I spent many hours/weeks/days/months/years, happily making custom MiniDisc mixes on my trusty Sharp MD-MS702 portable MiniDisc recorder and it's still one of my favorites. I still have many original discs from the late 90s/early 2000s and I've recently rediscovered my love for this retro-futuristic format.
Whether you're new to MiniDiscs or ready to get nostalgic and rediscover your favorite old devices and discs, you'll find out that these devices - though marvels of engineering that have lasted 20+ years - will need some care, maintenance, and/or repair.
I'll pick up old units from Japan or eBay and try to fix them and document them here and on my website, www.technicalinitiative.com .
I hope to provide useful information to at least 1 person a day!

Sony MZ-E10 MiniDisc Player Repair Accessing the Battery via Side Door Only - Let's Figure This Out!
Просмотров 2915 месяцев назад
The Sony MZ-E10 is a technological tour de force from Sony (late 2002) and was the thinnest and lightest portable MDLP-capable MiniDisc player at the time. It's supremely light and thin build was attractive, but it sacrificed everything in the name of size. The remote used a proprietary connector and the main board was susceptible to breaking/bending, causing failures. Most of these today are p...

Thanks for sharing your visits! Have you found any shops in Tokyo that are selling original/recorded MiniDiscs? Thanks!
Nice find!
Great video! You’ve inspired me to check out both some Hard Offs and Second Street on my next trip to Japan ! Don’t think my wife will approve though😅 I only just heard about Second St a few months ago from an NHK documentary!
Thank you! Good luck with the hunting! Remember central Tokyo is pretty much picked clean so if you can find the time, head outwards!
can u do a detail video of how someone can travel to these shops within Tokyo. where to buy cassette deck, laserdisc players, old mini hifi shelf system, sony ES series equipment from 90s
Sure! I should make a video showing how I decide which Hard Off(s) to go to and what tools you can use to get around!
7:00. Yamaha MD8 8-track mixer for (4400 yen) $28 ??!!! Even if the MD wasn’t functioning that’s a steal ….assuming the mixer was operational. This mixer had MIDI and a lot of audio input/output connections
That's a good point and I didn't even think of that! The test bench at most Hard Offs will have some components to plug in and test so could quickly validate if the inputs/outputs are working
@@TechnicalInitiative unfortunately this model does not have a USB input/output yet would serve as a good analog Yamaha mixer and could always attach a functioning MD or Tascam or Zoom SD recorder to record….or ipad with sound interface box
Thank You for sharing another interesting shopping experience 👍 The Sharp unit looked like it was in great condition - a great purchase 😊
Thank you! It was a fun one to see those 3 different resale stores on the same day! That Sharp was a great deal and may show up in a future giveaway!
1$/155yen. Could buy a lot of stuff, especially the portables that can easily have power block replaced vs. rack stereo that would be 100v@50hz
Could also use a good step down convertor! The biggest problem is trying to find space for these!
Love this! And never knew about 2nd street! That Bose looked pretty cool too! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! I never knew about 2nd Street until a few weeks ago when I ran into one by accident in a mall! I'll have to test that Bose in the store one day and see how it sounds
I have that Bose VIA (from around 2003) but both the MD and CD no longer work sadly. It’s incredibly heavy,
@@melvcclee did it ever work? How did it sound?
dolby stereo. interesting. i'm well familiar with dolby noise when it comes to cassette. and of course pro logic, pro logic ii, digital, atmos, vision, etc. but dolby stereo... and as well, i love how finding a boxed console seems to be easy as pie in japan. i would never find a boxed wii here in canada. haven't seen a boxed wii since they were sold in stores.
Yeah I'm feeling quite dumb for saving my PS4 or other old consoles when they can be easily found here. The cost of shipping my stuff from the States is probably more than buying these here...
@@TechnicalInitiative there is something to owning something from new though. you know how you treated it, even though japan seems like THE place where you know they treat their things with care.
@@mark902 I hear you on that - I definitely baby my stuff! There are some well-taken care of items for sure. I've bought many items that were sold as "good, slightly dirty" that looked nearly new! I think some of the really junk stuff that ends up at Hard Off or auctions sites might have made their way through 3rd parties and junk collectors instead of the original owners
I'd seriously go bankrupt if I was there, I have too many hobbies along minidiscs 😂 but it's a nice vicarious romp into Japan's gadget stores.
Me too. I wanna buy them all!
@CBitsTech may we all be able to buy stuff without thinking of our wallet someday 😂
Awesome! 😎
What is it with all the MD players that eat discs? Oh, I like the old mac! Would love to get a mac classic that works. They are super expensive now.
Usually it's just the belt - the unit will take the disc, but since the belt has melted over the years, it can't eject it. And yes, I don't know about the condition, but that Macintosh would have sold well on US eBay...
insert/eject. Not possible to "eat" and MD as it in enclosed and not "tape". Tribute to reliability of the MD is most failures loading faults.
@ Yeah, I should have typed "swallow" to be more accurate as they don't come back out! My current MD player will eject, but only after its turned off/on.
@@23ofSeptember oh man, that sounds hilariously inconvenient! 🤣
Hi. Do you have to pay import taxes on your Japan buys when you get home. Great videos. BTW. Best regards James in Scotland.
Thank you, James! I've only been to Scotland once (Aberdeen), but need to go again! If you can fit a small unit or two in your luggage it's usually not an issue. If you're bringing (and shipping some home) a lot, that could be an issue in terms of duties/customs. For now, I'm staying in Japan and just trying to figure out where I should put this stuff....
Love N1, again congratulations on passing the 1000 subs TI, cheers
Thank you! It really is one of my favorites (I have a lot of favorites, apparently!)
Now that Sony are stopping MD blank production in March 25 I’ve just picked up more on eBay (40 sharp 80min £110) all in to add to my 400 + collection. Thanks for the video TI, cheers
Wow - great deal - I'm quite sure you've got more discs than I do! I'll keep my eye out for deals while I'm over here!
Nice collection of headphones, I use the Sennheiser CX 300 II Buds and JBL TUNE 310C Buds, great for SONY MD. For my Panasonic the JBL C1000SI Bring out the bass better than my other headphones, great video love the black MZ-N10. Cheers TI
Oh thanks for your list, I'll look into those! There's an overwhelming amount of headphones and IEMs out there!
A very nice recorder, even without photography capability. Has a strange curve to the case though, not sure why they did that? Thanks for the video TI. Congrats for crossing the 1k subscriber count. Cheers
Thank you as always! Yes, that's an interesting curve, reminds me of a flask for Scotch!
You lucky guy. What a selection you get to go through un-like here the US its a needle in hay bale to find these being sold other than ebay. I was extremely lucky to find a brand new mz-510 with cat kit new in package for $5 a week ago. LoL.
It is fun, but I have to manage what I can actually fit somewhere! Also, that was a steal of a deal you got!
@TechnicalInitiative The rubber power cabke on the wall charger is coming apart though from being so old. LoL
Congratulations 🎉 bro god bless you keep making video . I hope i win the giveaway
Thank you and good luck!!
Congratulation!!!
Thank you!!
I need to take a trip! 🛫All so amazing!
I'm tellin' you! I always recommend a trip to Japan - it's an eye-opener in so many ways!
thats just mean, showing me all the things that i can't have!
haha sorry! Depending on what it is, shipping can be arranged! LOL
Congratulation to 1K+ sub. milestone, channel is informative and good works on content ..especially those Mr. fix it videos which let MD fan admires more over those tiny little beasts "back to the future"
Thank you! More repair videos coming soon once I get settled down!
I had replaced new gear for my model 701 silver color. but still got ERRORa. also I never hear the minidisc spin inside when testing. also do the same thing for my model 722 and worked.
50% isn't bad! If you don't hear any motor spinning at all, then there's another problem. If the motor is getting power, it could be seized. Sometimes they can be forced to move to loosen them after all these years, or you could open the motor cover and add some lube.
Great trip! None of the stores I visited had that many stereos!!!
Yeah this was a good one, for sure! Once I get more settled, some of those may go from their shelves to my shelves =)
03:05Just curious.. It appears that you can read all the Japanese descriptions on the labels. Is that true ?
Oh no but I've learned some of the common stuff relevant here like working/not-working, "no power", etc. For anything complicated (or hand-written), I'm relying on Google Translate. I still have a lot more Japanese to learn!
Great video, would love to visit Japan!
Thanks! I always tell people that it's worth saving up for. Can really be an eye-opener!
Noticed you added background music. Wonderful 🙂
Is it working out OK? I can't remember who made the suggestion, but I'm happy to add it in the future if it's conflicting with any voiceover
@@TechnicalInitiative Yes it sounds great with the voiceover sounding good. The music makes the video more relaxing and gives an additional positive vibe. Yes do add it in the future. Be well.
@TechnicalInitiative yeah, it's good you added it, though there wasn't at the start (0 to 0:20) but it filled in nicely to kill the dead air 👍
Awesome! 🤩
MD was and still is a great format. Acts like a tape, CD quality, and you can mix the order of tracks in your pocket.
You know it! There's still something great about swapping physical discs to focus on the music you want
I love the MD format. I have the Sony MZ-R35 MD Walkman. Shame the format didn’t take of…
I love the MZ-35! I have a blue MZ-30! It is a shame, but so glad that it's still a usable, viable format today, especially with Web MiniDisc Pro!
Wish you would consider making a video a to z how to build batteries for the NH1 and RH1 including battery selection and 3d printing. It's a big project, but very interesting nonetheless.
You apparently are psychic - I started recording this exact project before I left the states. I have most of it together, but I need to finalize some things. It will be a "work in progress" video where I can hopefully collaborate with some 3D printer owners in the MD community to finalize it, but I believe I have the best battery specs/sizes and have tested prototypes successfully!
@TechnicalInitiative brilliant !!! Other than a couple of online articles and a single video on RUclips reusing an old battery, there isn't much available about these batteries. Thank you! I'll keep an eye on the channel
Small contribution: I opened one of the AliExpress batteries (35usd with shipping) to see how they managed to shove 500mha in it, found a 350 mha battery type LSA 302055 (3 x 20 x 55 mm), which I can't even find on AliExpress, and it seems they used most of the battery space to make it happen, but I think there's a better alternative, using the 402050 (420 and up to 500 mha) if we avoid printing the battery bed layer, means we will have only the edges and battery terminals, the battery will occupy most of the space inside and we can cover the whole thing with thin Kapton tape (shrink sleeve would be better but it may add thickness and make the battery difficult to insert and remove).
@@al-mukhantich Thank you! I've got a great test-fit cell that's working (been using this as my daily driver in an MZ-RH1) with great battery life. Yes, I did away with the stock LIP-4WM charging circuit since these have a charging circuit of their own Will keep you posted!
I'm not entering as I already bought one from you but congrats on your channel growth!
Thank you so much! You're my inspiration! =)
I miss Japan already! especially hard off stores...
I think I got tired of missing Japan and decided to try and move here, LOL
I'd buy all the minidiscs in the basket! I guess you have too many!
With Sony finally ending production, let's get 'em all!
Great MD ❤
I've only ever found one MD (pre-recorded album) at a Book-Off. Was a Boston MD with a cracked case. Clerk was like "You know this is an MD right?" as if to tell me that nobody wants it.
That's really lucky! I'm still hoping to find one "in the wild"!
And how much does a cassette walkman cost?
It really depends on the models - I don't know enough about cassette Walkmans, but there's a few in this video and maybe in one of my new 2025 videos where you can pause and see the price. I think there are some highly coveted models that can go for a lot!
Omg I really can't wait to go back to Japan.
I am sure subs will now go faster 🥰 Hurray for the 1040 😻👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻
Thank you for the support as always!
Nice video, but could you add a bit of low volume background music (i think youtube has free royalty free ones) so the videos don't sound empty when you're not speaking?
Hello! This is the 2nd time I've heard someone commenting about that and I'll definitely figure that out for the next ones! Thank you!
Wow! cool stereos with md !! 😎👌
Awesome! Thank you for sharing ❤💽
Thank You for sharing this MD story with us 👍😊 I was thinking to myself - “I love the look of these”, and then I heard my thoughts on this video 😮 I am definitely looking forward to your next instalment. Take Care, and Happy Hunting!
Thank you for the support! Haha that's too funny - you know what they say about great minds... I wish I could retire and visit them all! =)

Thank you so much! While I'm getting settled in Japan, I don't have all my tools, but some repairs will be happening soon!
Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you!!
Man, those stack units are gorgeous! And, about $2USD for that pack of Bianca blanks? Wow. Pity about that first shop though, can't wait for the next upload!
Agreed! Very tempted to grab that Pioneer one... I'm mapping them out and will try to find a cluster of them to visit soon!
Nice finds! That JA50ES condition was beautiful! Looking forward to more of your visits!
Thanks! It really was a nice one - maybe if the price came down a bit...
