    When I pet my cat gently, he bites me hard and runs away

    • @KittyHelpDesk
      @KittyHelpDesk 18 часов назад

      This isn't enough info for me to do a deep dive into it, but in many cases, this kind of response is due to the cat being inadvertently reinforced for the same behavior in the past. For example, if they're played with using hands like toys. It can also happen if a cat becomes overstimulated. I recommend asking each cat if they'd like to be petted by offering them the knuckles of a closed hand. If they approach and make contact, pet them. If they stay where they are or look away, don't pet them.

    The problem with the 10 hour loop on RUclips is that RUclips prompts my screen with “r u still watching?” Click to resume. So basically my tv goes into “sleep mode” and once again my cat is without his entertainment. His name is jojo and he over groomed his rear back side and it shows because he’s a white cat lol. I love him so dearly I’m going to try to find something for him to enjoy watching. I think this may work. Thank you so very much you seem like such a genuine person. Subd

    Thank you for this info! I've been researching "hypoallergenic" cats. One video I watched said that Russian Blues might produce less of the Fel D 1. I'd love to find out if that's true... Although, like you said, some individual cats may have less of it too. ...On goes my search for the most allergy-friendly cat for our household!!! 🤞😻 PS - I really like the blue walls in the room around you, in this video! :-D

    Could you please help me, i just got a 2month old kitten at fist he was afraid of me but now he really grew attach in just one night, but the problem is he won't stop meowing like he meow all the time unless hi is a sleep or i pet him,, even i sleep next to him he keeps meowing unless i touch him, but the main problem is i had to leave him a home alone for around 7hrs daily

    • @KittyHelpDesk
      @KittyHelpDesk 8 дней назад

      Most of the advice I'd give you about the meowing is in the video. As to leaving the kitten alone during the day, I recommend playing some music for them while you're out. Cats respond very well to soft harp music like this: ruclips.net/video/dCvEgqePl84/видео.html. I also recommend investing in some activities for your kitten to do while you're out. Toys that dispense treats can be helpful. I especially like training a cat to play hide and seek. Hunting feeders may help them to engage in seeking behaviors. I recommend that you put high-value treats in them and hide them in different places each day for the cat to find. It may take them some time to understand the game, so start with the feeders in plain sight and gradually make the hiding spots more difficult. I really like the Doc and Phoebe indoor hunting feeders. The instructions state to use these for meals, but I prefer using them for seeking as described above. www.chewy.com/doc-phoebes-cat-co-indoor-hunting-cat/dp/179101 Try to relax and enjoy your new friendship!

    I had 3 cats a year and a half ago - a 20-year-old and two 4-year-olds. The two younger ones were about 4 months apart in age and seemed quite close for the first couple of years but when our living space doubled, the older young cat, Gracie, distanced herself from the other one. It took several months of hissing to get her point across and then I ended up with two somewhat unhappy cats. The youngest, Lexie, was a velcro cat who didn't like to be alone and Gracie was much more independent and wanted her own space. Lexie didn't get enough attention because the other 2 cats weren't interested and I couldn't spend all my time with her while Gracie didn't get enough attention because every time she came for it, Lexie came, too, so Gracie would leave. I was trying to figure out how to resolve this when Lexie suddenly died. It was awful for me but the old cat wasn't affected and Gracie blossomed. Since the old cat, Tails, mostly ignored her, they coexisted quite peacefully with Gracie occasionally grooming Tails and never challenging her. Tails died about 3 months ago and Gracie's behaviour changed again but less dramatically. Mainly, she expanded into the spaces that Tails usually occupied, like sleeping in the bed every night and in the prime spot. I've been watching her for the last 3 months and from what I can see, she seems to be doing well without another cat around. I think this is partly personality and partly because she has my undivided attention now that the sick cat and the velcro cat are gone. I play with her more and leash trained her in order to add variety to her life (and mine). She gets the amount of attention she wants and I don't force attention on her when she doesn't want it. She'd probably be fine if she never lived with another cat again but I miss having a snuggly, cuddly cat. I think my best bet if I eventually decide to add another cat to the household is to foster. That way I can find a cat that suits both Gracie and me. And if fostering ends up causing issues for Gracie, I can stop.

    • @KittyHelpDesk
      @KittyHelpDesk 12 дней назад

      Please take care of yourself. Give yourself and Gracie the time you need to adapt to the loss of the other cats. I recommend taking at least a year before considering another cat, but YMMV. The scenario you've experienced is a common one. Most cats thrive as solitary animals, but some of them can learn to cohabitate successfully with others given enough time and slow introductions.

    I adopted an 8 year old, all white, long haired, blue eyed cat. The biggest lover I ever had (and I’ve had many cats). I was worried that he might be deaf but he seems to respond to sounds. Most notably the difference between “treats”, “food”, and “snuggles”. He also had the weakest meow I’ve ever experienced in a cat which has been getting slightly stronger over the years. I Had attributed it to him noticing the attention my Siamese gets when she talks (loudly!). Am I delusional and he’s just so alert that he can pick up the vocal vibrations? Not that it matters. He’s so loving and laid back that my husband calls him “narco-kitty” cuz he’s like a drug. Instant stress relief as soon as he finds your lap😅

    Interesting video. Good information. All five previous cats were single. Never had any issues. I got my first cat when I was a child. She lived 16 years. It was five years before I got another. Since then, we have always gotten another cat right away. One just showed up after Sabrina died. When our next cat had to be euthanized (she had cancer throughout her lower jaw), someone had left a litter of kittens at the vet's office. So my daughter brought one home. Now, I have two sisters. And they act like it! LOL

    Thank you for this great review! I have a 20 lbs. dog and currently we have a small pedal trash outside for his waste. You could put a bag on, but it would be a massive pain. The area we keep it is a covered patio so rain doesn’t get in. I was looking for something like the diaper genie I used for my kids to make throwing it away easier AND to help keep flies away. The garbage we use now only holds 1.5 gallons MAX, it’s 10” high and 7” wide so much smaller than all of the pet genies. I know everyone things dog waste is wet, but not really. Esp if you don’t scoop the moment they go, which I don’t unless in a public place :) Ok sorry for the long background. It seems like the easy roll would work well for us. What do you think?

    What about Siamese cats, do they have particular traits other than being talkative?

    • @KittyHelpDesk
      @KittyHelpDesk 18 дней назад

      A lot of traits have been attributed to Siamese cats over the years. Many consider them to be more interactive and intelligent than other "breeds." However, they have personality variations just like other cats and many other cats have the same traits as well. The behavioral differences that do occur between Siamese and other types of cat are usually the result of active breeding by humans - the same reason we have so many different types of dogs. That active breeding could actually produce a very specific set of traits except for the fact that breeding partners are not chosen for their behavioral traits but instead for their appearance. Unlike dogs, cats have never been successfully bred for specific behaviors. That's why Siamese cats from different breeders could actually have very different sets of behavioral traits. The talkative nature of Siamese cats could actually be the result of the belief that they're more talkative. Cats don't generally "meow" to one another as adults. They learn to do so in our homes because we humans respond to these sounds in favorable ways. It's possible that we've come to expect Siamese cats to be talky, so we talk to them more and actually end up soliciting the behavior. Add to this the fact that their voices tend to be somewhat piercing and you end up with this idea that they're more talky than other cats. TBH, Miss Lucy is the talkiest cat I've ever met.

      You may prefer a heated enclosure. There are lots of those available. you coulc also add a cat-safe heating pad. Straw is often the best thing to use if you can't tend to the enclosure often. It's most likely to remain warm and dry.

    My 12-year-old cat has been engaging in overgrooming for about six months. It started when we had a flea problem. She's highly allergic to flea bites. She started pulling her fur out and overgrooming. Once we got rid of the fleas, her overgrooming got better, but she's still doing it. The vet sees no physical reason (no ticks or fleas or illnesses). She has two companion cats that have been here as long as she has; one of them is her litter mate. They don't do the overgrooming. She has lots of windows and loves watching the birdies and deer. She's not too interested in playing with toys, although she'll occasionally play with her brother and sister. Any thoughts on what I might do to help her stop overgrooming?

    • @KittyHelpDesk
      @KittyHelpDesk 21 день назад

      I can't really tell if this is behavioral or physical. Only a vet who has direct access to your cat can do that. It might be a good idea to get a second opinion from another vet. Just don't let them railroad you into meds. The rest of my advice is in the video.

The other I got from a shelter and I never have heard him make a sound apart from one or two small tiny chirps in the 6 years he has lived with us. However, he loves tummy rubs (can't get enough) and brushing and sleeps with me every night. I just hope he is happy in his new home.

    Some people don't realize cats can learn things just as fast as dogs. Our cat knows, "Get down." Of course, he keeps going up, but has learned to get down when asked. We also tell him he is a good boy when he does it. He does a lot of watching me cook from on top of our fridge, which is okay with me. Mommy's little helper. I had to laugh at your suggestion of "just ignore it." I used to play dead for over an hour every morning with my last cat because he wanted to eat. I simply got walked on and meowed at for an hour! ha ha. Another great video, Tom. Thank you.

      Thanks for watching! While it can take time, ignoring an unwanted behavior will work. The issue is that there will be an extinction burst wherein the cat's behavior will ramp up before it goes away. This often makes people think that their efforts are not working, but they are.

    I have a desexed male cat that's very territorial. and a desexed female cat thats shy. they're half sibling's ( same mother, different litter, 2 years apart) They have always been uncomfortable when they cross paths in hallways etc. But im more concern that when he goes outside he's sniffing heavily like a dog sniffing on a hunt. I tend to keep the cats inside at night to keep them safe from fights. But my male cat doesnt like to go to toilet in the litter boxes inside and wants to go outside. This worries me as he had a block bladder last year and it cant be good for him to be choosing to hold his pee til he goes outside. My Vet has recommended this brand of spray. but i dont know how that'll help him with being territorial and wanting to pee outside at night.

    I have a Maine Coon cat named Grayson. He’s about a year old, and we trained him to wear a harness and leash, so goes for walks, but we have never let him roam outside alone

    KEEP YOUR CATS INSIDE! If you dont care that at any time the cat will be gone then by all means let it out. If you let it out trust me the cat will be gone at some point. I know. Many outdoor cats gone. Miss terribly.

    I've had indoor cats and outdoor cats. I noticed that the outdoor cats were much more active and playful and well, just more cat like. The indoor cats I've had were mostly lethargic and just seemed bored all the time. Your right about longevity though, a couple got hit by cars. My ex has a cat that used to love to run around the neighborhood all night but as he got older only wants to stay indoors. It also depends on the cat and if they want the stimulus and excitement.

      You have to work to provide stimulation for indoor-only cats, but I find it fun and completely worth the effort.

    i've always had a few windows my cat could sit at and chirp at the birds. sometimes in the winter I'd hold the door a crack for her to get a sniff of the twenty degree air and that would curtail her desire to escape. I had a cat I took in and it was very grateful but it still drove me crazy to go outside routinely. You're right there are people who will hurt cats, I work with some. Also nowadays there are a lot of poisons used, weedkillers ect. on lawns .

    Our bengle escaped one day when she was little, that was it, we had to let her out because she would never shut up meowing at the the door, started with leash on in garden spiked to floor and walks on leash, she escaped a lot, but always came back, then one day got hit by a car 😢 rip

    I bought a catit for my kitty but didn't know about the aluminum top. Is there anything I can do to keep the plastic drinking area clean since I've already bought it and she has used it? Thanks for the information on drinking fountains for cats.

      Having a fountain with a plastic top is better than no fountain at all. The plastic can just harbor bacteria in ways the stainless steel top won't. You want to be careful not to use abrasives or chemicals on the plastic one. Just some vinegar that you rinse away very well.

    we got a portable mesh tent and tunnel set for our cats to go outside, since we are renters and can’t have a permanent catio. they love being out and it saves me a lot of time following them around on a harness and leash

      That's great! I will say that I enjoy watching them explore on harness but it does take time.

    Catios are another option for indoor cats.

      That's true! Even a small space that gives cats access to the sounds and smells of the outdoors can be helpful.

    I live in an apartment in a city that has bylaws stating that you have to keep your cat in your yard when unleashed, just like with dogs. Aside from those rules, there are just too many cars, dogs, mean people, and other predators around for me to let my cat (or dog) outside without me, so I take my cat out on a harness and leash. We just started doing this a few months ago and she likes to explore the area near my patio. She rarely goes more than 30 feet away and immediately runs back to the door when she gets scared. She seems happy just hanging out nearby for now but she might eventually get more adventurous and want to go further. She hates cat backpacks (too small), so I bought a pet stroller for longer walks since it's much more spacious. I leave it in my living room and she sleeps in it sometimes. I figure if we explore further from the apartment, I can put her in it when she's scared or I see a dog (or goose 😂) coming. My only real worries now are losing her if she slips out the door or gets out of her halter. But I feel they're risks worth taking so that she can get some outdoor enrichment in good weather.

      The cat backpacks you mention are really awful. I can't imagine any cat enjoying that. Glad to hear you've found a workable solution for your cat!

    Good video. "Trigger" was Roy Rogers' horse. We live in the suburb of a large city. In addition to stray and neighborhood cats, there are skunks, possums, owls and even coyotes at times. My house is full of cat toys and kids' toys. There are perches by every window. Having two cats helps. They will be staying inside for now.

    Cats are FAR more intelligent than we give them credit for. They seem to be more self aware than I ever thought possible.
