Elitism & Music Industry | A Discussion
It all comes down to whether you like it or not.
I hope you enjoy this ramble, there are so many things I wanna talk about, and constantly take over my mind. Art related stuff that everyone can jump in to help me come to conclusions, or not!
In this episode I am starting by searching the roots of elitism in music, and ending up discussing how messed the industry can be.

French nautical black metal Houle is worth checking out. Very unique and with a female vocalist. Svartkonst is another worth checking out, especially the song "haunt me". Kanonenfieber has a new track out "Der Maulwurf". Very solid. Der Maulwurf is German for "The Mole."

Some hot takes+ definitely :D but I like very much your trail of thoughts about artistry, musician and the classic masters.. and the background of studies you have enchances your words.. Just like the red background you have which brings me Twin Peaks vibes :D Other than that "elitism" especially in metal always existed, dunno your age but things weren't better in the 90s or 80s for sure, there are always people that like to show off/act sh1tfully and metal was never an exception.. Stay heavy artistic girl!!

This is not the old iteration of Limbonic Art, this is solo project now from the founding member Dameon. Morfeus was the other member of the band until around 07 (I believe) and he was the guy behind the electronics, I.e., drum programming and the keyboard composition, also guitar, and without him this band is bland and lacks depth and dimension. This is coming from a huge fan of this band also. Check out ‘Moon in the Scorpio’ and ‘In Abhorrence Dementia’ albums and see what you think. Cheers! 🍻

Some of my favourite metallic classical movements: - Shostakovich, symphony no. 10, esp. the allegro - Stravinsky, rite of string, esp. finale, Sacrificial Dance. You've heard it. - Mosolov, Iron Foundry (this is a rare gem, a must hear!) (edit: apparently it has gained an audience recently, Metallica performed it in 2019) - Schnittke, Requiem. The entire thing is extremely dissonant, try mvt. 3 Dies Irae if you're in a hurry. - Holst, the planets, Mars. - Ligeti, Requiem. 3:rd movement if you're in a hurry. - Penderecki, Threnody for the victims of Hiroshima. This one is as dark as the name suggests. I try to vary my classical propaganda based on what sort of metalhead I'm talking to, but these are my own favourites and I mostly go for djent, black, prog, doom and death metal. The "softer" metals might have more overlap with baroque/classical era/romantic composers like Bach, Haydn, Beethoven, Grieg, Dvorak, etc.

Erotomania by dream theater on the album Awake shares a similar thing. At 4:43, the guitar part really sounds like the Symphony No. 25 in G minor, K. 183 composed by Mozart at 1:20 I don't know if it's intentional, considering the parts aren't identical. Maybe Dream Theater was inspired by an other track

My understanding is that black metal started as a loose tag for Satanic-themed metal bands, usually with a kind of dark, thrashy sound. Bathory from Sweden was a key band and Mercyful Fate from Denmark were significant for subject matter and presentation, but it wasn't just in Scandinavia. There were also bands like Von in Hawaii, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost in Switzerland, Sarcofago and early Sepultura in Brazil, early Sodom in Germany, Venom in the UK, Blasphemy in Canada, early Rotting Christ in Greece, Profanatica in the US, it was really an international network of bands sending each other tapes and influencing each other. A very early incarnation of Mayhem in Norway was part of that network.

In my humble opinion, Edvard Grieg is the "father", or the most influential classical composer onto metal. His music was covered by everyone, from Kamelot, over Sonara Arctica, all the way to Myrkur and a plethora of amazing bands.

Have you by the way checked guitarist Mads Eriksen's album with metallized interpretations of some select pieces by Grieg? The album is called "Intermission Troldhaugen", and can be found on the typical streaming services. I particularly like track 6 "Gjendine's Lullaby" aka "Gjendines Bådnlåt" -- being labelled as a lullaby, and launching into some very fast virtuosic and mysterious-sounding passages, I feel it conveys the process of a child falling to sleep and drifting into a dreamworld, possibly with nightmares, possibly to wake up and needing to hear the lullaby a second time.

I like to pretend I am related to Bach, because I have his name... My friends call me "Bacshshsch" 😎I am unsure if that is an insult or compliment... Btw, I used to play two minutes of that fugue EVERY DAY, multiple times for YEARS. People were probably annoyed as fuck thinking "why in the hell does that guy not learn the whole thing" hahaha. I think of them as metal but in a way that is very folk and primitive. I dont mean "primitive" in a derogatory way. Like how they make their own instruments out of natural items and harken back to before modern times. I like to think of them as what metal would have been in pagan societies thousands of years ago. They are very interesting and enjoyable to listen to.

Heilung is esoteric music. It's like the meditative new age stuff you hear in spas and wellness massage joints, only with a nordic, dark ages type aesthetic. Of course it's not historic music. If it was, nobody would be listening to it. The key word here is "evocative", not "authentic". It's the same with all these fantasy and historic Hollywood movies and their soundtracks that people like to watch. It's epic cinematic music with a vaguely "historic" feel. If these movies had history-accurate soundtracks, everyone would hate it. Actual period music sounds jarring and unattractive to ears that are attuned to modern day musical practices and instrumentation, 440 Hz 12 tone equal temperament etc.

The last 2 albums do have kind of the same vibe to them. I won't say they aren't good, still Lammendamm has the better music and Death came throgh a phantom ship has the better story telling. Those 2 set a very high mark for symphonic black metal.
