Making machines for mid-scale manufacturing
OHM Ep. 30 - Avoiding Packaging Mistakes
Packaging requires considering what you might need in the future, which is not as easy as you think. You don't want to bottleneck your future products because they won't fit in the packaging, nor do you want to buy all new packaging for every change you make. You'd be surprised by some of the design choices made in the name of packaging.
Did I forget to mention that a horse kicked, bit, and stomped a LumenPnP? You never know what your packaging might go up against.

It's here! The LumenPnP V4 is finally here, and we wanted to share some of our design decisions and explain why we made some of the choices we did. From wants to necessity, it wasn't easy. It took years of feedback, but we couldn't be happier with what has come from all of it. We wouldn't be where we are without the help of our community and the hard work they put into this as well. Thank you! ...

OHM Ep. 4 - Launching the Longmill - ft. Chris from Sienci Labs
Intertingly enough, Prusa's shipping costs are so high, that they have to hide some of the costs into the product. They were smart enough to know that (Americans at least) would be repulsed by a $250 shipping bill. So they hide part of that cost into the product. It's not quite the same as giving free shipping, but it avoids the knee jerk reaction of dismissing buying a product because you know so much of your money is going to me "wasted" on shipping and not the product. For them it works. I thought it was very clever.
27:00 also 3d printers are less sensitive to homing drift, they simply care if you have a bed or not there. So except for the guys at voron I would not expect it to get better / more precise
Really enjoying when you have guests :)
Song?

Some good info in here. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for uploading these to youtube - I probably wouldn’t have discovered it otherwise. Started out with this episode and it was way helpful in my current startup process! 🙏🏻
For small beta testing and such its very good
Just got my v3 today, looking forward for that upgrade kit already.
absolut heplfull, thank you.
I don't have one for my electronics workshop, but I've been following you guys for about 1 year and all I have to say is great work! It sounds like a huge milestone!🎉

The coolest open source project!!!
Which version of OpenPNP and which OS did it run on?
We used our recommended version of OpenPnP, which is located on our docs page (2023-04-05 release). This demo runs a workaround in OpenPnP that allows for concurrent feeding and movement. There's work in a separate fork with the same functionality that has not yet been merged into mainline OpenPnP. The OS was Linux. We specifically use Ubuntu v20.04 LTS
Is this the Lumen v3 or v4? Asking because of the speed (for reference)
When this video was shot, it was done on a V3.1, so you should expect the V4 to be faster.
Why does the camera window say that the component is a 0603 part?
The board that was used is designed for 0603. That board is the one that we include with every LumenPnP sale for testing the machine out after they get it assembled and tuned.
Wish you were from Europe!
We may not be from Europe, but we ship to there!
@@opulo i know! it's just customs...
I saw this is also 300% faster than the LumenPnP V3, that is crazy impressive. I have a feeling there will be a lot of update kits shipping when they are ready! What does it take to borrow some of your engineers for a little while?
Very cool! Wish I had an excuse to get one.
Ha - fun epsoide. Something to add. The "big boys" when they pick a name, they also pick up the URLs for things that might be negative. So for example Verizon, a made up name, also when out and grabbed "verizonsucks.". Uhaul wasn't so savvy, so they are stuck with uhaul-sucks., a site dedicated to how (truly) horrible that company can be. I will say, I suck at spelling, and google is no help with your name. It feels like you guys pronounce it opp-ahhh--low, or opp-ooo-low. Not opp-uuu-low. Cheers.
The Opuflo, clearly. I am good at naming things.

Only two likes?! You deserve another. Thanks for the video how-to's, definitely helpful!
Drinking game - take a drink everytime stephen says "Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo important".
We would be glad to try that out sometime, but I don't think our livers could take it!
i heard that full interview very much the hole time. huge thanks from germany Hannover to you dudes!
I've been a freecad user for many years, and ondsel really improved the ui a lot, never going to any closed cad ever. Using any proprietary sw you do not have full control over is an uncalculateable risk no business should take.
How awesome that they now have the topological naming problem *mostly* resolved, too!
A lot of great info! Thank you
Hello, can we create custom feeders? I want to use a 2D plate with specified locations on it.
It sounds like a tray feeder might do what you need. I would check out this page on the OpenPnP docs for seeing the different feeder options: github.com/openpnp/openpnp/wiki/Setup-and-Calibration_Feeders The main idea for the tray feeder is that you tell it the spacing and how many rows/columns and then it goes from there. I hope this helps!
Those are really excellent, up there with the tooling one - thanks so much and please keep them coming!
good stuff... I'm likely purchasing a LumenPNP in the near future... and of course I ran a deep dive on used PNP machines and new PNP machines. I have 2x 1995 era Juki/Zevatech PM570L machines that can place simple parts pretty fast, but choke on anything strange (no vision, just laser-shadow). On the face of it the LumenPNP isn't amazing, the CPH isn't great compared to what I'm used to, and of course there's wrestling with OpenPNP and arguing with USB ports, camera lighting etc. Hovever of all the PNP manufacturers no-one is as transparent and building a community as much as you are. That value of having docs and having the source code etc etc will really set this apart from a closed source PNP. This is where the value is. It's not necessarily the CPH, but the fact that you can fix and maintain a machine moving forward. That's where the value is.
Putting links to all the tools in the notes would be great! Thnx for all the great info and first hand experience.
Great idea! We updated the notes to include the main ones.
If the cash being held by inventory is an issue and you have a good relationship with your vendor you can spread deliveries, and therefore payments, over time. That way you can still get the discount without the full payment up front. You'll still be out the money over say 3-months, but it's an option if cash flow is tight. Some vendors might prefer it depending on what their own internal capacity is like.
This is the key to make this system useful for my low volume commercial work. My existing system is huge, heavy, complex, and very difficult/expensive to support.
These are awesome, so nice especially if standard assembly services don’t have the parts you want
Could you please develop on which tool/method you personally recommend to use for the solder paste deposition right before that PNP operation ? Do you do it with common solder paste through a stencil with something like a solder paste printer (If so, do I need to first apply the solder paste, heat it, then cool it, so that each footprint have solid solder on them, then position the SMD component with the PNP, then reheat to bind the solder to the components ? Or can I PNP on the solder paste directly ?)
First, solder paste is squeegeed on the board with a stencil. Then it's mounted on the LumenPnP and all the parts are populated into the paste. Lastly, the board is put in a reflow oven where the paste heats up and solidifies, connecting the parts to the board. We have a blog post about the equipment we recommend for the process!: www.opulo.io/blogs/articles/setting-up-a-mid-scale-smt-line
@@opulo Thanks a lot ! 🙏
Almost as fast as me by hand! 😏 But seriously, awesome tech, Stephen & Co. Makes me think we could make a small fortune developing and selling a silent vacuum pump 🤔
Impressive! I remember people saying on the discord that 0402 was difficult with the stock nozzle. Has there been some changes hardware/software wise that have enabled this to be more reliable? 0402 is essential for my use case 😅
Yes, we're always making lots of firmware, configuration, and hardware changes! The v1.0.3 release of the feeder firmware in particular was a tremendous improvement.
I stick to 0603 as the minimum size (if forced past 0805) but great too see the LumenPNP can snatch up those evil little grains of 0402 dust.
Very nice, i am a happy LumenPnP owner, can you provide the vision pipeline used in this demo ?
Yes! For each type of pipeline we have all the most recent settings available on our docs page, easy to copy paste into OpenPnP: docs.opulo.io/openpnp/vision-pipeline-adjustment/1-introduction/
@@opulo Thank you so much !
absolutely amazing, i can’t wait to see what comes of this project in the future!
can it reliably place 0201 or 0.4 mm pitch BGA/QFN?
Max speed ? And acceleration?
I am dreaming of seeing an 0402 demo. Really hoping to sell me big commercial P&P for something small like this, but 0402 is really important.
We just posted one!: ruclips.net/video/uu1659VPKog/видео.htmlsi=f8vaODEqbgiSLI6u
