The Tabellion
США
Добавлен 12 авг 2013
Hey there, you may know me online as Gravantus.
I am an Orthodox Christian in America with an interest in Orthodox tradition, folklore (especially the oft forgotten folklore of America), and writing.
The Tabellion is my personal project cataloguing all this. In this project, I hope to:
- Explore an ancient faith in a country where it is still relatively unknown
- Revive the American folkloric tradition and look at what it reveals about the American soul
- Publish and share my own writing projects
- As a liberal arts major, examine media through rarely explored lens of literary analysis, such as through an Orthodox or Christian lens of understanding
I greatly appreciate any and all support I receive and you're all in my prayers.

Written in Hell: On the Hell Painted Icons
In a life of Saint Basil, Fool-for-Christ, there is an account of him approaching an icon of the Virgin Mary and hurling a stone at it. Cracking the outer layer of paint, revealed something more sinister...
The "Hell icons" were a legend in Tsarist Russia in which, an image of a devil was painted underneath the image of a saint depicted in an icon. Mass panic spread as people began to hunt down these wicked icons.
But were they real? And if so, could you accidentally pray to the devil?

Why does Constantine have a Beard in Icons?
Просмотров 8 тыс.Месяц назад
Emperor Constantine the Great was a pivotal figure in Christianity's history, legalizing the faith, overseeing the First Ecumenical Council, and converting to the faith himself. As such, you're likely to run into churches named after him and icons depicting him. Yet, despite being the emperor to return to a clean shaven look after centuries of bearded emperors, Constantine himself is depicted a...

Are these purity seals just a new adaptation...

Love the channel. Thank you! 🙏
Thank you!
8:00 really doesn't sound like "orthodoxy" is "one church" when stuff like that happens.
We’re going to be shaving Gravantus
(屮゚Д゚)屮
Bumping this
Emperor Constantine was a military man, so 100% he would have been clean shaven, at least in this period of his life, when he received the message from God: in hoc signo vinces.
Didn't we learn from the heresy of the Donatism (which saw the whole province of Africa succumb to it, and eventually to islam), that even when a priest is secretly a devil worshipper who lives in mortal sin, he still carries the authority of God, to forgive sins etc. I see an analogy here.
We still make gigachad edits today, are we really different from iconographers from hundreds to thousands of years ago?
Where do you get these beautiful icons?
Amazing. Once again it’s Nikons fault.
As a former Protestant (Pentecostal ) I apologize for the ignorance in the comments of any Protestants
Fascinating history. I like the style of your videos.
Glad you enjoy it!
This must be the right channel for an authentic presentation on All Hallows Eve and the original folklore connected to it. Could you possibly make one of these?
I've had a couple of other people suggest that as well, so it's definitely on the list of topics to do!
@@The.Tabellion as soon as you mentioned knowledge of folklore specifically, I jumped at the chance to ask. Suffice to say, present day Halloween seems pretty devoid of it completely.
You do know the Constantine story was Roman propaganda and all evidence points to he still worshipped Saturn and Apollo from all the art work he had made? Jokes on Catholics. 😅😅😅😂
A Mormon making claims about history... Funny 😂😂😂
Excellent video on an incredibly interesting subject. Keep it up fam!
Thank you, will do!
I had the opposite happen at age 16.... some really evil heavy metal art was in icon style ... I was protestant and knew nothing about Orthodoxy.... many years later , I now troll Protestantism and highly respect and endorse Orthodoxy
You troll and are proud of it? I'm outta here.
@andreamobeck200 - you wouldn't understand how my whole existence naturally and inadvertently trolls protestantism ... you weren't around in the 20th century satanic panic vs the televangelist era and then moved to the Calvary Chapel west coast ... every time some other mid aged or boomer Catholic points out how retarded , ignoramus, and tattered my life is.... all I have to retort is "I was born pentecostal during the late 20th century "... then it's awkward because they feel sorry for me and ask if I need money for the buss or Xanax 🤦🏻♂️
Please no trolling, we wouldn't even know of Orthodoxy has we never first been protestants
Old Believers were also imprisoned, exiled, tortured and killed...
I swear any orthodox based video the first hate comments come from either Protestants and sometimes Muslim I find it weird but then you realize both those groups lose many to the truth of orthodoxy it starts to make sense , they’re bitter
Ivan the Terrible pluck out the eyes of the Architecture who design ST Basil, so he couldn't repeat it.
nah its a myth. it never happened
i don't understand. if orthodox belief is that the icon itself is not sacred, but only the image is a reflection of what is being venerated in the persons heart and the material itself "usless wood" then why would it matter that there was a picture hidden underneath? if the person is unaware of this hidden layer of paint, and their heart is towards the saint and God, then saying they are really praying to demons because the piece of wood says so seem to rebel against this church doctrine and enters the realm of superstition. (but i'm not orthodox, so i'm happy to be educated on their beliefs)
All the lines of "what makes sense" especially in regards to religion are "made up" and often the goal post is shifting.
this is answered in the video in 17:30 (ch5). i should have just been patient and listened to the whole video before asking. haha
Very timely video! Thank you for this! It's a good lens to look at the celebrations of Halloween through.😊
There was a 1982 movie with James Earl Jones entitled Bloodtide that, one could argue, used a “Hell Icon” as a MacGuffin.
Quality content!
Thank you!
The fable isn't bad at all , the faithful hear what God says
Wouldn’t it be better to ONLY pray to Jesus?
If you think asking the Saints for their intercessions is wrong then I hope you don't ever ask your loved ones to pray for you.
@@perochialjoe 1. The saints are waiting for the day of judgement bro to be resurrected! They are probably not listening. 2.On the other hand, if you are worried about consistency, I don’t ask my relatives to pray for me. @@joshf2218 idk man, 1.Here’s what Ive understood; I think that they are waiting for the second coming to be resurrected and judged like all other humans. 2. The fact is that there is a thin line between veneration and adoration (the breaking of the command of exodus c:20 v:4 “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:”KJV) 3. There’s the next command as well: “thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;” Exodus 20:5 KJV 4. Imagine you become a saint but you condemned others to hell for venerating and bowing down to you instead of the lord! There would have to be some accountability on your part wouldn’t there? 5. This is what keeps me from getting on board with the veneration of saints! I used to be a pagan; Leaving that tradition behind was hard, but the Bible is very clear on that. Let’s not forget that we are talking about matters of eternal life and death here…
Catechumen here. Just discovered your channel. Can't wait to go through your older videos! God Bless and Glory to God.

Wow. I am surprised at how well you completely misrepresented the Old Believer schism.

These merchants were known as afenyas (афени). Before first railroad, they were messangers and travelling merchants, who sold many things including illegal, old believers iconography and there were instances of scams by Hell writtwn iconography as well. They had their own coded language which became integrated in time with street/thug dialect fenya (феня), after railroad made them without use.
There was a more recent example of something similar, a certain icon producer was mixing orthodoxy with Hinduism in their production.
I always try and steer people away from them when they're looking for icons to purchase.
Monastery icons is what you need to beware of

I love the thumbnail. You thought it was Saint John Maximovich, but it was me Stalin!
"The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not; They have ears, but they hear not; neither is there any breath in their mouths. They that make them are like unto them: so is every one that trusteth in them." - Psalm 135: 15- 18
What are you implying? Quoting a bible passage out of context?
Exodus 25:17-21 “You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold, two and a half cubits long and one and a half cubits wide. You shall make two cherubim of gold, make them of hammered work at the two ends of the mercy seat. Make one cherub at one end and one cherub at the other end; you shall make the cherubim of one piece with the mercy seat at its two ends.read more. The cherubim shall have their wings spread upward, covering the mercy seat with their wings and facing one another; the faces of the cherubim are to be turned toward the mercy seat. You shall put the mercy seat on top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the testimony which I will give to you."
some orthodox undoubtedly idolize their icons. and some protestants idolize their bibles, worshipping words rather than the Living God. anything can be an idol if it takes the place of God. food, sex, money, sports, video games, anything at all
You, as with most protestants, have no clue what idolatry is, because you have no clue what true worship of God is.
@@lancekent1066a verse that is never read by anti-Apostolic Christian communities. They have no clue what idolatry is, unfortunately false shepherds polluted the minds of many well-meaning protestants with false teachings in order to keep them from investigating the true Church. Protestantism has strayed so far from Apostolic Christianity that they have no clue what true Christian worship looks like, which is why they mistake prayer for worship and icons for idols.
This passage is obviously about abortion to anyone who hasn't been brainwashed by the church. It details an abortion process ffs, it even mentions the child dying as a result. What else could it possibly be
Even if it was, it can not be used to justify abortion today as there is no tent tabernacle to do this process using. The Apostles wrote in the Didache that abortion was forbidden for Christians.
I love the video ,the editing,the information etc . I subscribed .

What's the intro song? It sounds familiar...
It's a Russian folk song, До конца, до смертного креста (To the end, to the death cross)
Hell icons have always been a fascinating topic for me. The idea that our prayers might accidentally go to something unholy is silly. A more plausible theory, and a more frightening one, is that the devil deliberately seeded a baseless superstition in the minds of men and fed it until, in their hysteria, they'd go around and destroy perfectly normal icons out of fear they might secretly depict the devil
Sounds like something the devil would do. Just like with the Iconoclasts
I've been told when kissing icons to be careful where I kiss but to not over think it. Veneration is as much more our intention than what we are venerating. If someone venerates an icon of the Hallowing of Hell, the intention isn't to venerate the Evil One or his demons but Christ Rasing Adam, Eve and all the faithful from the Old Testiment Church out of hell. If someone is venerating an icon of One of the Councils they're venerating not the heretic but the Council Fathers and so forth.
@GabrielMichael43 Whoops yeah your right. I guess Autocorrect changed it, and I didn't catch it.
@@thomasewatt I remember one Palm Sunday seeing a mom correcting her daughter when venerating an icon of Christ's entry into Jerusalem: "Don't kiss the donkey!"
Hm it’s almost like God said don’t make graven images for a reason, because it causes confusion. (Ex. 20)
As a Catholic, this has helped put into perspective a lot of what I had already begun to feel about "aliens" as I started back on the journey to find God again after a long stint of Atheism, the feelings of vague "wrongness" i had felt about something and the highly stimulating sensation often accompanying them. One of the most sobering experiences, which helped lead me back on the path to Christ, was to be informed simply of how much I had been lied to about the Church and wider, pre-protestant Christendom's stance on Superstition. Rather than being the "backwards peddlers of magic and wizards in the sky" like i had been lead to believe, the church was always first and foremost the bringer of calm contemplation, mental sobriety and reason. The opposer of Witch hunts and believing in men from the sky. Or how the Devils described as summoned by King Solomon did not make their requirements some esoteric list of crazy rules needed to summon them, but very simple sins. And it truly is terrifying how disarmed Secular Man is to fend off any of these ideas and happenings, as you said near the end. Because why would a demon show up to a layman as a red skinned goat man with a pitch fork and thusly send him running to church when he can either appear as something wholly confusing OR simply use the person's lack of experiences with them to convince him that other genuine demon activities are the kinds of superstitions one becomes subject to in the church? Ave Christus Rex.
God bless, brother
that's well and good but i still want to know what a gravantus or a baten kaitos is
Russian Orthodoxy is basically just 40K between the priests blessing nukes and planes (a broken missile won't fly no matter how many times you baptize it) and this.
