  • This great Interview hosted by Isabelle Brinkman. Mariah Carey, born on March 27, 1969, is a prominent American singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress. Known as the "Songbird Supreme" according to Guinness World Records, Carey is celebrated for her exceptional songwriting skills, an impressive five-octave vocal range, her distinctive melismatic singing style, and her unique use of the whistle register. She has left an indelible mark on popular music, contributing to the evolution of contemporary vocal styles, fusing hip-hop and pop music through collaborations, and popularizing remixes. She's also earned the title of the "Queen of Christmas," owing to the enduring popularity of her holiday music, notably the 1994 hit "All I Want for Christmas Is You," which stands as the top-selling holiday song by a female artist.
Carey first soared to prominence in 1990 with her self-titled debut album, guided by Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola, who later became her spouse in 1993. She achieved a historic feat by becoming the sole artist to secure their first five singles reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, spanning from "Vision of Love" to "Emotions." Carey's international success surged with albums like "Music Box" (1993) and "Daydream" (1995), both of which are among the highest-selling albums. These albums produced numerous hit singles, including "Hero," "Without You," "Fantasy," "Always Be My Baby," and "One Sweet Day," the latter of which dominated the US Billboard Hot 100 end-of-decade chart for the 1990s. After her separation from Mottola, Carey underwent a transformation in image, embracing an urban vibe and incorporating hip-hop and R&B elements in her music, as seen in the release of "Butterfly" (1997). By the close of the 1990s, she was hailed by Billboard as the most successful artist of the decade. In 2001, after amassing eleven consecutive years of US number-one singles, she departed from Columbia Records and signed with Virgin Records.
