I don't know if this fan was afraid of copyright infringement or what but they could get into just as much trouble for the movie segment as for the music so they may as well have played the real track!

Somebody put the wrong music with this ending track which ruins it. This fan may have good intentions but that is an atrocity and ruins the ending for anyone who has not seen it.

I have a cassette sitting somewhere in a drawer of this radio broadcast. The photo (with Zubin Mehta) is a little misleading; they played it several years later, toured it in Europe and made a recording. But the premiere, as noted, was conducted by Bernstein. I love this piece; it got a lot of play in the ten years or so after its premiere, when a lot orchestras and their principal clarinetists gave it a go. But not likely many did it twice. Larry Combs is one who did, and played it spectacularly (with Solti conducting).

Druckman’s work from this period is a crucial link between “academic serialism” and the “new tonality”. It was amazing to anticipate and hear his works as they premiered in the 80s and 90s. They are coloristic and visionary masterpieces. We owe him a great debt.

After the premiere under Bernstein, Peter G. Davis wrote in the Times, "whether 'Aureole' succeeds in being anything more than a gorgeous bauble of sound is debatable, but perhaps the sheer fascination of its ever-changing luminous surfaces provides all the necessary musical interest." At least for thirteen minutes.

Not long after, this concerto was performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic --- in a concert attended by director Ken Russell, who was in the midst of directing the film Altered States. Russell was so impressed with the work, he contacted John Corigliano and asked him to score the film (which would earn the composer an Oscar nomination).

Very interesting! I loved the score for the film when I first saw it. I thought it was perfect for it. I like the concerto and the first symphony very much, also. I think Corigliano is a fine composer.

@@charlestimberlake5522 I think the first symphony can be attributed to this piece as well- The Chicago Symphony clarinet section was in NYC while this was being recorded and they sat in and put in a request with Solti to have it performed with them. After it was performed on tour, and Solti was asked who should be their first composer in residence, he shrugged his shoulders and said- how about the guy that wrote the clarinet concerto. It was in Chicago that Solti wrote the first symphony.
