  • Independent consultant, and long-time drug activist, John-Peter Kools takes a walk up one of Amsterdam's oldest streets, the Zeedijk, outlining the history of the heroin based street drug scene that began there in around 1975.
He documents the changes and significant events over the years, and explains how and why the street drug scene in central Amsterdam came to an end.
A glimpse into the fascinating social history behind what is now one of Amsterdam's most popular tourist areas.

I moved over there in the 90s for about a decade. Had the best time of my life. It was my best and worse years. I was in the heroin scene. I still visit but feel like it’s missing it’s seediness. I still love this city but they’ve cleaned it up too much and lost a lot of the character and vibe of the place.

Its definitely more of a parody of its former self now I think , would have loved to have seen it in the 90s

Living in the USa with " a problem " I went to Amsterdam to get away from it all. Little did I know that Amsterdam "( of all places ) is not the place to go if you have " a problem "
My advice.. Dont go to Las Vegas if you have a gambling problem.
And dont go to Amsterdam if you have a partying problem

I have been going to Amsterdam since the late 80s to as resent has 2018 and hope to be going in September 2019
I have noticed there are a lot of places have closed down over the years , there are doormen now on the door at coffee shops don't remember being the case back in the 90s
We tend to travel out now to other parts of the Netherlands now
But stay in Amsterdam as our hub around dam sq I have to remember I am no longer 20 or 30 which was a mad time to be had in Amsterdam
now in my fifties the most dangerous thing I do in Amsterdam and around holland is try to get across the road with my partner and not
be run over by a bike or tram
But What I have noticed is people seem to smoke a lot of weed on the streets now more than years ago

times have changed world wide. you can't have scenes like this anymore. people are too obsessed with proving something, impressing others, inflating their ego to have a good time in places like a'dam. they are too busy spiting each other and the city to be cool. freedom is being lost there more and more.

Fascinating history but you cut way short the "today" part. WHERE do the drug users get their Heroin today ? What other drugs are they using these days ? Please don't leave us with the idea that they all live in shelters and cooperate with the Police.

It was not that bad, I think nobody got killed in a fight in the late 70is. it was very colorful, suriname must have made millions "daily" I have seen moms with a stroller next to a pusher. Cops on a horse chasing down the street. People skating across from the houseboats.

It was dangerous because of the illegality of drugs. Legalize it and problems will go.
