REI Presents: Engaging The Curve

- Graham and Shannon have been dating for 5 years and currently live together in Bend, OR. They’ve each had professional athletic careers in two very different sports: Ultimate Frisbee and Alpine Climbing. This is the story of how they share their respective sports with each other, and how the idea of learning to mountain bike was inspired by their community and environment.
Together they will step back into the mindset of beginners as they learn to mountain bike. With crashes and frustrations alongside the joy of progression, they whoop and swear their way through this comedic and painful learning curve.
With some (but probably not enough) experience under their belts, they head for the remote hills of Eastern OR to test out their new skills. Inspired by friends’ stories of mountain bike packing in wild parts of the world, they explore the wilderness in their backyard while seeking out engaging terrain to shred.
As they wrap up their journey, they reflect on the experiences of learning to bike and how it helped them build a stronger relationship with each other and their environment.
SO GLAD you are showing beginners! Fabulous couple.
This Portlandia episode didn't make me laugh once. Okay, I lie, the frisbee bit got me chuckling.
Such a great way of conveying “there’s a start to everything”
I love this one , that was an incredible adventure shared
. REI is killing it.
"We found mountain biking, it's great. We're really bad at it."
First bike vid I've watched where the riders were not shredding $10k bikes
DRT 2.1 is a pretty nice bike though to buy as a beginner. Not that I believe they actually had to buy these bikes...
Once REI sees they can make a profit off these two I am sure they will be given more expensive bikes.
Lol. For reals.

The great thing about cycling is, it doesn't matter how good or bad you are, just ride 😁😁 love this video, very inspiring and such a cute couple, whose enthusiasm is infectious 😉😉❤️❤️😉😉
Loved the video slot. You both now have some wonderful memories to share for the rest of your lives, and to tell your children about it later on in life. Thanks guys and li e long and prosper.
Always love watching REI Presents
What a very inspiring video, and a great couple who have a genuine love for one another and mountain biking, I’m a cyclist and my boyfriend isn’t so if I show him this maybe he’ll be encouraged to ride with me 🚴♂️👍👏👏👏👏great video guys, love it, and love you 👍❤️
This look like a blast. Must have been an unforgettable experience
Great video. Why are they clipped in? Why is it that so many people get talked into going clipless right off the bat?
Cuz it's more efficient?
I biked the Ozarks (Missouri between Branson and just above Springfield - Sac River, Busiek both sides of the highway ) frequently in the winter (road bike summer) I preferred the toe cage with sandals. Me feet would dry quickly after getting wet and the cage protected my toes.
Loved this. Stuck in isolation in a London hotel, just what I needed thanks!
Well produced video good job! - oh i remember these days, you have taken me back to when i first met my now wife 20 years ago. i cant wait until our kids, as much as i love them, are old enough to stay at home by themselves because we have already been planning some riding tours. And yes there is going to be some major ups and major downs, but when you strip everything else back, 'its you and me babe, i got you and me', to get through.
Now, they’d get gravel bikes. The full spectrum from road to single track, fire trail to urban broken pavement. I love my Giant Revolt. It gets me off my criterium race bike and back to the heart of cycling; exploring.
Nice to see beginners. Great video. Great concept.
Who on earth could give this a thumbs down? my mind boggles...
I want to do this with my future other half!!!. Love Mtb!
Great couple and so proud have shot highlights from Shannon's ultimate career at both Oregon Fugue and Seattle Riot. Good luck on your continued adventures.
So bike packing a remote corner of Oregon as beginners didn’t destroy their relationship. If they can avoid clashing down the line as two extreme type A personality hipsters, they should enjoy many years of happy life together.
Loved the video, to be honest. Wish you guys the best. Pretty sure neither one of you would last half the car ride to get there with me.
Incredible story telling. Awesome couple, I wish to be like them
Very good video guys Just have fun whether your clipped or unclipped. Being clipped you have more power in your legs. And whenever your not bikepacking, atleast train in gravel so your legs can get stronger
Super awesome, heartwarming film. Thanks guys.
Nice video, great adventure, now get rid of those clip-less pedals, get some nice flat pedals and some five-ten shoes and you well really feel free, take care
Scott Gibson what is it about the cycling community that makes everyone crap on everyone else’s equipment choices? Do what makes you happy. Use what makes you happy.
@@austinshoupe1506 i was going to buy a new saddle for my bike today, but know i have to ask Scott of it's okay.
What an experience. Great trip. Thanks for sharing
Forget the cycling; it looks like climbing HEAVEN!?! He must've been wishing he'd packed his trad rack, harnesses, rope and shoes for them both...
glad to see REI giving more attention to bikepacking
if nothing else you started out in the right car. We are car twinnies! The xc70 is a backcountry battlewagon.
I know this is an old post but it would be great if you would post their route.
Very cool the trip and memories are priceless beautiful area!
Bike packing looks like great fun.
That was so cool!
I think i'm good at mountain bike riding but i'm really just like you guys when you were falling off.🤣
Thanks that was fun. Thanks.
Inspirational! Awesome job! Makes me want to try surfing. I don’t know why but I’ve never done it before.
Truly inspiring...
Nice! I think this is probably a better advertisement for mtbing than a video of enduro bros shredding. Fun to see some beginners getting out there, and doing something adventurous. 7:50: “I think my chain’s off. Haha, you “think”? ;)
Pretty familiar with the Owyhee below the dam... jey REI posting a link to the route would be neat.
Great video and story and wonderful tent !!
Great story, amazing footage!!! Aloha from Maui, Hawaii!!!!
This video is great!!! Lol we are bad at this and then fall to the ground love this
Mistakes don't matter as long as you are having fun💕😂
great story telling
Dude these people are awesome.
Mostly, I want to know who sold these guys clipless pedals? Was it you REI?
Cute couple, great trip. Not sure if I like the muffin or the buttercup better, but he sure has the moves! lol.
I wish my wife loved doing the things I like to do , like this couple. So jealous 😞
lol same, my wife cried when she saw a snake pass by her in the wild once. XD
Their biking skills are exceeded only by their dancing skills :)
lovely. makes me feel even i can do it
I LOVE THIS.
Love this one!!
Where can I get that T-Shirt from (shown at 0:52). It looks like a derivative of the Unknown Pleasures album cover.
Awesome story!!
What were the trails they were riding right before they start talking about the owyhee?
Awesome Fun! Sent to my GF.. lol...
You can't do that unless you own a $15k bike...jeez. I just got back into biking at age 55 and the amount of bike snobs out there nowadays almost makes me want to quit. I have triple front chainrings, flat pedals, make my own coffee and don't drink IPA....so I'm a loooooooooser in their world.
MARK I HEAR YOU!!. My main bike has Triple chain rings , cost me £280 bike from Ebay. It will go anywhere.
I used to ride 100 - 150 miles a day, 5 days a week as a city bike courier from late 80's through to the mid 90's. The bikes were well simple back then. We just got on with it and I loved it. Still love biking, I ride everyday. I'll go bike packing with a rear rack and panniers, real strong and simple.
This bike packing thing is just a new money making racket.I just came back from western australia where did a trip of 1 200km on a 4x4 only route...I used Second hand surley pugsley...because it was in the desert wich I bought for $1 200 with panniers....and walla....dont fall for this bullshit.Bicycle adventures are the cheapest holidays on earth.I own 7 bicycles and all of them I bought second hand. You got money to throw around...good on you...you work hard for it...I live for cycling...less money I spend...the more I can ride...met a guy i the outback of austrslia...evetything was is sacks tied to bike he bought for $30 on ebay....happy as lark!!!
Dude just do your own thing
Not sure who's hating on you, but you should maybe drink better beer.
Yeah they say about my 1996 bike. “how do you even make that move?” Just like I did in 1996. Paid 800 bucks still rollin. Have fun with what you got I say.
Very nice 👍
Beautiful landscape - couple therapy was not my thing.
Ultimate relationship goals.
BaoQiang Li is
great vid...... #when harry rode with sally
What a quality video making?! Awesome ye...
This is a dream trip. I would absolutely love doing this.... Unless I ran into one of the 100's of things that could turn you into a pile of bones.
Adds sign to bikes new super green ,but very cool they are getting out more need to do this get out of AC and live
I'm curious to know how you got the bikes, gear, camera equipment, and all the stuff not seen in the video to and from the ride. Cars, trucks, planes maybe. I appreciate enjoying the natural beauty of this planet on a bike ride but don't think that compromising the eco-sphere just to inspire sales and profit (REIs or yours) is anything to applaud. You'd jump at the chance to be flown around the globe to make vids about how pure and cleansing riding a bike can be I bet. Glad to see you got a paying gig, but if it was really about the bike ride you'd just ride out your front door and explore Oregon... it's plenty beautiful. I'm sure you could figure out a way to make money from it even if it isn't spectacular enough for REI.
🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
REI PLEASE fork over some decent panniers so they can stop carrying crap on their backs.
Does anyone know what trail this is in Easter Oregon?
فيديو رائع أنا أيضا أحب ركوب الدراجات كثيراً
Relationship goals! hahahahaha
Two thumbs up Buttercup
put a ring on it, friend... 5 years? Time to fish or cut bait.
"TIME TO GO GET INVOLVED LOL STRIAGHT FROM Austin aUGIE LOL
4:53 "Professional cycle-cross racer" for crying out loud...
Why did 11 people give this a 'thumbs down'?
Because they realized that they do not need their 10k bikes to have an adventure.
It is does not matter thumbs up or down for youtube channel.
Because they don’t have a bike buddy
It's spelled CYCLOCROSS, not Cycle Cross.
This is spoof. Right?
Try road touring there is nothing like it...
I wish I could find me an adventurous girl
These guys should not be clipped in.
Watching this is painful….😂
Love your eating habits ! Contact me - k? IF you have the time and read these blog comments... I'm studying nutrition right now. (Y)
"Beginner" cyclists who happen to be elite athletes. And just as cute as all get-out. Sorry, but their geeky teen schtick is annoying.
you had me until you said "morning muffin"
First five minuets comic fall and posed skull on rock is indicative of someone more interested in gaining followers than having any real content
get off the map
Yuppies. Let's overrun the Owyhees with the opt outside turds too...
