i like the fact this pack is high mounted has unobtrusive frame and allows flexibility of object carry below its main sac
we used to strap on car batteries in early days to this spot to power a high power searchlamp or power up radio sets for comms dipoles etc

yeah. really felxible. And it is eeasy to rip off the canvas pack and just have a bare frame. to strap on dead moose or something like that

I think I would be inclined to attach the LK35 pack to the SJ35 frame, both 35 ltr but I don't like the shape of the SJ pack, cheers for the heads up 👍🏻🇬🇧

    • @verysurvival
      @verysurvival  7 лет назад +2

it might not work . the frames are not the same could be that lk35 pack is too narrow, could probably do it but would look funny, could take the straps and belt of the SJ35 and add them to the LK35. that would make it more comfortable. the frame on the Sj35 is the frame from the LK70 pack , the 70 liter version , the straps and waist belt on the SJ35 are also the same on the LK70 . ruclips.net/video/--MlifEhLi8/видео.htmlm15s

nice retro period rigid frame pack for forests look up the us alice pack which has gone into new manufacturing reproduction due the increased levels of interests to retro packs people are returning to the more simplistic instinctive designs of pack as a kind of rebellions against the do the fandango!! kinds
some of the newer designs are over engineered or silly shapes sizes or harnessing that compresses your stomach area can cut in or has excessive design features!!
the biggest version of the alice pack can carry a lot of kit you can also strip it down take pack off the frame just use frame for really heavy items we used to use metal framed packs to carry heavy batterys strapped together for a rockface searchlight
for climbers stranded on cliffs or mt crags buttresses late at night to spotlight them at 3000ft away
not a lamp to be looking into!!!
    by accident
the battery power needed weight of batteries required a substantially rigid strong but lightweight frame these types of frame excel at providing strength with low or no bulk!
they can fracture under hard use
larger frames than this kinds shown here were responsible for a lot of deaths in their heydays!!
as sometimes lone hikers could get trapped by them in a sudden fall be inextricatably caught hung up in branches in vertical fall through brush get suspended in tree limbs that would skewer the pack frame behind wearers back sometimes also in areas like mt ridgelines after spending many hours walking up a calm sides of a mountain as persons with highly stacked rigid pack frames approached the final few feet of the crest or ridgelines got exposed to the full force of the wond sheers on the opp sides racing up the valley got launched by the wind action on the square panel that acted like a sail above the pack wearers head!
    against head winds!
got toppled backwards into a fall
by strong immed actions of the wind catching the large flat overhead surface sail area of these types of pack
any pack frame contained within the silhouette of your body like these sensibly sized more modest swedish forest environment type designs is good!!
but never the larger usa versions which used to stack weight high above yer head like a walking skyscraper!
the alice packs if harnesses ever do break can usually be fixed replaced in field after temp repairs using a split ring system so you can completely take off the main harness or waistbelt hold or have it on your lap conduct full repairs to area of harness worst affected then reattach the repaired strap with new split pins spares should be carried clipped through metal frame of pack
the inherent tensile strength of these little diameter pack frames is truly phenomenal
very very intrinsically strong frames which is why we used them for our heaviest gnarliest pieces of equipment to carry
after full pack ergonomical customisation so as what we carry actually fits like a glove onto pack then onto you
they can be poorly loaded configured and in rough terrain peoples can often pull on metal frames parts to assist pull a hiker up over diff terrain but this can lift pack off wearers back and create undue forces on spring clips or pack harness system
as it becomes a comp between frame and pack what gives first and in my exp its always harness that gives out to the incredubly strong frame i have expcd a few frames come apart after ridiculous usages issues but even then its hairline crack metal fatigues or mini weld issues from excessive abusive use it takes a real lot to damage one
and even then the beauty of it is that even a major joint or weld can be adequately repaired using a frapping knot to reconnect support loose joint or frame parts to rigid area of frame and function as usual!!
even on bad breaks it can be speedily repaired using para cord or tape until a tig weld or aĺloy repair fluxing agent can be used to spot weld the deficiency in frame
they are excellently simply designed retro packs are not perfect but once configured properly loaded with kit you arrive at a optimum pack that should hold or support heaviest weight high above shoulders head area
and lightest kit to bottom like sleeping bag which used to get often carried where you say heavy tent goes its better on these packs to carry poles sep to tent fly as the tent fabric in years gone bye was lighter unless csnvas than alloy poles which got stacked vertically aligned to your body down one or either sides
the tent cuz heavier went ontop
    the lighter kit bottom
following ancient nordic principles established with their traditional wooden rucsac v designs!!
which project heavy loads upwards above your centre of gravity above your shoulder line and head!
if you pack heavy kit too low it can affect the comfort of these type of packs over long distances over shorter distances it simply doesnt matter but if all day pack it sensibly wisely
as its surprising what a diff it makes as forest enviros are tree hazardous larger rigid pack frames are a less intelligent choices
than these modest proportioned swedish varieties
which are always sensibly designed strong and good
the shape of 35 litre bag ontop is very good
a lot of kit can be stowed in there the sinplicity of opening drawing also good
the idiosyncratic clasp swapped out if not liked
ive made 2 wooden packs before based on 2 designs one scandinavian the other nepalese both were surprisingly comfortable and in uses of one design actually felt far superior to many soft packs on mkt or bergens! which weighted loaded kit too much arounds your waist area! making you marginally unstable in certain postures or actions!
the advent of increased interests in these packs displays the rigid pack frames enduring benefits of design in certain types of backpacking
forest enviros are where it sits at most comfortably! exposed rocky high terrains where strong winds are prevalent id advise against these sorts of pack go for something softer body hugging integral to lower your windage profiles!
    or aerodynamics!
as mt rescue stats can attest to 5persons a year losing their lives to rigid pack frames others trapped or injured due to falls through thick brush getn hooked up by them and skewered by branches unable to get upwards and out suspended in trees
with broken shoulder or arm in pain from a sudden trail edge fall!
    the other

i once had to race to save a kid choking to death being garotted by the harness straps of a rigid frame pack in usa plus force incurred on his neck by extra large weight of his pack inverted as he got violently unexpectedly pushed booted shoved from behinds by a bully boy (not me on this occasions!!) whilst he was gingerly re tying up his bootlaces on a trail in remote wilderness
i hear screaming from girls as hes choking turning blue then boys start calling out urgently for me to come help him as they all stood there watching him choke to death!!
he was blue in face choking violently gasping for air and drooling all at same time
bent overs head to ground doubled up
pack frame alu top was resting on trail bed floor
he was now inverted in a A position unable to lift himself back up due to fact pack had flipped weight over his head inverted him after the shove down a steep trail
by a fat bully!! (not the humble trekker in this case although he was police questioned!! )
anyways i released his pack and let him cough splutter his way back to lands of the living
gave him chance to drain his lungs out of sputum spit cough etc in recovery head down position then when hed settled down sat him up on a rock gave him some cool water
    he guzzled it down
tears in his eyes still in
in shock i looked at his neck he had a harness strap deep red mark almost blue across his neck where harness strap pack weight had garroted him was a deep ridge left in his skin
3days later on parents day he still had it and his parents demanded from camp director how lil billy had got it!!
( i was tempted to blame it all on humble trekkers yt chanel promoting 1970s packs!! ) but no i honorably refrained from doing so!
got marched before the director to explain why to both director and parents why lil billy
almost got killed lost his head on a simple hike!
using a metal frame pack x3 sizes to big for him
which i had already warned camp director about his innapropiate kit for adults was issued to little kids i pointed this deficiency out before leaving to do a 10dayer in adirondacks wilderness
so when he tried to blame me in front of parents i took along the offending pack put it on lil billy who was there also showed them all where the hip harness reached to on his legs mid ways between knee n hip mid thigh!! region or areas showed them what occurred was due to a poorly fitting pack
that could not be adequately secured to a smaller individual even under normal circs without being violently shoved by a fat overweight violent impatient bully ( once again i do not refer to ht in this description) from behinds for blocking his way for too long whilst tying up his shoe laces!!
i therefore mlud rested my case
was dismissed exonerated and thanked by lil billies parents for quickly running from far back on trail & saving their sons life!! lil billy kissed me!!
however the ymca camp director took weeks months to ever look at me again such was the resultant rebellion he had from parents committee who funded his camp
once they found out his outdoor exped kit was not safe or appropiate to be used by kids in other words naff!
i then next week got called to main office to explain how a main mast and sails had collapses on to a group of childrens heads
in strong katabatic winds in wild mt area of upper adirondacks
luckily the sail padded impacts only some kids stunned
    which isnt a bad thing!!
    keeps em queiter!!
i then touched the camp director again showing him the waterlogging rot in bases of main mast made of cedar
    he aquiesced again
then it went on all summer like that in ends i got chairman of parents committee to ask parents to provide kit where necessary
they never had a lot of serious gear so i said sleeping bags are too deterioated bring yer own
    plus tents cookers
    clothing
    so i improved safety
they admitted in ends that they needed to raise 15000$ to replace broken or lost or unsafe kit that was just immediate emergency replacements of kit
    not general refurbs
i sat down director told him if he dont improve upon his kit i wont be taking anymore of his kids out
    into wilderness areas unsupported
esp after incident whereby our water safety naffed off after only spending 8mins with us meant to be entire day
tracking us offshore in a rescue boat on canoes on huge lake on a very windy rough day with strong katabatic winds
racing off tops of mts 6ft waves apeared
    outa nowhere
    8yr olds that cant paddle
    and canoes with zero buoyancy
    bags on frame interiors
me and a welsh lifeguard ended up hitching everyone together on one line as i was losing control of group even 200m from shore wed be 5miles offshore in no time paddling group to emerency beaching point onshore underneath a bright white birch tree & grove where due to storms we spent next 3days in wild bear country
not ever reaching out intended campsite then the rayban im too cool for school sunglass rescue boat turns up 3days of pergatory laters asks if we are alright?
i threw crew off their own boat when i got on made em swim to shore left em there to drip
as i ferried kids back to buses
miles away in a powerful multi engined dorey
speedboat the two supercool im too cool for school senior american egotistical dikhead counsellors asked me what did i do that to us for!
    shivering
after i got back to pick em both up
    i said cuz!!!
you were both meant to be our group safety
    for entire day
    as promised by our director
however it turns out that these 2 cool for school counsellors didnt work for our director despite being same org
but another director who was asked to do our camp director a favor on the day as he owned operated another camp nearer to our wilderness lakesides area
had promised our director hed provide us with water safety cover on the day!!
but that morning another director ordered the 2 counsellors to just leave our group exposed after only 8mins into journey virtually as soon as we all hit the water
they apologised no explanations just sped off!! leaving us without safety cover of a rescue launch in rapidly deterioating conds
so i ordered a beached landing
after trying to get group 15miles up this lake wind speeds and wave conds fought us tooth n nail
    all ways
kids ended up sopn wet tired staff morale was low
we had long ways still to go
were never going to ever get there rate kids were paddling
    so i called it quits
aimed for a land based activity sessions instead which kids & staff enjoyed!
the counsellors were told by their director that he could only offer safety for our camp director if it did not interfere with his own water activity program of safety
    so in other words
our camp director had been less than honest with us stating that our safety was guaranteed when it was not!!
i apologised to counsellors for taking this cockup out on them but i said to them you still zoomed away at high speeds never bothered to once come back explain to us why you were going and coud see us asking you gesticulating for you to briefly return to inform us what you were doing?
what had occurred was that camp director theirs had told them explocitly to ignore us 8mims after launching on water in a newer area in katabatic winds & storm squall conds!
we were stitched up between 2 blagging camp directors!!
our director being the worst blagger liar of the 2!
i refused to take anymore groups into wilderness areas along with welsh lifeguard who backed me my accts up
    as we were both flabbergasted
by their laise faire couldnt care less attitudes
    towards on water safety
until the parents committee their funders got winds of it
    what had occurred
    cuz i told them!!
    they werent impressed
asked for council meeting after 36 8yr old to 17yr old
    kids could have drowned
    the absolute ymca morons!

sounds horrific, bad things can happen on water, seems to be when bad really things go south with youth groups it is often with water involved. there was some poor girl on the Ten Tors that was crossing a swollen stream in a storm a couple years ago. poor thing went in and that was that, her pack was too heavy she couldnt jump across. something as simple as that can lead to tragic consequences. was an adult guide with her, he was responsible,s hould have seen the danger and carried her kit over and made sure she could cross, or turned back. just crossing a stream in a storm, underestimated by an idiot leader. stupidity and bad judgement the 2 biggest killers

Humble Trekker my mrt tavistock team were on that rescue it happened on a notorious little stream brook or very fast flowing river called the tavy it has the highest & fastest rate of descent in its upper reaches of any river in uk barring the river dee in scotland
      Which is 1st fastest flowing
Weve prev lost 2 search dogs in this same river and phil sanders one of our base vehicle controllers coordinators was in front of me on the same night as fastnet disaster in 79 we were mid way across on sketchy footing slippery weed fast flowing water up to our shins waists some places chest supporting one another all in various stages of gingerness
When a vocal lot at back fed up with waiting for us to move on said cmon whats holding it up there at front!!?
We had a deep hole in front of us that we were trying to find a ways around wed had gone under lifted floated away water was already shifting us off our footing
So couldnt move quickly without launching yself downstream into the darkness
Nobody down stream as catchers either
So phil in lead was strong but short we asked him could he move forwards he said doubtfully i dont think i can but i shall try we said to him dont chance it phil if its too much for you i said put rob who was behind me on same rope a huge guy 6.6ft prison farm laborer builder up front swap out the line you take his places cuz you are a bit too short for that deep water
He says yeh i know thanks for pointing that out lads!!
Hed already lost his search dog disapeared into the night it went 1m out jumping into the river then sped away sideways at 10x speed &
Gone!! Turned up 3days later after tracking its way across dartmoor
As phil leapt for other farside riverbank he put both his arms out to break his fall leap lunge across deep section and his arms disapeared up to his armpits in thick moss! Then water covered him i was outa his immed grab range without having to go straight into middle of real deep fast moving water out of my depth above my head with full heavy rescue pack on deep
      Water
But it was an emergency nobody else except rob saw it happen
      So i did it
I just instinctively lunged forwards grabbed the pack carryhandle on back of his berghaus cyclops rucsac
His head came up briefly to gasp enough air before reimmersions face first back into water now i was underwater with no footfall
So i was now in my trouble i found a underwater foothold last sec to step up to surface on
Gasped some air regrabbed phils pack pulled him back up n out
Of water then i slipped back went under in again this happened to me n phil about 3 more times phil was saying is that you dave whose got me i said yeh just dont move were on dodgy footing stay in places in balance if you can we will try get across downstream this is a bad spot to be he says choking coughing on ingested water dont i fkn know it!! He then says where has my dog gone? I said river took him!
He says ach he should be alright
He will prob get out bit later track his way back to us
      Didnt bother him
As we were trying to figure out where we were going to head to next as bank was a hollowed out overhang with a curtain of moss that looked solid but was air empty of soil behinds
Hence why phil went straight through it
Face first in a face plant went under water what made it bad was his pack was on only one shoulder as is recommended however he fell after he fell the pack flipped over his head forcing it down under water because he had no where to push back up on his arms he was powerless to get back up
We slipped off our perches by sheer power of water slid unders again just as were thinking oh no here we go again a huge muscular arm picked me n phil up together dragging is back onto a better rock behinds us it was giant rob
He said you pair of dikheads i couldnt see you two dickheads suffer
Anymore now let us get the fk outa here before one or all of us fkn drowns!
Until he said that we didnt truly realise how frign chancy a little tiny fast flowing river or brook was in full spate is brutal rnli says it only has to be above 3-6cms fast flowing water to destabilise ya footing! & then yer slip gone!!
I was also involved in the weymouth bay disaster when they lost 10kids in My kayak club we had the survivors whod survived it parents and kids back to bravely re establish their dented water confidences as some parent wanted their kids to get over it by getn back on the horse n riding their fears away again!!
Which was a brave moves other parents recoiled
So we had 2 thirds of the survivors to teach to refamiliarise build up their water confidences again so all instructors didnt want this session to go wrong
When i spoke with one of rescuers he said the saddest thing was that raf sea king was searching in wrong part of bay as wind had pushed them 5miles out away from being told by manager of centre to stay 100m within reach of beach
Two junior instructors took em out in strong winds which are killer for kayaks
Before they knew it they were in an all in capsize drifting offshore
The navy boatman crew who located the group after hours in water were using old navy lifeboats like open row boats high sided white
      Very high sides
      On gunnels
So they spotted group radioed to helo etc other rescuers theyd found them time was tikn bye before others could reach them
To assist so they started to pull them in but was a huge slippery struggle to pull them in over the high sides of these deep welled row boats they heaved n hoed rolling them sideways over gunnels in an pretty undignified manner but with best of intentions just wanted to get group out of freezing cold water
But the shock of being manhandled to heart
After suffering hypothermia made them start to have an embolysm in gutters of the boat they effectively had mini heart failures like sheep do if you overexcite them died one by one before they could receive further prof help or reach shore
In waterlogged foot wells of lifeboat!!
Others never had strength to hold on lucky ones only recovered survived
The amazing thing that was deceptive that was that they were coherent in water happy theyd been all found lost few on the way minds
That lulled the rn volunteer lifeboat men to lift em out alone
      Unguided or authorised etc
They apeared to be in better cond or morale in water
It was only when they experienced the phys manhandling over high sides of boat by their lifejkt straps constricted their blood flow breathing theyd been floating vertical in water then had to be rolled over sides horizontally this caused them to have a embolysm
And go into bodily shutdowns die rapidly!
      In bottom of boat!
      Im a qualified lifeguard
And have done an raf pilots sea survival cse and was prev aux coastguard
      And corps of canoe lifeguards
      And swim teacher
I swim dive surf and sail sea kayak!!
A lot in my time plus i was brought up in the water
So my dad threw me in off when not expectingit off our boat into deep water of sea
To see if i could handle choppy water not just pool when young he was in the navy
I almost got my feet chewed off by the propellor
      Getn back in
But have you ever tried getn onboards a boat from eye level with sea water to 4-5ft above yer head on a round barreled klinkered hull youll truly understands how diff getn inboards actually is and thats when yer feeling strong n healthy not suffering from many long hours of hypothermia both
The parents n the kids thanked us for our input sense of fun good atmos and sensetivity in reaquainting the survivors with the water again
As both parties were very nervy before entering into the sea or water ever again after this lethal disaster!
All oed centres rules standards were substantially changed
But not necessarily for the better!
Adventure education lost a bit of its original spirit
As govt them kneejerk reaction overlegislated to make safety of paramount importances killing a lot of the ord risks assoc with adventure!!

Actually i got part of that event wrong the royal navy lifeboat crews in open top row boats i dont think had any means of communicating that theyd found group until theyd reached shore or obtained mobi ph receptions!!
This is why time was lost by raf who were searching wrong part of bay miles away
If theyd had it comms time n lives may or may not have better been saved as rescue medics & advisory rescue drs on radio net freq would have advised inexperienced rn crews from inboarding them stopped or prevented it
      Therby causing this mass reactions
To stressful overboard manhandling! Via grip holds on their lifejkts!!

+david john Huxtable best bit of advice for anyone on trekking or boating that gets caught in dubious conditions. Stop, because wherever you will are going will still be there tomorrow when the sun comes out.

+david john Huxtable how many rescues start with? Well the weather was a bit shitty but we thought we'd go anyway...
