum.com
I noticed the Evans Logo. Im wondering, which ones are you using in this video! Coated or Clear G2's or etc....
+Joel Frank They're Evans Onyx on the top AND bottom of the toms, Onyx on the top of the snare and I don't know about the snare side, and Onyx on the kick drum batter side, and Inked by Evans on the front.
