@@jjlad5037 makes sense. I have seen it with second-hand dealers as well. If a watch sits in inventory for a while they discount more and more, probably take a loss on a few just to get cash to move into something they can make money on without waiting 6+ months to get a query about.

Yeah they sell to the same audience who like microbrands and they do a lot of community outreach so people think they are a micro. I would say no for two reasons. One, I think they sell way too many watches for the category. I saw a WatchPro article from 2020 that said back in 2018 they sold over 22,000 watches. That is a lot. Plus I believe significant ownership control is now in the hands of Bgf Gp Limited so it isn't just a person or group of friends (anymore at least).

The value proposition is always a factor. I have bought used watches for more from dealers with warranties because I value the guarantee more than the bottom-dollar price (had to use some of those warranties too).

I have had more compliments on my Ricochet than any watch I have ever owned. Granted, I went to a pinball convention with it on so I sort of cheated but it still counts!

I bought a Chinese tourbillon 3 years ago and the quality is very high. It's a beautiful watch and keeps the perfect time. The appearance is as new as unboxing even after a lot of wearing it. Not a scratch on it anywhere.

I think they realize they are not Patek or AP and this is hurting them long-term hence why they are expanding production. But the big changes are still years out. How much more tarnished will they be between now and then?

@@WatcheswithDennis yessssssssss it's a pipe dream and who's walking about with a 50k watch at least on their wrists in UK especially London and Newyork. Only wealthy people and they usually have security personnel and usually live in Monaco or Dubai. 🤯🤑🧐

Plus selling is a pain in general (photos, packaging, shipping insurance, etc.) but if they aren't getting worn I just feel like they are wasting space with me.

Buy secondhand from trusted sellers and that isn’t a factor. The “value retention” crowd are invariably hype watch collectors justifying their boring watch purchases.

Thanks for the correction, I KNEW I should have looked up a video to hear someone say it but I thought "nah, 'Nth` sounds cool and I don't see periods so how could I be wrong?" and thus just walked face-first into wrongness. The homage thing is something I saw several people accuse them of being on Watch Crunch though, so there was that sentiment. Probably a misuse of the term. Generic-looking divers is probably more accurate.

I believe the dive watch has, for quite a while, been the most popular configuration amongst collectors. I would not be surprised to see they are declining in general but I would reckon almost everything is. Or do you believe that the dive watch is losing ground to a different, ascendant watch (like the GMT watch)?

It doesn't seem to happen often but deliberating devaluing one's watches can have some serious, long-term impacts. I wish I knew of a good article on Richemont's action but it was so long ago and online watch media wasn't really a thing that far back. It comes up sometimes on discussion forums (which has to be my source as I wasn't collecting back then and didn't know there was a Richemont group). But making people feel like a sucker for paying more than the new MSRP can cause a huge hit to the prestige of the company. Because with watches, regardless of price tier, there is this pecking order where there is almost always something cheaper than you and something more expensive. We see companies trying to move up that ladder with artificially driven MSRP increases, but going down the latter projects that you see your competition as being "lower" than what you were previously claiming. It just sits wrong with folks.

@Steffen-dg4kr I mention on my show that Invicta collectors are in a realm of their own. Until a collector is ready to dive into another brand, Invicta is it and he or she will die on that hill!

New to watches? Welcome to the hobby; it can be a bit overwhelming with all the options but hope you enjoy! Regarding Monta, it has come up on occasion but not extensively (I've never owned one nor seen a model that really got me looking closely). One of the more famous microbrands and I assume you are familiar with them as they are based in St. Louis. I can't say I've really heard any negative reactions but given most of their models revolve around the $2,000 price-point they are positioned higher than a lot of other microbrands so, as one might expect, the quality concerns that plague the cheaper brands aren't as commonplace for Monta. While I don't feel strongly about any of their designs personally if I were to pick a favorite it'd be their Skyquest line; I think it is an attractive and quite legible GMT watch.

You bring up a good point I did not consider. I am not really sure how interchangeable the personnel are but if they are in the same area it indeed might be relatively easy for them to do.

I have 11 watches in the rotation and looking for a 12th - The reason I want it is because of the oddball design that is unlike anything I own. A little overpriced in my opinion but likely an OK deal from an unauthorized channel.

I often get the same feeling that CW sort of glues ideas from different watches together to make their designs. I did not highlight here since the Trident line already existed so this is just a twist on their existing models (which do have elements that seem familiar from several microbrands I would agree).
