I remember seeing this on live television. It looked very freaky. Now that I see it back I think the guy was both a prophet and suffering from autism. Humanity should cherish artists like Volondat. They're important.

What Volondat says about a teacher is exactly what such a person should be. In my life I had been very lucky to meet someone like that, Frank Mulder, who lives in West-Sussex. He teaches according to The Tradition, just like the old lady who teaches Volondat in this documentary. Frank was one of the few pupils of Benedetti Michelangeli who was one of the few people who knew Le Tradition. That is the way the old masters in the 18th and 19th century played, in technique and interpretation. It is different from what is taught today and better as one, once versed in the knowledge of The Tradition, could develop himself further without the help of others, just like the old guard had to do in times when public transport, motorcars, highways, did not exist.
Whast Volondat says aout an artist must be like a mountain is correct. I knew people who played with David Bowie. They reported that he was surrounded by bad eggs, swindlers, crooks, idiots who tried to tear him down or wanted to profit from him to his cost. But he never caved in, it was like he shedded them like a mountain sheds an avalanche of snowflakes or a tree sheds its sick leaves. It was very elucidating and now I encounter a similar story from Volondat himself. Interesting stuff. It also reminds me of the Japanese film Rashamon, a real masterpiece in this area.

Franco Scala è un visionario, è stato un concertista prima che il panico del pubblico interrompesse la sua carriera. Oltre 35 anni fa ebbe un’idea geniale: offrire ai giovani pianisti la combinazione di grandi difatti e grandi concertisti = Accademia di Imola. Un grande concertista/vincitore di concorsi quasi mai è un grande didatta. Vale anche oggi con le nuove generazioni perché ci vuole abnegazione e spirito di sacrificio per formare i giovani all’Arte del Pianoforte. So (molto) bene di cosa parlo.
