Buying our WAYFARER Dinghy Boat Ep 1
Loved this video! You're at least a year in front of me, I did my RYA 1 and 2 courses last year and managed to pick up an ex-club rental Wanderer in May at a very reasonable price from Papercourt SC for dinghy cruising, which I'm a novice at. Your observations are really helpful, especially around trailer choices. It's a good thing that I didn't get to the end of Margaret Dye's book "Dinghy Cruising" before today when I learnt about the Gull for ease of launching and landing single-handed - buyer's remorse might follow!
loving your channel, just come across it as I'm teaching my wife and daughter to sail in a freshly purchased wayfarer... be careful how tight you ratchet up those straps they are capable of snapping your boats/...
Aye, maties. Tis the favorite day of all pirates, today be September 19th. The good king has declared this fair day long ago to be Talk Like a Pirate Day. Yea all the scurvy landlubbing knaves will pay proper tribute to the only free men in this world, PIRATES!!! Arrrrrh, and if ye shall encounter any of thems that pay ye no tribute, take their rum rations today and be merry y'are a pirate. I invite ye my limey mates to raise a pint and celebrate aaahrr proper celebration. Cheers!!! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Talk_Like_a_Pirate_Day
Ahoy! Our favourite pirate. Dis year we 'ave been mighty bad pirates 'n even forgot 'twas pirate day. Thanks fer remindin' us. We shall enjoy a rum tonight 'n stir up some trouble… yarr 🏴☠️
Dear Dan and Row, thank you so much for these videos, which we've really enjoyed watching. I know that they must be a huge amount of work, but it would be wonderful to see some more! One way or another, I hope that you had a great summer sailing.
What a lovely comment! Thank you so much! 😊
Been watching your videos as owner of mk1 wayfarer I need to sort to get sailing very useful and informative great couple 😊
Thanks for your lovely message! 😊
A friendly critique: If I see episode 3 of something that I like I'm automatically gonna look for episode 1 or better yet, the playlist. I don't wanna have to struggle looking for it on your YT page. I'd prefer to see it in the recommended videos on the left or worst case, I'd to open up the video's description and find the relevant links there. Sadly that wasn't the case with this video... Anyway, I still love this video and I hope to one day see episode 1 and 2, and if you guys kept it up, episode 4 to 10,000 lol. Cheers.
Well done your teaching me so much, im repairing my first dinghy now, and then im definitely going to be paying for some lessons . As you said so much to take in and technical information required for a balanced and safe boat..thanks for your videos they must take a long time to make , very professional and a good watch .
Thank you for your lovely comment, it’s much appreciated. Enjoy your lessons and adventures to come… ⛵️
Great boat,we sail a gull number 1521 Gunter rig
Such great boats!
Great views out on the water. We got a Sailfish 18 last year. First boat, and never sailed before, but great fun, and new challenges every time. We are at Cramond in Edinburgh, so the first challenge was getting used to being moored in a flowing river. Has been very windy this year, so not keen on going out to sea in conditions that we are not comfortable with.
That sounds fantastic! I bet it’s beautiful where you are, thanks for sharing. It’s certainly a fun and challenging adventure! 😀
I’m looking for a sea worthy boat to sail single handedly. Considered a Feva, Wayfarer and Gull. Which should I choose? Thanks.
We’ve used a Wayfarer on the sea a few times but we don’t have enough experience to answer your question. Good luck choosing!
I had a Wanderer which is a 14 foot Wayfarer and is definitely seaworthy. However as launching on a soft sandy beach it was ultimately (after twenty years) too heavy. That said twenty years with one boat is pretty positive!!
As others have said, the wayfarer is perfect for two. Could I suggest that you get a second Gull and keep it at your pond and race each other a bit of competition will soon sharpen your skills. Use the wayfarer for bigger trips. 5:55
Many thanks for the comment and suggestions! 👍
Easiest way to get water off the cover is lift the bow with the handle of the launch trolley.
Thank you 👌
Btw I love your videos. They are very entertaining and it's smashing watching you learn about sailing. You seen to be loving it as much as I do.
Glad you like them! ⛵️
I'm not sure if this is the right video but... You asked about the aide memoirs for the colours for port and starboard. My mother used to say "No red port left". That gives it all!
Brilliant! Thank you
My dear friends, in your extended absence I have had to find another favorite sailing couple. And, I think if you go to Allison and James Sailing that you will find inspiration in this lovely Canadian couple and their sailing adventure up the coast of British Columbia. They are, sadly, not as piratey, they do make frequent messes but not as much trouble as I would like. Please return to us, your fans, soon. ☠ Yaaahrrr!
Thank you fellow trouble maker! Yaaaarrr!!! 🏴☠️⛵️🏴☠️
So good to see you have proper fun
Once you get more confident with your sailing abilities with the Gull, and maybe want to try salt water, then the Wayfarer will be ideal in that environment. If you ever then fancy cruising , say on the Norfolk Broads or Lake district and may want to fit up a boom tent for overnight, a Wayfarer is more space for that. Also you do go close to the sea on the Norfolk Broads and you may be happier in the Wayfarer. You have a good combination with the Gull and Wayfarer.
Thank you for your comments, we’ve always wanted to go to the Norfolk Broads, that would be an adventure! ⛵️
A Wayfarer is a big boat and can accommodate 4 people, but at 16ft is a heavy boat. Old boats are great and cheap to buy, often cheaper than a trailer. The GP14 is 14 ft, (General Purpose) you can sail alone, row, paddle, sail or even fit a small outboard (Launch and retrieve solo) or with 2 people, it is manageable, has transom flaps to let out water after a capsize once you get moving and when on its side is not too high in the water to get it upright. Similarly the Wanderer is a 14ft version and similar to the Wayfarer, but can be sailed solo , launched and retrieved solo. With the Gull, (I would persevere) fill the front buoyancy compartment with empty plastic bottles and fix the leak. Better to have a small boat you can get out of the water easily than making sailing a workout due to the weight of your boat. Maybe it is possible to fit some transom flaps to the Gull ?
Thank you for taking the time to comment, it’s much appreciated and very helpful! 👍
Guys, where are you ? I've been waiting for the next instalment of Gull shenanigans. Hope all's ok Scott Devon x
Thanks Scott 😎
How has teh Wayfarer sailing been going? Everything figured out? I've had mine for 10 years and still figuring the rigging out - sigh.
I think we’ll be saying the same in 10 years! 🤪
@@DanandRow Honestly! Mine was given to me like a used toy and no instructions. I'd love to find a Wayfarer community to share pictures and questions with to fast-track things. Figuring out the spinnaker for example and I also have some hardware at the base of the mast that I'm not 100% on.
Could you post a video showing how the Highfield Lever works? Nothing on youtube. We could do with a tighter jib halyard on our Heron but not sure how it works. Thanks.
We will do our best. It’s amazing how little there is on RUclips!
We are thinking of buying one and this video is most helpful. We also have a small RUclips channel 👍
Glad it was helpful! 👍
Greetings from Germany! I purchased a wanderer and now my family is experiencing a very similar learning journey as yours. Thanks for sharing your content. Sad, there are no updates currently :)
Hello over in Germany! Thanks for sharing, wishing you a great adventure with the family, it's a lot of fun! ⛵️
Do it have a keel.
No unfortunately not! 😊
Long time no see. I hope you two are well. Please come back soon. I'll be sailing the Gulf Coast for five days and nights starting tomorrow. Yaaahrrr!!! Stay in trouble.
Great to hear from you! Hope your adventure was full of magic and trouble! We hope to be back soon! 😀
Will there be any new videos this year?
That’s the plan! 😀
hi could you tell me the location where you launched from
Hi there, we launched from the Glenridding Sailing Centre. We kept the boat there for a week - highly recommend it! 👌
@@DanandRow do they allow public launching
Not sure? Probably best to check with them direct. Enjoy!
You did great Dan. I'm not sure about your crew though!
🤣
Missing seeing what you two guys are up to. I really do hope you've not changed your minds and have given up on your channel?
What a lovely message, thank you! We have not given up - we will be back 😎
hello just a few tios to help you on your sailing career. Firstog all your kicker is upsidown the cleat should be at the botton for more purchase. secondlywhen you pull in your mianshet you take it to you knee where the tiller is. that is fine but try use both hands. I am not sure if your tiller extention is long enough for this but is is worth a try. Finaly i would look at phills watersports for more tips on sailing it is a great cheannel keep up the good work.❤❤
Thanks for the tips, it is much appreciated 👍
Just got mine a few weeks ago. Same colour. I actually went to Ullswater last week and had 3 days sailing, perfect. Going back to do my level 2. Hoping to see more from you two? Would be good to share our adventures too.
Fantastic!! We loved Ullswater and can’t wait to go back. Enjoy your new dinghy and thanks for sharing your adventures too. ⛵️
You guys are great we bought as a dingy this spring just now we refitting it an splash it 20 maj thanks for your inspiring videos greats from east sveden❤
Thanks for the comment, glad to hear you are enjoying the videos! Sounds like you have a fun dingy project underway - enjoy! 😎
One thing i would add is to have an objective everytime you go out to improve your skill set, maybe sailing around a course, up to a bouy, man overboard etc. fair winds aye!
That is a great point, thank you for sharing it! 👌
Hi I live in Thailand and am in the process of renovating a Wayfarer. Like you I have no idea how to rig the bitch and yes I have named it the *Bitch.* Could you do another video slowly rigging the boom, kicking strap etc.. Or come to Thailand and play with my boat.
For your tpe of boat a highfield lever is crutial however newer boats like rs200 do not use theese insted the use a clam cleat and 4 to 1 cascade purchase
Thank you for the comment, that's good to know. 👍
A bow of glassfiber wich they use in smal tentut it under the cover and the rain slides of the tent. Sorry for my english ( mistakes) Theo from holland
Thanks for the idea Theo! Your English is excellent, we admire anyone that can write in a language that is not their first!
The Gull you have is a great boat, although not a new one, she is an earlier version than mine, which was built 1976. Consequently, she's going to need a bit of maintenance, which will make a world of difference to the way she sails and to your enjoyment of her. Learn how to do the work on her yourself and you'll probably start to enjoy working on her as well as sailing her. - One good thing about an older boat is you can work and maintain them more easily. Like the sound of the plans you have for the channel. I think you're thinking along the right lines. Regards to the two of you, David.
Yes, we have some maintenance plans for the near future, and, like you said, to do it ourselves! 👌🏻
Hi Dan and Roe. I like your sailing videos, both the Wayfarer and the Gull, particularly the Gull as late in the season last year I became the owner of a Gull too, albeit a slightly different version to yours. Like yourselves, I'm fairly new to sailing, so have much to learn, you two sharing your experiences and asking for comments on others similar experiences is a great way for us all to learn. I'm sorry to hear that your channel has taken a bit of a hit in popularity, it certainly hasn't done so with myself. It did surprise me to hear Dan say about the numbers dropping off. The other weekend, where I sail and keep my boat (Mudieford Quay, Christchurch), I was chatting to someone in the dinghy park, and when I mentioned I sailed a Gull, that told me how they had been watching your channel. Not an isolated incident, over the months I've had a few people say they have watched some of your videos. - I always tell them to, like the videos, subscribe to see more, post a comment even if it's just to say 'Hi', as all these things help with the RUclips algorithm. What would I personally like to see more of, the sailing and boat related things. Liked the one about how you rigged your boat, also when you took your Gull to the sailing school. I think there's so many more along those lines you could do, for example, you've got a slight problem with water entering your front buoyancy tank, perhaps lets see how you're going to find the leak, then lets see how you fix it, what products you use and so on. Regards to you both, and don't give up on the channel. David.
Thank you David! Your comment was such an uplift to read, we really appreciate you taking the time to write it and many thanks for sharing our channel with fellow sailors, that's great! 👍⛵️
Thanks for making this video. Yes, it was very helpful as I've recently bought a Gull, and have been given all the bits but have to figure how they all go. One thing, and I don't mean to be horrible, as you are doing you're best to be helpful, but havent you put the hawk the wrong way round??
Well spotted! 😊 We realised later on and changed it round! Enjoy your new Gull, we love ours. ⛵️
Grip the rivet slightly further up the shank, this will allow you to get a better grip on the rivet gun and close the handles up a bit to start the rivet, then carry on as normal with the gun to pull the rivet through. There's nothing wrong with that rivet gun, you're just not doing it very well. Hope this helps for next time as I'm about 3 months too late with this information. 👍
Thanks for the tip! 👍
Weird comment but....I sailed a lot as a teenager and now as a 40 something I want to get my kids out out on the water and have been looking at Wayfarers so can get 4 people cruising. Was worried I had forgotten a lot but watching this video and some other has actually made me realise I'm probably ok :)
That’s great! It will probably all come back to you very quickly. Enjoy! 😊
I love watching you learning, you are a great couple. May I offer some advice, when you are gybing, pull the main sheet in a few hand fulls and you just have to practice swapping sides.. If you do the same in higher winds, you will capsize. Although your boat is quite stable. My laser will 100% throw you out in such manoeuvres if you dont be more aware. But take in a few handfulls of sheet and take a firmer grip on it, it will really snap over in higher winds.
Thanks for the lovely words and for the advise which makes a lot of sense! It is always good to hear from the experienced folk! ⛵️
Enjoy watching you guys. I am upgrading from my Laser as i aam looking for something more sailing than diving...! Its a huge learning curve and your videos are so helpful and encouraging.
Thank you for your positive and encouraging comment! 👍
The biggest recommendations for layers is make sure you have the right blocks that are not to big and the right cleats you only realy need a decent boat to do well
Hello guys, great to observe the documented progress of your dinghy sailing adventures. It can feel like a steep learning curve initially but that's all part of the fun and you're looking good. I am a very happy Gull owner (#2795 Porters built) recently moved to Devon. I look forward to the new seasons episodes and please let me know if you're down this way (River dart). Cheers !
Great to hear from a fellow Gull owner and thanks for the encouraging message! Look forward to seeing you in Devon! 👍
A 14’ would be ideal, plenty of gp14s around.
Thank you, we have a friend at the club with one so we are hoping to try it out soon!
As a beginner, I think of racing as just a day of supervised sailing. Lots of other folks around and safety boats. Keep it fun and slow and don't worry about it.
Perfectly put 👌
