- They shared the greatest race in Ironman history 25 years ago, Mark Allen and Dave Scott came on Breakfast from Kona to talk about Iron War. There's lots of laughs now for these two fierce competitors.
Dave Scott is from my hometown in CA and graduated from my high school, nine years before me. I remember seeing him run by our house many times while training.
Very cool!
Was there. One of the very few spectators out on the course. Remember like it was yesterday. These two were incredible. Nothing compares to these two.
It is fantastic to watch these two enormous triathletes talking about Kona, like friends and rival athletes who respect each other so much. A good lesson for any other athlete and sport.
I completed in Ironman87 and remember their epic race that year. I was headed out on the Queen K at about the 6 mile mark, for me, and remember seeing the helicopters heading my way knowing that they must be following the leaders. That’s when I saw Dave pulling away from Mark Allen. I finished in a pedestrian 12:31 finish, but this is a memory that I will never forget and I am now 74!
Great memory! Thanks for sharing.
Every triathlete should watch this interview. These are the Gods of the sport.
I realize this interview is six and a half years old, but I would like to add my respect and admiration for these two amazing sportsmen. They have such wonderful respect for each other and an amazing story. Whenever I need an object lesson at work or with my family about overcoming the impossible, the power of mindset, or just grit in general, I tell the story of the IronWar. I always include Dave Scott's comeback run in 1994. Thank you both for the wonderful examples you have set for many to follow on and off the race course.
7 years for me (just watching it now)! Both idols for me back before I did my first triathlon and eventual Ironmans
The training mindset and discipline of both Dave Scott and Mark Allen is beyond measure. Two incredible men and athletes. 1989 was one mind bending race.👍
Thanks for watching, David
DAVE IS A LEGEND AND WILL ALWAYS BE THE GREATEST !! 🌟 6 TIMES A CHAMPION AND WILL REMAIN THE GREATEST EVER !!! JUST LIKE JACK NICOLAUS IN GOLF 18 MAJORS !! VERY GRACIOUS OF DAVE TO GO THROUGH THESE INTERVIEWS about a race he finished 2nd ... they should be doing a Documentary on ALL 6 OF DAVES IRONMAN VICTORIES !! Dave YOU ARE the Greatest inspiration for millions of people worldwide ☆
19mins in Bob just shows his unparalleled knowledge of the sport. What a fantastic interview by fantastic interviewer.
Wow, amagine having breakfast with Mark Allen & Dave Scott in the morning.
I remember when i was fifteen years old, i saw the ironwar in french tv. It was epic.
I’ think it’s was very good revality for getting better more and more.
Best Iron Man interview ever
Great interview. Great athletes. Great competitions.
True honorable athletes!
I wasn't aware that these retrospective looks were around. As a 1988 finisher, it is fun to hear the perspectives of the "Mount Rushmore" of triathlon. I suppose Scott Tinley and Scott Molina would be the other faces.

TWO LEGENS!!
Dave looks insanely fit and youthful... he must be 60+ in that interview!
Amazing
A Cosmic Event
They look so fit still. Wonder if they still race, run, etc
They are both still very fit, but aren't racing any more...
I believe Dave just had a operation recently too. Correct Mr Babbit?
Dave Scott has a RUclips channel offering training advice. See ruclips.net/video/-2IH9p4cQJI/видео.html
. I think that he makes a living by doing training clinics. If you write in the comments, he is known for usually very kindly replying. Wrt Mark Allen, I don't know what he's doing nowadays. Scott Tinley, the other of the great three, is a university professor, he retired after going through hip replacement surgery.
Dave looks younger now lol
considering the all the new technology today what Mark and Dave did at Kona with most likely stand forever!!
UltimateDrivers Barrie probably subtract 20 minutes for today with technology/course change/nutritional information.
so if there had never been a Dave, it's conceivable that times in ironman would be no where near where they are.
Mark could have won 89 with an 8:20 without Dave there, but would Welch or Mark ever even have considered going 8:20 if Dave had not continually pushed the record down?
Unequaled
