This is pretty much where the Friday the 13th series crossed the line into self-parody. It's also where Friday the 13th transitioned from slasher film series to supernatural horror, with Jason as an unstoppable reanimated corpse, putting it in the same category as Hellraiser and A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Jason Lives is the best movie in the franchise because it's one of the few times the filmmakers looked at each other and said, "This is really silly. What if we don't take ourselves seriously and try to make something fun?" And the self-parodic tone, against all expectations, worked!
It's a shame that all the other sequels after this one aren't nearly as fun.

That may be one of the reasons it's not one of my favorite movies in the franchise, and why I don't really like to regard it or anything that came after it as a legitimate aspect of the same continuity as the first four or five. Of course, "Zombie Jason" is a major factor and something with which I have a love/hate relationship. I like the idea of an indestructible undead character, but I think I would prefer it be someone other than Jason Voorhees. I also am put off by some of the comedic elements, and the overall comedy movie thing of breaking the fourth wall. By that I am not solely referring to what the characters do which constitutes a violation of the barrier between the movie's universe and ours, such as speaking to the audience, referring to the fact that they're in a movie, etc. Such movies contain many different cues, etc. that are meant to call attention to those who made them. This makes immersion difficult if not impossible, which is fine for that kind of comedy movie, but I don't care for it in a Friday The 13th movie.

Reggie from Part 5 was the one who was supposed to get killed in the graveyard. However, John Shepherd turned down reprising Tommy, so Shavar Ross (Reggie) and Melanie Kinnaman (Pam) were also dropped from the movie, as they were considered a package deal when it came to the series. Also, they were gonna try to introduce Jason's father in this movie, but it never came to fruition.

It was originally meant for Tommy to be the new Jason, but the audiences demanded Jason to return and thus this movie. The reason why the actor from part 5 didn't return as Tommy is because he became a born again christian and he wasn't no longer interested in being in horror movies. Our audition was a version of the "under the bed in the cabin" scene (what Were you gonna be when you grew up?).
I WAS offered a featured extra part (which I assume is the kid that snarky is always talking to), but decided to keep working in the Atl Theater show.

My favourite kill in Jason Lives is Nikki getting her face pushed through the side of the camper.
While I do enjoy Jason Lives for what it is, it is not my favourite in the Friday The 13th franchise. Out of all of the "Zombie Jason" movies, it's my favourite just because it's a fun ride, but for me the series as a whole goes downhill the moment they went into supernatural monster territory.
I like my horror movies to legitimately scare me. Supernatural monsters like vampires, werewolves, and zombies don't frighten me because they don't exist. And if something doesn't exist it's far more difficult for me to suspend my disbelief. Out of all of the supernatural horrors, the only ones that frighten me are ghosts, as I grew up in a haunted house so to me ghosts are 100% real. So to me something like Amityville Horror, Poltergeist, or A Nightmare On Elm Street is very scary.
This is why I enjoy a well made slasher. Homicidal maniacs/serial killers are a very real thing. I think that the statistic on serial killers is that there are around twenty of them active within the United States at any given time. The possibility of someone picking up a knife or an ax and going on a killing spree is very, VERY real. Which is what makes the earlier Friday The 13th movies so damned scary to me, because something like that COULD happen. In fact, if you look at all of the mass shootings that have happened over the past few years you could say that things like that DO happen. The killers just choose an AR-15 over a machete, but the end result is pretty much the same.

Part 6 is one of my favorites because the movie knows how silly it is. It doesn't try to be a serious horror film, it's just here to have a good time with some creative kills and a good sense of humor.

So we clear on Jason's evolution so far? He went from a dead kid in the lake to a grown ass man seeking revenge for the teens who killed his mom (who herself was avenging his death...but whatever) and now, he's the walking undead.
It took 6 movies but we're finally here. Don't worry, Jason hasn't quite yet achieved a final form so expect more retcons to come.

    • @joealine77
      @joealine77 3 года назад

They don't do a great job of making it clear, but he didn't actually drown as a kid. He most likely washed up on the opposite side of the lake, got lost in the woods, and survived by eating berries and small animals, until he finally found his way back to the camp just in time to see his mother decapitated. Then he made the camp his home and killed anyone who came around until Tommy killed him with a machete. Then Roy took up the mantle. Then Tommy's dumb ass resurrected him, making him a zombie for the first time in the franchise

You, Me, & The Movies Great reaction dudette. Keep up the great work. "Jason Lives" is also my favourite of the franchise, dude. I love it's tone and sense of humour. To me, it's the "Friday the 13th" movie that the others were perhaps trying to be but kept on restricting themselves from good old-fashioned comedy. Plus it's just such an entertaining slasher movie. Still though, the 1980 movie is my second favourite due to it planting the seeds for one of the most well-known (and beloved) horror franchises. I think my favourite kill in "Jason Lives" is the guy who gets his arm torn right off as Jason just stares at it then. Too funny.

Since none mentionned it (it seems) the sheriff's daughter actress is Jennifer Cooke, she also was Elizabeth Maxwell/the celestial child in the TV show "V".

This was the one that set the stage for the rest of the series, where Jason is truly unstoppable and implacable. It also shows that the series was supernatural all along. Jason clearly still has a working body, fresh eyes, and fluidic blood, despite being dead and buried for ten years. And he was dead from having his head chopped open multiple times by young Tommy. And yet, a bolt of lightning brings him back. How? Jason was never truly dead. He was basically just unconscious, perhaps mentally trapped in Hell, unaware that he could wake up and “live” again at any moment. The lightning didn’t give him live; it just made him aware that he still COULD BE aware.
This theme carries the rest of the series, and also supports my point a few movies ago that Jason did in fact drown as a kid and just lay there at the bottom of the lake for 20 years until his mom died, and he got so pissed that he just woke up again, jumped out of the lake at Alice, and made his body grow to what it would have been if he had lived to chase her down later. Jason was always able to cheat death, though we still don’t quite know why. But it’s his thing. While others, like Michael Myers and Leatherface, are just really tough and don’t actually die, Jason DOES die… and then just gets right back up again and keeps going anyway. He’s like the Terminator, only a zombie instead of an Android.

In the cabin with the counselors there is a brief shot of the David Bowie album Aladdin Sane on a table. That was also the working title of the movie where they shot it so the locals wouldn't know it's a Friday the 13th film.

The campiness of this epi was in line w/ the 80s horror comedy thing as established by American Werewolf in London that other directors/writers wanted to emulate. Matter fact, Tommy was the main character in 1985's The Return of the Living Dead pt 1 (which everyone here HIGHLY recommends) which was definitely one of those dark comedy horror films w/ a nice balance of amusing characters and dialogue/situations, absurdity, and gore. EG: one of the characters is chased by a midget zombie, that kinda thing. However, I need to give props to the ORIGINAL 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre which was really before AWIL in injecting a little absurd dark humor into the flick while other parts looked like nothing short of a snuff film. It was a bizarre combo. The older fam member comes home to lord over Leatherface and his freak brother in an absurdly comical way right after we saw Leatherface act like a killing machine. He was really just a deformed buffoon who couldn't speak in other scenes.

Yeah, everything down to the pop rivets holding the strap on the mask (not to mention the shape and coloration of the mask itself, the latter of which makes no sense since this mask wasn't in a grave for however long) was clearly a product of someone (apparently Tom McLoughlin) watching the opening of Part 5.
