Stephen Joines - The Swanage Photographer
Великобритания
Добавлен 26 июн 2007
Learning photography is not easy, but great fun.
Not only on this channel do I do regular vlogs, but also I will give hints and tips as well as follow along tutorials AND a few bits on creating videos too. Why is this photography channel different? because other photography channels are very robotic by sharing the same content week after week just to get views. Unlike the other channels who use expensive camera equipment, I use entry level/mid camera equipment to prove it's the photographer taking the photo and not the camera. (I save my expensive stuff for paid shoots).
I live in Swanage, Dorset UK. But travel around the Jurassic coast. So come and join me in my adventures and learn photography on the way. Stay Safe All.

Photography Vlog: Sunrise Chat While Checking Out New Location
nice one....from Nairobi Kenya
The world has changed, and has to catch up. In many situations shops have bought-up area's surrounding their property. Hence Private Land. Good advice otherwise.
Just found your video, one question I think I know the answer to is, I attend a lot of horse shows and obviously film/ photograph my kids, what is the law of having other peoples children in my pictures etc
If it is on public land then nothing changes. If it is on private land where permission is given to take photo's etc, then your fine. However, my view would be make sure you are not directly taking pictures of other children (i.e. they are in the background etc).
As I understood it even if a company commissioned the photographs the default position is the copyright holder is still with the photographer who took the picture(s), but with a limited right for the company to use the image(s) for the original purpose they were taken, if they then wish to use them for a different purpose they need to approach the photographer for permission. If however the contract at the time is agreed and signed that copyright holder transfers this to the company.
Thank you for that Stephen. I was pretty sure those were the laws, but it is always nice to have it more formally confirmed. Living in London I have been told not to use tripods by security guards on multiple occasions, but they always explain that I was on private land (Canary Wharf, etc.), and I guess on private land they make the rules. But they were always very polite, sometimes apologised, and made it clear I could continue to take pictures but without the use of the tripod. And one time, in Covent Garden, the security guard was kind enough to allow me to allow me to finish snapping a couple of frames I had just set up (selfie of me and the missus, with Covent Garden in the background), and then to put the tripod away (very nice security guard). Thanks again for the info Stephen. 👍
Nice video just found you Chanel, one thing you did not cover is taking photos around schools and play parks where children are involved,.I myself would say this is a big No No
Expecting some nonsense about 'kids' Problem is when you start being 'choosy' One mans commute is another mans train photograph, one mans look out its the 'cops' Into another mans Brilliant a new variant police car with new three tone horn. We are videoed constantly in daily life, banks, shops, the high street etc. About 8 years ago in London photography was enough to get you stopped and searched, NO QUESTIONS asked or answered, Thankfully the laws were changed (a bit) to stop that behaviour by police (Taking photographs of Major tourist places, yes inc MI6 shown in James Bond) And as we seen in Covid police do like to exercise their powers. (Not all, I have allways taken police as i find them) But it stopped my hobby, it got far too much hassle. So great video but to many excuses. ( You filmed my car/kid etc, where photographer never even seen said car kid)
Thanks for clarifying this. I’ve run into people who insist that I can’t take photos in public areas. But they’re all snapping away with phones…. Crazy!
Exactly!
US and UK laws are pretty much the same about photography. The only issue in the US I'm aware is to be careful of when you would need a model release which mostly has to do with advertising and similar commercial work.
Prisons are another example of what not to photograph, the one near us has big no photography or videos signs, the fact that half the employees probably have dash cams in their cars, plus the myriad other dash cam equipped cars that travel the roads surrounding the prison! 🤣🤣
I have a copy of the relevant sections of the law on my phone, just in case. I have been challenged once, most politely. I was displaying my classic car at a car show, I’m not overly precious about it and invite children that are showing an interest to sit in the car with parental permission and supervision. I will often take a photo of them as they are often very excited to sit in a “show” car. One mum asked me not to post the picture publicly because her partner was currently serving in the military and she felt it presented a risk, seemed a reasonable request so I deleted the photo for her peace of mind. Another thing I think is common courtesy is if a child is front and centre in an image ask the parent(s) before taking it. I have a lovely photo of a young boy’s face during his first interaction with a Red Squirrel, I emailed a copy to the father and never received so much as an acknowledgment of receipt! 😢
Only issue I had was after getting my first camera over 5 years ago, went to Lancaster castle with a basic bridge camera and a cheap Argos tripod. Security piled on as soon as I walked through the gate explaining that I could take photographs but would have to pay around £600 if I wanted to use the camera with a tripod.
Shopping Malls are not public places, apparently.
Nor are railway stations.
It also depends on the gear used. Canon shooters will always be cautioned. Nikon and Fuji users will be fine😂
I was taking photos outside Aintree racecourse about 2 years ago and a policeman came up to me and said that I could not take photos of person on their own but only people in a group !
One place you can't use a tripod any time day or night is Trifalgar Square in London. I was stopped and told they never allow tripods and that they don't issue any permits, ever. But that's the only place I the UK that I have encountered this.
Any law will only apply to 'commercial photography'. There is no law that forbids tripod use for 'the public' for their own use.
Dont like photos of people in public but the government photograph and track every thing you do
It always amuses me this idea that if you delete photo's they are gone. All you do is delete its location. As long as you don,'t continue to use the memory card in question so that the files are not over written they can be recovered easily with quite simple soft ware easily available to down load (Recuva)
TBH I always feel very apprehensive about photographing people without their permission. It's easier of course, if they are some distance away. The main exception to the rules must be, where children are in the frame. Sadly, though for good reason, many parents are concerned and, I feel, rightfully, object to their children being photographed in public places. I think, the last thing photographers want to do, is to alienate their subjects, so, sensitivity should be exercised at all times. If you're capturing a beach scene, for instance, and a bather is getting changed, we all deserve respect and privacy, even outdoors. It's common sense really. If you're planning a trip to a popular location, the weekend or bank holidays may not be the best time! There may also be reasons of security, why some will object to you photographing them or their location.
I would suggest standing on the pavement outside a junior school and photographing the kids playing is a ...No...No. Where are the pictures going to end up.. for this reason I hate drones. if my neighbour has a drone up in his gargen, I don't know which way the camera is pointed. On holiday, there is nothing annoys me more than drones flying up and down the beach, the lenses these days can zoom in anywhere. That reminds me, I must shut the curtains...!!!
I took a photo at a mc Donald’s window harmlessly on my phone as friend asked me where I was. The person that worked for McDonald’s called the police and yes the police actually contacted me asking to come talk to me, they said I’m not allowed to take photos of mc Donald’s worker at work, I replied that I though I was outdoors on a private car park but a public place and did not think I did anything wrong, they gave me a warning not to do it again, so was I in the wrong bearing in mind there are cameras filming you all around McDonald’s and indeed on the outside of McDonald’s and inside the building so is that fair which I also pointed out to the police and stated that mc Donald’s are firming me and also my dash cam in the car is also filming, Interesting and was bizarre at the same time

But the people I've run into are completely ignorant of the law but think they know and will on occaision challenge you and no matter how many times you quote the real law to them, they will continue to pester you with their version. But,if you're using a mobile 'phone they are unlikely to even notice you.........................
Right of panorama is the legal term. Just please don't take photos than may cause a confrontation without asking permission as a matter of courtesy and not lawful regulation.
Not sure what type of dancing that was but there should be a law against it!
I’m ancient enough to remember watching a photographer from the Observer work at a big Hyde Park event. She treated her subjects with respect and even engaged with pretty scary Punks. Never photograph children without parental permission. If you are arrogant and bombard possible subjects with the law and your rights you are likely make an enemy of anyone with a camera.
I dont trust the camera. You risk ruining images. Just change it manually then you know you wont get any surprises.
The Gov. site describes a public place as anywhere the public have access, whether paid or unpaid. So that would include publicly accessible 'private' property would it not? Can't seem to get a definitive answer on this.
Daniel Shensmith, aka Black Belt Barrister has covered this, (In some depth), including case law, P.S. His video covers the law and is not a discussion of individual Ethics .. Should you take the photo or not, Dave B
You do need to be careful to make sure the public place is actually public land. A prime example is the South Bank in London especially between Tower Bridge and London Bridge and around Waterloo and the area opposite Westminster. I think Trafalgar Square may be the same, they are private land where the public are allowed. There are some restrictions here, mainly about using tripods. You will get asked to put it away by the security guards, and they appear from nowhere. Obviously these are very busy areas so safety will be one one reason, but there are also high profile public buildings. Actually taking photos isn't a problem though, just keep the tripod out of sight.
Thanks - I use lots of stills in amongst my videos but never got beyond "Ken Burns" this adds a whole new world. Great stuff!
Glad it helped. Stay Safe.
I think the important issue is not where the photo/video is taken, but where it is shared. I once shot video inside a non public space without any problem but was politely asked not to share it with social media. I also shot footage of a church service and was asked not to include children, a fair comment. If any of my video footage includes closeups of children or adults I cut those bits, especially if sharing to RUclips.
What's more important is you can reject their appeals.
It depends, I got into grief because I took a picture of a statue, How was I to know the guy in the background was snogging his wife's Mum? (Just kidding it was his wife's sister)
Really? Try photographing children in a swimming pool and see what happens to you
Hi Steve hope you're well. Great video and tips such a shame about the lens, it was rather windy on that day if I remember. We didn't manage to visit step hollow as planned but there's always next year. I still struggle with visitation, I do practice it when I'm out taking photos so I think I'm improving a bit. I never shot RAW and JPEG together, definitely something I'll be trying out. Best wishes stay safe Jon and Karen
Hey Jon. Hope you both are well. Nice catch up as always. Luckily a replacement lens only cost me £48 (Thanks MPB!) and the camera is fine (few!). Defo worth trying out RAW + JPEG, but it does take a lot more space on your card. Maybe one day we will actually do a shoot together? Stay Safe.
Hope the lens didn't cost to much to replace? Nice tips.
Luckily not to much, thanks MPB! £48.
And this actually is valid advice for later in post - the range between 4000 and 6000 really looks good. I guess if you have clouds it would shift a bit as well. Great video and thanks!
Thank you. Stay Safe.
Hi Steve a good video, but do have one small point to make, some of your terminology whilst more experienced photographers will understand, those that are new may find some of your terminology as "duh what does he mean by that", just a small criticism, but i think relevant, no offence intended.
No offence taken! If anything I am greatful for your feedback. Stay safe.
@@StephenJoines thanks for that Steve, I am always open to using others experiences and expertise to further my own knowledge, thanks again.
Hi Steve hope you're well. Great video enjoyed your thought process on getting the compositions. That's definitely a good location with a change of angle or focal length so many compositions from 1 place. Great set of images my favourite was the very first one you took, but all great images. Definitely looked rather chilly out there, a lot different from today, battered by storm Bert. Best wishes stay safe Jon and Karen.
Thanks Jon, hope you both are well. It is nice on Buck Shore, out the wind. Only downside is it's shingle not sand so a bit more tricky setting up the tripod. Stay safe.
Love the cold weather! Nice images. I have read that If you updated Resolve during an edit it effected the audio, so did you update part way into editing?
Yes I did. Just looked in to that. My bad.
Chilly morning! - Sorry about the audio not being alighned. Don't know what happened as its fine in Editiing and fine when rendered. But for some reason RUclips has made it out of alignment. I have tried to 'slip' the audio but it still wont align.
Nice!
thanks
Just ordered a torch from amazon. I don't have a cat to play with after so will need to get one them too I suppose, lol. Wish me luck!
Plonker. Good luck. Stay Safe.
Hi Steve hope you're well. Great video tutorial and explanation of equipment and camera settings. Definitely one I'll be trying out, I'll need to get some touches and a black background as I think the grey one I use probably won't work. Great set of images the black and white image worked really well, thanks for the inspiration and something for a future video project. Best wishes stay safe Jon and Karen.
Hey Jon, hope you both are well. You can try with a grey background as it may give it a different look. Also, any light source will do, even a candle. Going g to be doing stuff with candles very soon too. Stay safe.
Instead of a number, I'd say anything long enough to smooth out the water surface or waving grasses, etc.
Thanks for the comment. I totally agree. It's more than just a number. Stay safe.
Hey dude. Final image ... wow. love it. I would agree 2-5 seconds or above depending on what you are doing. But as you said, there is actually no set time to say where it starts or ends etc. You thought there would be or even go exposure, medium exposure to long exposure. I do need ot get some ND filters though.
Hey Marus. Hope your doing ok? how's the broken arm? Think of what exposure is to understand that we actually manipulate the exposure to create different effects. I think this is why there is not set rule and more a photographers judgment. Stay Safe.
Amazing photos, in a beautiful place 😊
Thanks Karen! hope you are well. Stay Safe.
Hi Steve hope you're well. GrGreat video and thoughts on long exposure, agreed around 10 seconds and above I would say is a long exposure, or in my case anything I can't handhold without getting a blurred image 😅. Great set of images, the final one is my favourite, it took me a while to work out where you were stood. Looking forward to the indoor long exposure, maybe something I can follow along a try out. Best wishes stay safe Jon and Karen
@@lensmanonline Hey Jon. Hope you are well. The long exposure at home is a very simple setup. You have just done a video about a DIY backdrop, well don't pack it away as you will need it. Oh, and no filter needed for it either. Stay Safe.
Hi Steve hope you're well. Best laid plans of mice and men (or photographers) as they say, great set of images the last 1 was definitely my favourite. Great video and good to see how you changed your plans, I could have stayed for a while longer like you, one day soon hopefully. Best wishes stay safe Jon and Karen
Hey Jon. Thanks for the comment and hope you are both well. It was a shame I couldn't stay longer, had to sort out my dads boiler as it was not working. But the hour or so I was there I was in heaven. Stay Safe.
beautiful images.
Thanks!
Nice. I am enjoying these about long exposure. Learned a lot. What do you class as long exposure? Love the last image.
Hey Marcus, hope you are ok bud. Funny you should ask that question as I have just done the Video talking about the same thing today. So wont answer it here and you will have to wait until next week.
Is this a good one i got sony fx30 but was way more expensive
I don't know anything about the Sony fx30. Sorry.
"Top Secret Tricks" clickbait, there is no secret about anything in photography !
Oh my, get a grip. I have just had a quick look about and haven't seen anyone else talking about this method. I think someone is just a moaner.
I actually use TubeBuddy, which helps generate titles. As this one obviously bugged you so much I have altered it. Hope that is better for you. Stay Safe.
