I was an assistant coach for our local high school football team this year! Our head coach knew how to give a speech just like this! And we beat our big rival for a second year in a row! This movie and Remember The Titans should be required viewing for high school football players!
I remember the first time I saw this movie when I was 11 years old, and I was the ball boy for our HS football team. We had made the playoffs for the first time in years, and we watched it on a charter bus on the way to the game. It was so much fun for me because the game was on the complete opposite side of the state so we had to leave early and I got to miss the entire day of school. We ended up losing that game, and I got sick that night with bronchitis, but the next day Shaun Alexander ran for 291 yards against LSU. The Tide doesn’t lose in Baton Rouge!!!!!
Roles as football 🏈 coaches sure seem to suit Craig T Nelson well; here and on Coach, of course. Seeing this scene again reminds me of the opening of the one Coach episode “The Loss Weekend” where Hayden(his character, head coach Hayden Fox of Minnesota state screaming Eagles) is giving a pregame pep talk to his players, just before they go out on the field.
Man, that was an amazing speech. And I'm Black and wasn't offended by the language in the context it was said. BTW, he had a Black QB in 1982. They didn't know about the magic in the Rifleman arm!
@Planet of the Idiots I never had to. I don't speak like that. Then again this movie was filmed in 1985 if correct and I believe he's just acting and not really a football coach using the N word in real life. Just a movie chief.
@@lbcoach2295 The Central Michigan Basketball coach got fired for making a very similar comment to his team. He wanted to tell his players (I'm paraphrasing) to be tough, play tough and bring out their "inner n-words". He meant it to be inspiring but one huge problem: He was White. And beyond that- it was just stupid to do. Just wrong.
@Mike Wynne ok. It's movie. I didn't mean to speak about using racist language. Relax. I just liked the way the ACTOR in the MOVIE delivered the speech. He was describing how the rich kids on the team they were playing thought of them. Just a movie, chief.
Lol yeah it sucks that peeps aren’t tossing the “N” word around like it’s nothing. GTFOH Who are the three people who liked that reply, I’m reporting it to your employers!!!?
Tank went to Furman and Mouse got into West Virginia.
I bet Tom used his Scientology to to make his moves Nice collar too
Western Pennsylvania football
I went to school with the Rifleman. He was a great guy and did’t let this fame go to his head.
Awesome. 👍
Man I didn't know he worked they're cleon from cool runnings
Leon , he was very young here
He was also tom shepherd from above the rim.

Love the “that’s what we are together “ part, awesome speech, great actor. Always come back to this clip.
That’s AMERICA! TOGETHER!
He went from the best coach ever to the worst coach ever in the span of one game.
Actually, one play did it!
Every blue collar small town kid can relate to this movie..It wasn't just a movie it was real life..
Tom was very young and handsome 💕

Please don’t record off a tv.
He said the N word at 1 min 23 secs lol.
That was funny
I'm Black so I ask this as simply as possible, welcome to the 80's.... AND
Uh, they used to say the n word in sitcoms and family movies of the week...Brian's Song would be rated nc-17 today..
could you imagine present day libs marching and burning theaters after watching this scene.
Nickerson before the game: “We’re gonna win together!” Nickerson after the game: “Come on, Salvucci! Let’s have a good cry!” 😂
Tom Cruise, the only cornerback to ever wear one of those horseshoe collars.
There wasn't much call for a 5'10" white cornerback in the NFL. But, he could do the job in college! The line of the movie!
@@Peraino 5'10? Don't flatter yourself Tom cruise. That's 3 inches too much.
🤣🤣🤣@@ericmacisaac
It was the 80s that was the style
@@ericmacisaac- actually 4 inches, like your Brociole 😆

The fella at 0:51 looks just like a young Gerard Depardieu.

Rifleman played by Walter Briggs, QB for Montclair State College (now University), in my hometown of Montclair, NJ. :)
Loved this movie I was in peewee when I first saw this
Extremely powerful pregame speech. Gives me chills when I see this clip.

How is the football game not on RUclips? Amazes me to this day!
It's because they lost in the final seconds.
These are high school kids? #19 looks like he's already in the NFL.
Lol
Guess AB never hear this speech 😖
Very inspiring until you fumble away the game.
Horrible play call by the coach he's the reason they lost.
I'm coaching football at the high school and college level for 24 yrs. Never not ever have a came up with such a genius speech.

Don't forget Shadow, Tank, Rifleman and Vinny Salvucchi.
Reminds me in the mid 80 s I had a feirly coach like Craig Thompson
All 5' 6" of Tom Cruise.
but he hit like a truck lol
Claims he’s 5”10 in the movie lol
Audie Murphy was that height. You coward!
Nowadays, after he threw out the N word he’d have been cleaning out his desk on Monday.
Exactly. Shows you how much things suck now
Lol. Everyone shocked at the "N" word. But "Polack" and "Dago" are slurs too!

Tom cruise was very young.
He was still gay during this period - this was before Scientology and he was still normal and happy!
We didn't quit. you quit.
I have aways wanted a football autographed by Craig T Nelson that is signed, “See this? This is a football.”
Lol.
That’d be smooth

I love 80s films, it was more interesting to see.
I’d run through a wall for this guy
Hands down the most inspirational pre game speech I've ever seen.
I had a coach like this in high school...hence the reason I was All State First team, twice.
Same here. This was a great movie. I've been through Johnstown a few times and this movie captured the grit of the town to a T
