What do you think is the future of remote work? I have tasted it while and after coving and really like it.
Personally don't fault it. I think it's great and gives a lot of opportunities and broadens the reach of talents. But then, I have had to be at the office on a big NDA show and it was great being back at the office. The dynamics are so different and was pleasant being back in. Nonetheless, I think remote work should remain and be an option for people to chose, or as it's commonly happening, a hybrid method, with some days at the office.
@@TheVFXArtistsPodcast in my case, I'm a russian currently located in Spain, it's the only option. Fingers crossed.
@dennistsoi9404 absolutely! I’m sure it will continue to be allowed. You’ll be fine I’m sure!
This is a really good point. If you have the choice of hiring someone in Asia or South America where 50% of the North American or European salary would be an amazing opportunity, why would employers hire local. I bet yah AI and AI tools are also going to cut in to this industry!
Blacklisting is highly illegal. So you theoretically shouldn't be worried. That said we all know that blacklisting exists nonetheless and it's awful. Good move speaking out about it. The less of these crummy studios are around, the better. We all know they pocket whatever flimsy profits or fake insurance claims they make and move on to their next grift.
Thanks for having me on the show! For anyone wanting simplified context of the events I described I will include the main bullet points below. It is worth noting that an issue such as this is simple to one extent but can become convoluted when discussing intricacies of what occurred without adding vast amounts of details. The base information is simply I did not receive half of my fee. - Nov 29th: Sign the contract which specifies only my name in regards to the fee with 50% paid upfront and 50% when my files are delivered. - Dec 5th: An IXOR staff member states he will help on the project. Other IXOR artists had already posted work and comments in the slack channels. (No discussions regarding contracts or pay). - Dec 6th: Two IXOR artists specify they will do the work for one section and I am told to focus on the other areas of the animation. (No discussion of pay or contracts). - Dec 10th: The boss requests I focus on an even more specific section. (No discussion of pay or contracts). - Dec 23rd: I deliver image sequence renders, final comp renders (including compositing another artists work into mine), 3d files, compositing scripts and all work completed for the project which is far beyond the scope of what was initially requested. My invoice 02 is sent to them with the file download links I provided. - Jan 8th: After sending a follow up email their finance manager states they used 50% of my fee to pay the other artists working on the project. - Jan 8th - Jan 29th: I continued email communication and at one point the boss stated a video call could be arranged to discuss the payment but they did not respond to follow up emails or the eventual video call I attempted to arrange. - Feb 14th: This story was briefly summarised on a LinkedIn in a post. - Feb 16th - 19th: Some brief correspondence begins with the legal owner and project supervisor but no resolution occurs. Hopefully by raising this topic for discussion other artists can prevent this form happening to themselves in future.
Ooo🙄
Nice one. Hopefully see you back at ssvfx sooner rather than later.
Thanks mate. Hopefully so🤞🏽
Ron, please make shake open source.
Legendary.
Nice interview..
Matt the god of matchmoving! He is so energetic! His old demo reel early 2000s was inspirational. Great to hear his stories. Newtek Video Toaster with Lightwave was a dream system I could not afford back in the days. I started Amiga and Atari around 1989. I feel old haha. Boujou was like 9k usd! I love Syntheyes and still use it today. Super fast and efficient (ugly interface tho ahah) .... :) Did you guys interview Russ Andersson? Before Syntheyes, he made a matchmove plugin for 3dsmax Scene Genie. Genius. Great that you guys feature the unsung heros in VFX. Interview roto artists! Anamorphic and distorted lenses. Looks cool but a nightmare to track :)
Awesome interview!
Awesome! I read his book multiple times, I called it the "Bible" for compositors. Still a good read today. I remember the command line version of Nothing Real Shake before it had a GUI. Shake GUI and their user manual is very similar to the book. I guess that would be Ron's template for his book. Attended Siggraph 2000 and met some people at the first Shake user's group in New Orleans. Big fan here. Good times until Apple bought the company ( and Silicon Grail "Chalice" and "Rays") and discontinued both :( Ron is a legend! Your mic volume is too low.
I wonder what is your view for both of you guys about IA now that it has evolved a lot since one year? Is there some people already working on it in Science-D-Visions for 3DEqualizer?
Thank sensei!!
I worked with Ron at Sony many moons ago. He is incredibly creative, brilliant and a real good Man.
What is the future of matchmove jobs in VFX after ai ?
I am glad I found this podcast.
Amazing. Really like the content of this channel but you guys could use a better mic
Sorry about that one, it was more of a setup thing on my part as I have a good quality mic. Sorry I dropped the ball on this one! Daniel
Great interview. Never considered the AI hiring problems he's referring to around 30:00. Love his AI art hub idea--let them post in their own sandbox.
Thanks for this guys. Ron's book was my gateway to compositing way back in 2001. Took me years to more aptly comprehend but without it I'd be lost.
It was a massive help to me as well. That's why I was so excited when Ron agreed to come on the show!
@@TheVFXArtistsPodcast love it. Keep up the interviews! They have really been enjoyable
This is amazing. Thank you
Very Nice <3
Amazing to hear from Ron after all these years. I still refer to Art and Science every now and again. Thanks Danny and Ron.
Glad you enjoyed it! Seen you're doing some sterling work Andy!

@@TheVFXArtistsPodcast you guys are incredible for making it free
Great pod guys!
Thanks @Johannes!
Quick question: when you are freelancing for studio, are u contracted based on projects or based on time frame?
At the studio where I work and where I've worked in the past we always contract based on duration although we normally crew up based on projects coming in. Still even if we have a project in mind it's not impossible that the freelancer may be moved to something else especially if one project is slow with turnover and/or feedback and another is more in need. Sure Shonda @postseries will have her own experience as a freelancer too (check out her channel and Linkedin as she does frequent Q&As)
Thankyou for the podcast. Really loved it !
Glad you did! You’re most welcome!
Thanks Mike. Some excellent points backed with some great anecdotes.
Well, in the logic that AI is doing what human mind do, taking references to come up with image that is respectfully being ''inspire'' from to produce a new one, mean that if I'm asking to a artist to make me a picture ... as I've asked it I can claim as my art then? that's the way I see poeple ''producting'' visuals and claim theirs and making money from it (using AI). I'm not up for that idea at all then or did I missed a point? And I personnally think: yes! the making of a art piece is an important part of the process to me, I'm sorry to say that I do not accept the idea that just be able to type ''good'' key words to create something makes you a artist and give you right to benefit from this ''art''... I do understand that it's difficult everybody being paid if their art is used by AI but I still believe that just go for '' it is what is it'' and give it up is unacceptable. and finally, I think, platforms making money exist BECAUSE of the content creator not the other way around and so the content is not to other than artists or creators to decide if they accept that their things are used by other or not
I'm inclined to agree with you on this one, our previous guest Alvaro made a similar case to yours and unfortunately that episode wasn't released when I recorded the interview with Mike. It would be great to hear how they develop their positions after hearing each other's arguments. Daniel
And I also raised the question with another guest which we will be releasing soon where we discuss this issue further so stay tuned! Daniel
@@TheVFXArtistsPodcast can't wait to see that :D
That part about criticism and social media was such a good point. Its an interesting psychological phenomena that we take positive feedback with a grain of salt but we amplify negative feedback a ton.
Very much is. I guess it’s part of human nature, but it’s worth being aware of it in order to counter and manage our response to it. Glad you enjoyed this episode. Thanks for your feedback.
Great interview! Definitely some things I was *not* expecting to here, what a fascinating journey.
It's certainly a ride!
Can you please make a podcast about file management for vfx artist
Are you able to elaborate more? Thanks.
@@TheVFXArtistsPodcast for example when sending it to a render farm. Thanks
I think it would be cool to dove deep into the back end of the vfx pipeline. In most facilities this is taken care of and the artist just has to ensure all the files they use are on the server and not on their local machine. If it's a cloud based service then it's all about relative paths and within the folder structure you upload.
To add to this most facilities with use a publish database system such as Shotgrid or FTrack to manage their assets. Anyway we will have a look into booking a guest who can dove a bit deeper into this aspect.
@@TheVFXArtistsPodcast thanks for the clarification
lmao All the work is done by the 1000 background artists .... meanwhile all the glory goes to Actors/actresses
Unfortunately that’s what tends to happen. We need better representation for artists. Or take actions into our hands.
Great to see someone talk about matchmove here! I'm a matchmove artist and work on hollywood projects with 3dequalizer but I would love to learn Syntheyes. Hope to see more on matchmove in the future!
Glad you found this interesting!! We have other matchmove episodes within our matchmove and layout playlist. One especially with Rolf, creator of 3DEqualizer, if you’ve not already seen it. Thanks brother!
Where did you learn , pls guide me.

What an interview. I absolutely love it.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for your feedback!
The problem of being employed as a VFX artist in India is that, your salary might range from RS 20,000 - 40,000 ( $240 - $485 ) depending upon your position & most of the time the VFX companies are located in Bangalore and you have to move to bangalore , where you rent an apartment & the salary you get won't be able meet your food & rental cost. Also sending money back home is not even thinkable. Apart from that the amount of stress the department heads put on your shoulder & the daily reminder that you will get your name in the end credits of Big Blockbuster movies , which no one reads will drive you crazy for sure!
Sounds brutal, how does that compare to other tech related industries in India? Do you think it's specific to VFX?
It is a big problem. And the problem stems from many things. One being from the client abroad, the deals taken by your studios and the value given to you as an artist. There could also be a lot of artists than jobs available so this means studios have higher power in what they pay. It all stems down to value really. Prioritise health and value where possible, or a balance, where needing to provide for family is necessary.
@@TheVFXArtistsPodcast Most of these traits can be found in other IT companies, but most often times the time you work infront of a computer is just way higher in this industry when compared to other companies in India. Lower wages is a common thing in India, even for a person with Bachelors / Masters finding a job above RS 20,000 - 30,000 is just difficult. As VFX is a combination of both creative & technological work, stress on the creative part is much more draining when compared to other IT/ tech related jobs. This inturn leads to overworking of brain & leading to stress and depression. These are the harsh truth of being a VFX Artist in India which no one talks about !
Would you be up for doing an episode about this? You can find our contact details on our channel or website thevfxartistspodcast.com
Thank you for this. Could you have another conversation talking specifically for tips for international applicants? When is the best time to apply? Which job applications should I apply to? What should I prepare? Do i need work permit, especially in the remote environment that we have today?
Excellent questions, we do touch on this in our interview with Sophie Maydon from a recruiters perspective and some of our artist interviews cover their own experience (such as our interview with Mariá Carriedo from Mexico who worked in the US and now the UK). It's definitely something we want to dive into more in future!
This is a really Fantastic interview! Thanks for sharing!
