HexTrak - A new, at home scaled modular model railroad system?
Просмотров 11 тыс.6 месяцев назад
A conversation, with myself, around some of my difficulties with model railroading at home, and an idea for something new. Hex-Trak, I'm calling it. A home-scaled modular model railroad layout system utilizing N-gauge Kato Unitrack and hexagon modules. We'll see how it goes... 0:00 Intro/my modeling background 0:30 My issues with layouts 3:13 Needs in a modular system 3:49 Hexagons! 8:12 Outro
Hello my name is David and I would like to know if you would make and sell me your module?
How thick is the plywood? Is 4mm enough or is it 6mm?
Please, Show a landscaped hex or two. And a ?universal? landscape side?
Very neat. I discovered HexTrak through that other channel a couple nights ago. The next logical step is some sort of ramp affair to allow moving from one level to another .... Also, the funky narrow gauge train is really neat!
I notice you haven’t posted for a while and I’m missing your content. 😢 I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but it seems somebody in the UK has ripped off your idea and gone into production: ruclips.net/video/f0k6mglIQ-M/видео.htmlsi=HIOLJBu7q5gaHEcW Not sure what this may mean for you and this lovely idea and community of yours. One bright spot is they seem to have figured out the turnout question.
Thanks for reaching out! I have just been busy with work and house stuff, but I'll be back with bursts of new content when I can. Jonathan at TrainTrax in the UK was working on the same concept, as a product line, and reached out when I started making my videos about Hex-Trak. We have chatted a few times around standards and possibilities, and those conversations have led to the Hex-Trak system becoming what it is, with bridges, tunnels, and more! The concepts and measurements of Hex-Trak are a system for all and, though I seem to be the first person that presented it online, I welcome anyone to make designs or products available. Happy modeling, and thanks for looking out for me!
I took up your switch/turnout challenge. Using a .png of my Hex cutting pattern, I don't have all the parts so I wasn't able to try it outside of AnyRail You need 20030 (S64), N Kato Unitrack, Straight 6.4cm. 1 20071 (S29), N Kato Unitrack, Straight 2.9cm. 1 20121 (R315-15), N Kato Unitrack, Curve radius 31.5cm, angle 15º 1 20240 (EP150-45L), N Kato Unitrack, Left turnout 12.4cm. (remote) (Compact) 1 S33 (S33), N Kato Unitrack, Straight 3.3cm. 1 Place the S29 before the turn out and the S33 and S64 after, That way the R315-15 should meet the center of the side. ( I hope )
As soon as I saw these (first via TrainTrax UK email newsletter) I wondered whether it would be possible in Z using Rokuhan track - after several hours fiddling with Rail Modeller Express and CAD, it seems like it works nicely with a regular hexagon 225mm side to side (2 x 112.8mm straight track) and a 195mm radius 60 degree curve, which should hit the edges just central :) An outer loop of 220mm radius would also fit, and Z gives a lot more scenic scope on a similar sized hexagon!
These really remind me of the PC game Dorf Romantik!
We've now made N gauge Hex-TRAK kits available from our website: ruclips.net/video/f0k6mglIQ-M/видео.html
Great video. I have been following Dave for years, and have also built my own On18 Loco similar his and to yours using the same Kato chassis. I did mine in styrene, and some found parts. ruclips.net/video/RpKQEC2GtW4/видео.html
I like the idea of how not every hex needs to have track to build out a scenery or layout. super cool!
That caboose is just the business, I do hope there will be more passenger cars to add to the train.
What an excellent tutorial showing the process from start to finish. Your presentation skills are great; the video was well paced, informative and didn't even scrape the edge of boredom!
Wow, thanks!
Adding the overhang on the new roof looks really good! It's nice to see your process as well, thank you for sharing. Great video!
Thanks! I like the look of the roof overhang too, though it doesn’t make much sense with the doors being on the sides and there being no platform on the front and back 🤣. But you know what I’m doing here? Having fun! 👍
Fantastic!!! You fill a niche of content that On18 modelers can't get enough of!!! Love your videos and excellent how-to presentation!!!
Thank you!
I love your approach and simple designs. If you start a Patreon, you could offer your Patrons the laser files…I’d gladly join, and I’m sure I can find a laser near me to cut the files.
That's fantastic. Thanks for showing the process. I'm going to have to clean up my work bench and give it a try.
I started following you since you started the hex module. Love the idea. You should start selling little kits of the trains and cars as well as the hexagons. I would buy them.
Thanks, I appreciate that! If I get into a situation where I can handle that kind of fulfillment, I will make them available.
That was a fun build. 🙂
Thank you! This was my first attempt at a longer, "walk-through" style video, and it was pretty tough! So, I appreciate that you enjoyed it.
Love this what a great idea - I also am new to the diorama and was getting my first model railway as a project. Getting some small n scale and landscaping to create a scene.
Like where you are going with this idea 😊
Like the larger size but the smaller ones are good too for maybe a sidings
Hint: plaza japan has the kato parts for a third of the Amazon price. Look also for Tomix, they have nice chea frames. That's what I'm working with now. Also the kato frame is almost the same size as a lego 2x6 block, so you can make a lego locomotive with this
What about with the taller sections if the tops and bottoms were the same, but you then had some type of support system to allow you stack them? So you just had flat pieces and supports to make packing easier? Then you could also keep stacking them and and end up with some crazy complex thing that was 4 or 5 levels tall if you wanted or just a large single-level configuration. This is getting really really interesting.
For sure! A system of tabs and slots (instead of finger joints) is being considered for this very purpose. This way all you would need to make elevated sections is 2 regular modules and a set of walls. Indeed if the tabs only go halfway in, you can stack multiples. 👍
@@TabletopRailroad Very cool!
This is sooo cool! I love this! Is there a way to adapt Kato’s premade bridge and viaduct pieces to span the gap?
The bridge will! The viaduct piers will work if your elevated modules are 50 mm.
Quite an interesting idea😁👍 Kato Unitrack has quite a lot of possibilities, and the shape of the module itself also has a lot to offer. The only limits are fantasy. How do you store your modules? Greetings from Poland,...
Very neat idea, as for the turn out bit you could shift the turn out closer to the center and have the curve come off at a 30° angle (if my math is right), but it would require a bit of custom chopping I'm sure.... or just use your flex track to make it work.
For storage compactness: As I understand it, you are planning to put buildings and other decorations onto the tiles, right? The underside of the elevated modules could slot over those decorations. You'd just need to not put a bottom plate under them, or make the bottom plate a very thin ring.
Love this idea. More than the Kati mini dioramas. Those are too small for some of my ideas
Hexagons are the bestagons!
Wow such a great idea sure wish these were a product you could buy it would be great for those that don't have access to laser cutters or saws keep up the great work.
Oh my goodness I've been needing this video so so much, I'm actually trying to design and build a budget locomotive from scratch! And be able to sell it in mass^^
Nice!
Next you need to create inclines so the lower level train goes up to the next level, then back down to the first level. 🙂
Inclines are not something I plan on bringing to this system. It’s meant to be simple, compact, and accessible. Inclines feel counterintuitive to me. It will just be two separate tracks running their own train.
This is absolutely BRILLIANT!!! Better get to the patent office!!!
No, no patents. This is a great idea (that I had as well, as will have had many others), and that we all can benefit from sharing should be reward enough. On a side note: Patents are for real new inventions. This is not that.
How can the track get from lower level to upper level?
I’m not looking to make that happen. I want to run two trains on independent loops of track.
Hi, please send me the link to that studio that you were talking about in the video. Thanks

@@TabletopRailroad Thank you
I'd love to use the Bachmann Rheneas chassis for kitbashes but it costs as much as the complete model from Bachmann Spares!
That lone curve piece is screaming for 60° crossings!!!
Doing something similar with G scale outside. Have a little gravel bed that I use modular plastic track with and battery locos. Everything can be easily moved/changed every time if I want to.
That’s awesome!
Thanks for saying so, definitely having some fun with it so far.
love how industrial this little loco looks i can imagine it trundling along either a narrow mountain pass or through a big expansive desert
There's precious little info out there on building On18 locomotives and rolling stock. I have Dave's videos bookmarked and now this one too. Your critter is top notch. Thanks!
I built this little Sn2 train in the early '80s. The locomotive started out as a 2-8-0 HOn3 kit from Round House Model Diecasting. It was cut down to an 0-6-0 and regaged to 9mm. The trucks under the cars are HOn3 trucks regaged to 9mm as N scale looked a bit too small for my tastes. It's been out of service for quite some time but between you and Dave Meek's work, I'm inspired to clean her up and put her back to work.
Now if I can just figure out how to post a picture here!
You can make it look like the logging locomotive (look at Heisler locomotive), and I think that would make it look smarts.
Neat critters!!
I've been thinking of something similar as well since I'm an avid model railroader myself but I live in an apartment so I don't have much space to work with. What I would do, and I've seen another gentleman from Japan do it, is to make baseboards much like the ones that you have but make then about 6-8" wide and fit them to the standard lengths of straight and curved track that kato has. It would be a lot like setting up a loop of Kato unitrack but just a bit wider so that you could do some scenery off to the sides of it.
this is really cool! The system could be more flexible if, rather than having a fixed ‘lid’ with track on top of the tunnel modules, regular modules could stack on top of them. That way the orientation of the upper level track wouldn’t be fixed relative to the lower level track, and you could freely move regular modules between upper and lower levels for more variety. You could even stack another tunnel module on top to make layouts with three (or more!) levels
You absolutely could!
This channel is quickly becoming my favorite model railroad channel! So often RUclips channels are about the huge builds that fill whole basements but very rarely people are talking about detailed small scale builds. I'm looking forward to more HexTrax! 🙂
I've been hoping you would do this video, just love your trains, thanks for posting 👍😊
I did not know the kato chassis where that cheap. I have some sheets of balsa wood laying around of wich I could also build a fantasy train.
You should go for it!
Great video. I like how you explained the basic steps you needed to create the flat base for each chassis, it will really help new modelers understand and have confidence to try projects. The Kato 109 and 110 are also great drives capable of very small radius, like 2”. Also Tomytec make some great drives, available from Amazon Japan and other online shops.
