This is a new video series I'm starting, roughly every 2 months I'll show what is flowering, ripening, or ready to eat in this Florida food forest. Using Shingles as Weedblock

In a previous video I showed the beginning of using shingles as a weed block, in this video the project continues. You can often find free shingles and they work far better then weed block products. Rotary Scissors - Win the Weed War
Просмотров 6 тыс.3 года назад
The weeds are winning the war, at least they were before I got this new weapon. A regular weed trimmer just cannot keep up with the amount of growth I have. Thestring based trimmers are destructive, constantly need cleaning and line replacement, plus the damage to my legs from flying debris makes it so I just don't want to bother. Rotary scissors change all that, they cut fast and cleanly throu...

The Best Earthbox Cover

Quite possibly the best Earthbox covers and yet so simple! I like everything about Earthboxes, except dealing with the covers. Using this new method is easy and inexpensive plus they hold up very well through the season. No more ripped elastic and sagging, I've tested this over the last year and it stays nice and tight. Aquaponic System Still Growing After Shutdown
Hell of an upload... thank you!!
Let’s see the forest in 2025
how do you install the pipes into the barrels
Uniseals, I've used them for years on aquaponic systems and never had a leak. Drill hole, pop uniseal in, press pipe through. There's a link to them in the video description.
@GardeningSolutions awesome. Thankyou
does your barbados cherry sucker,i personaly never heard of that but some said theres in AUstralia produce suckers and there going to remove them.and yes they are the same plant.
It has not but seedlings have popped up from dropped fruit. My strawberry tree aka Jamaican Cherry has produced suckers but I have not been successful splitting them off.
@@GardeningSolutions sorry my mistake i did mean Jamaican Cherry!!!
It is mainly based on weight when they bag it
Looks good!
Never in my wildest dreams I ever seen that
Avocado is not true to seed. It might take up to 15 years to get any fruit on seedlings. Why not graft?
I now have about 10 grafted varieties and 20 from seed. I've got plenty of space to work with so I'm going both routes and may graft some of the known ones onto the seed grown ones.
@@GardeningSolutions I get probably 15 seedlings a year and graft them all. I have 9 grafted trees in the ground and 9 in pots. There is really no reason to have a seedling unless it has sentimental value, eg family member gave it etc.
Disagree… my seedling mangoes and avocados grow much stronger than my grafted nursery trees. Adding a graft yourself is the way to go if you have the ability to do it.
if you have a large strong seedling - yeah by all means you can graft several varieties too. I have a large one in 7g pot, about 5 ft tall for the next year. Will have four varieties grafted to it. I had veneer graft failed on it, and the tree stayed strong
The promix does VERY well for cannabis ! Mix worm castings and 444 all purpose and 284 bloom both from gaia green a compost tea or 2 for large , potent flowers, and end weight is more than satisfactory !
So what do you do in the winter? Just drain it out? Or do you disassemble?
Nothing, I'm in Florida. No threat of freezing.
@@GardeningSolutions LOL! Well that helps me none, Im a bit further north.
Mate- you need to move!
Typical Florida, gotta take the good with the bad.
WOW, great system. Well thought out. So without a pump, what kind of Water Pressure (psi) do you get based on the 4' stand?
It's a pretty good flow but I'm not sure what the psi is, very low. I'm adding a booster pump to get it up to around 50 psi for automatic watering for my earthboxes.
Theyvev been enockulated already so it helped the others also they keep growing in soil
Its the microryzne thats doing it i love that type of soil
Got a healthy velvet bean vine and don’t know how to determine if it’s the itchy kind. Any suggestions aside from picking them? How did you wind up using the beans?
No ideas other than picking them. So far I've just grown them for fun, haven't really used them.
@@GardeningSolutionswell I’ve never been more successful with cherry tomatoes! The velvet bean has locked in the nitrogen they love and they are still producing.
I have been looking at Pro Mix several times, so thanks for this video, now I know what to expect, good results :)
Very helpful. Set up my first bunch of crape myrtles a few minutes ago. Rich
Good luck!
You should get more than one season out of these covers that’s ridiculous. I’ve got 54 Earth Boxes they’ve gone up to $2.25 each that I have to pay every single year. I pay 121.50 a year that’s ridiculous. I’m trying your idea for sure.

Cover that clear sight gauge now or you will have algae in your system. I use a pool noodle for cover on my system
I meant to, although it is algae covered now I can still see the level. I'll try the noodle idea, thanks!
Love your setup. Although I plan to put a first flushing diverting system, I love your setup and will do something similar. I was wondering how is the pressure coming out of the spigot? Is their decent pressure? Could there be more if each individual barrel is elevated differently? Trying to get an idea. Thanks
I get pretty good pressure although I do plan on adding a booster pump. You could elevate some higher but any below that would have to be water tight as water will seek to stay at the same level in all barrels. You'd have to have a tall vent to allow water to escape the barrel but keep the water in.
Why plastic barrels and not metal?
I live in a very corrosive environment plus the plastic is more available and easier to work with. They had contained food grade products.
Thanks for the video. I like your pvc stands you made and the long board on cinders for headlight and separation from ground.
Could I use a quarter inch mister From a mini irrigation system And just make an Adaptor to fit the riser?
No reason that wouldn't work :)
This is freaking amazing! Simple and very intelligent.
What do you do for venting/overflow?
I have the caps at the top loose and just let them overflow in place, it doesn't hurt anything in my setup. I plan on 3D printing some vent caps to keep mosquitoes and frogs out.
What do you think would be the maximum height you can go to with the uprights? My tomatoes get a lot taller than 3 feet!
Not much taller, I did experiment using 3/4 inch PVC at 5 foot height and it was plenty strong but it's not very economical to build.
Love it. I plan on building one for my garden
Hello, did you ever do an upgrade on your plant stand? Getting ready to make ones of these. Thank you for sharing!
Not yet but I still plan on it.
Do you have a fallow up video?
It wasn't very successful, not as easy and foolproof as some people claim.
I use the water softener salt bags…heavy duty white, good for Florida intense sun. also the same bags that the soil comes in that you replace in the Earth box. It’s ironic you already have the plastic looking you square in the face. There’s also plastic from Amazon called panda it’s black on one side and white on the other it’s quite heavy duty and works very well I’m going to try to learn how to put the elastic in them but I’m using irrigation tubing clips per mate just like the person that made this video works well but if no you need to overfill your earth boxes and have a crown above the edge and then cover it to keep water from getting in from the top and causing your soil to be too hot from fertilizer that’s been hit with water for the top, don’t let water come in from the top make sure your covers go over the edge and you have a mound of dirt as Earthbox recommends.
I would agree with what you said; besides keeping rain from indruding, mounding up the soil also provides more growing space for roots
@@elizabethblane201 You can just use the bag from the potting soil, cut it with scissors, tie knots in the corners so they fit tightly on earth box. Usually there’s a white interior side that you can use in the hot climates., I sometimes use my water softener salt bags. They’re very heavy duty. Hope this works for you!
@@woodwind1335 Good idea!
The second item is a gimmick and does not do anything. If you bought one, you can get your money back. A Mississippi-based company called AC2T, the inventors of the Spartan Mosquito repellent, agreed to a $3.6 million class-action settlement regarding false advertising claims.
Thanks for the info, I see the window to get a refund closed quite a while ago.
@@GardeningSolutions You are correct. It looks like it closed Dec 31 2023. Anyway, don't buy the product.
Nice clean and well thought out! Exactly what I plan to do to water my growbeds. I'm going to make one or two barrels isolated with diluted fertlizer that automatically opens on a separate timer once a week to fertilize the garden as well.
That's a great idea. I might just add a barrel for that :)
Nice set-up! We are planing to capture the rainwater at our new place, but there's a hitch: The house is downhill from the garden -- probably 10-15 feet difference, if I had to guess. You mentioned a pump -- I was wondering if we had a barrel system at the house, and a solar-powered pump at the garden, if it might help bring the water up there (instead of me carrying 5-gallon buckets). Any thoughts? Thanks!
My use case is a little different, I need higher pressure for the EarthBox automatic watering system. I bought this pump: amzn.to/4bipccP It's designed to keep a constant higher pressure. I'll probably run it on a cycle (2 x per day for an hour). For your application there's many ways to go about it, maybe a float valve at the lower barrel to trigger a pump to push the water up to the garden reservoir? Solar & battery is a good way to go.
Nice
make sure to check your local areas to see if there is a required permit or it may be fineable. not illegal. but some states/counties require a well permit inorder to collect rainwater. something you NEED to look into if you live in high drought areas. collecting rainwater does have an impact on the ground water. every single thing in life there is cause and effect.
No permit required here, they actually encourage it. I live in an unincorporated area but the city nearby will rebate you the cost of setting one up :) www.melbourneflorida.org/departments/public-works-utilities/environmental-community-outreach/rain-barrel-rebate
God made the rain and if you are so foolish to feel you need to check with someone to see if its okay to collect rain water, you are part of the problem. God made the rain and NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO TELL YOU THAT YOU CAN'T COLLECT IT AND IF YOU WOULD LET SOMEONE MAKE YOU PAY TO COLLECT IT OR FINE YOU FOR NOT ASKING SOMEONES PERMISSION YOU NRED A REALITY CHECK
Has anyone grown watermelon that is what I am really searching for content.
I haven't tried watermelon in an EB but squash does very well.
@@GardeningSolutions I'm guessing watermelon will probably be ok as well
Very nice setup..appreciate ur hard work and showing us the vid..impressive...well thought out...ty
I appreciate that!
@@GardeningSolutions I got the barrels but the tops are sealed. How did you get them off to make connections. Nice job. Looks great
I forgot how I found your channel originally but great information. Just watched your food forest video and you listed off so many plants I’m interested in haha. Cassava being a big one. Do you get frost in your area of FL? I’m in Naples, so I rarely do, but I’m wondering how the cassava handles it.
We get occasional frost but I think the heavy tree canopy here helps hold heat in. I'm hoping to get an updated property tour posted soon, there's been a lot of new additions!
Great job bro looks really professional.
Thank you so much 👍
I love the rope handles! I was trying to figure out a way to put handles on mine
They are still holding strong :)
What varieties are you growing?
Hua Moa, Dwarf Cavendish, and Ice Cream in the circles. I've also got Truly Tiny, Goldfinger, Grand Nain, Plantains, and a few others scattered around. I'll probably add some new banana circles soon as the plants do so much better there.
What type of drill bit did you use for the handles?
Just a standard 1/2" bit I believe. Might have been 5/8.
Awesome! I bought a massive roll of black plastic and used paracord to tie it down over the edge of the box, but the box tapers downwards and the paracord has to be tied around the water tube to keep it up. The cord deteriorates in the sun too. I had thought about magnets or drilling a screw through the box to pin the plastic down but your clips is such a great idea! Thanks!
I tried bungee cords previously and had the same issue, they just don't last in the sun.
They want $20 for this stuff now.
Yes unfortunate but still a good deal compared to the others.
I've been struggling with trellis, cages, stakes for years with my earthboxes. This is excellent! You should market and sell them. I'm surprised Earthbox itself doesnt steal your idea and sell them. Anyway, thanks again!
they do, they litterly have their very own that goes with the boxes. 5 feet tall if I remember correctly
I’m glad I found this video. I’ve been looking for a better way to hold my earth box covers on for years. This is the answer. Thanks.
What a brilliant idea
Hello! Thanks for the video! I tried to open the Google drive link but it's telling me it no longer exists. Any way to get a copy of it?
Thanks for letting me know, I updated the link so please give it a try again.
Thank you so much!
Mosquito Magnets work. They are the real deal. Don't use Thermacell's, they're toxic AF.
