    Does vr help you learn to fly? For instance if i spend a good amount of time in the vr sim will i be better off in flight school?

      Yes and no - it depends on the skill you're training. You'll need to learn the feel of the airplane in real life for something like, for example, flaring on landing. As the airplane slows down you need to add more and more back pressure right above the ground, the plane will tip upward and the runway will disappear from sight... the sim doesn't do a great job with that, it doesn't convey the intensity of it and it's very forgiving of hard landings.
      One big advantage, though, is on takeoff. If you get rudder pedals (you should), the sim will do an excellent job of teaching you to steer with your feet on the ground, which is very unnatural at first. Driving around the airport for the first time in real life was very easy for me, because I was already used to it. You'll learn that on takeoff, as you push the throttle up to max power, you need to smoothly apply more and more right rudder (right foot) and hold it there as you roll down the runway. This is an area where you'll get the, "Are you sure this is your first flight?" from your instructor. If you read a manual on the proper speeds and flap settings for approach to landing, you can rehearse those speeds and practice dividing your attention between the important instruments and looking out the side window to judge your relationship to the runway (this is where VR really shines, since you can't easily turn your head in a regular sim).
      So yeah, there are skills you can definitely practice, but you won't emerge from your sim training as a prodigy on your first lesson - manage your expectations on that.
      Last point - if you're looking to fly professionally, you're going to need your instrument rating. I'm told by all pilots - even the older pilots who look down on sims - that simulators are extremely helpful for practicing instrument approaches (looking at charts and doing math while flying the airplane). You can even sync your iPad with the computer so you can use the actual ForeFlight maps you'll use in the airplane, but in the sim.

      No problem bro, just trying to pay it forward. Ask a legit question and you'll find that even the big aviation RUclipsrs will reply sometimes. If you have any more questions for my amateur self, don't hesitate to ask.

    Excellent video! great comparison. Sticky notes come in handy.

      For inoperative equipment, PDLL - Placard, Deactivate, Log in maintenance records, double check if Legal. Yup, sticky notes are a great placard/deactivate tool when your vacuum pump fails and you’re just local VFR flying!

    After watching your other video, I invested in XPlane-11 and honeycomb alpha yoke for my oculus rift cv1. I am preparing for my ground school exam right now. I fly a paramotor/ppg, so I understand that you get to learn real life scenarios in actual training. I hope your VR sim let you master the basics ahead of time for your flight training. How many flight hours of IRL did you need to get your PPL? Also, what are those sticky notes on the dash?

    • @FlightHours
      @FlightHours  4 года назад +1

      So the sticky notes are "inoperative" plaquards. The vacuum pump was dead but we didn't legally need it for VFR flight near the airport so we ran the mneumonic PDLL (Plaquard, Deactivate, Log in maintenance records, double check Legality). You have to deactivate and mark any inoperative equipment, assuming you don't need it for the flight that day.
      I actually don't quite have my PPL yet - I have to do the long cross country (150nm+), then it's all checkride prep - I'm about 10 hours away from checkride. I have about 120 hours logged now. Why so many? Here comes a big list - if it sounds like I'm complaining, I'm not - my flight school has offered some unique opportunities and it's been a lot of fun!
      So I took a 16 hour round trip flight in the C172 from NJ to FL for Sun N' Fun, I logged about 20 hours in the Piper Turbo Arrow III for the complex endorsement (video in progress), I've got about 7 hours in the Piper J3 Cub for the tailwheel endorsement (still working on it), my original instructor moved on to the airlines so there were a few hours of make up work to do, and I can only fly on the weekends and the weather in the northeast isn't great so sometimes I'm grounded for a few weeks in a row & have to reestablish proficiency.
      Don't hesitate to reach out with any other questions. Keep uploading paramotor videos! Where do you fly paramotor, and where did you train?

      Thanks for this info. 120hrs of flight time is amazing. I live in Tampa bay area, so trained at Aviator for ppg in 2017. I will be a weekend warrior for PPL flight training as well. I hope I can keep my hrs close to 40 before the checkride, but that is a long time away. I am editing a golf paradise flight video, hoping to finish it soon after I finish fixing my computer.

    Excellent content. I definitely plan on investing in one of these oculus systems. I have a question though. Let’s say you want to look closer at the radio stack or an instrument. When you move your head forward with the VR headset does it move forward in the virtual cockpit or does the virtual cockpit head stay locked in place and just pan around?

      Thanks, it takes a lot of work, I‘m thrilled you’re enjoying it! Yeah if you lean forward your head leans forward too. You can also press a button on the controller to zoom further, which I use when looking at the GPS, for example, or to cheat when trying to spot a runway out the windscreen.

      Brian Monette I haven’t gotten XPlane 11 or anything yet (I plan to buy the full version instead of the demo when I have the money to) but the Oculus Rift is a really cool machine. You can do a lot with it, whether it’s playing a shooting game and immersing yourself there or just exploring a certain part of the world in a 3D landscape. And while I’m sure you’ve already seen it, the VR in XPlane is pretty damn cool (even from what I’ve seen in the demo)
