I wonder if I need to do this as well....as of this writing Ive a busted hose and and need to replace my coolant reservoir as well because my cap came lose and the spring is out of it with the lower half being stuck in the reservoir itself. But I wonder if a bad thermostat housing over time caused my 16 Dart GT to raise temperature to cause my hose to bust. Or should I replace it anyway to save myself the trouble in the long run. Perhaps Im overthinking and to tell on myself, I got the car with 43K miles in Oct. 2017.....she has 171K miles now and not a thing has been replaced up til now aside from headlights and 2 headlight ballasts.
What size hose did you use? Mine broke where it connects to the connector lol I think you said 5/16ths?
Thank you for sharing this
Thank you professor!! I came to RUclips University for this issue. You instructions helped me so much and I saved a lot of money with your assistance. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Very helpful. How much would this be to get replaces at midas/ retail place , you/ home tech and the dearler?
I'd estimate $1000-1500 at Midas, and here's why. A few years ago on a road trip, my vacuum pump went out. Stopped at Midas and had to pay $200 (was $50 online) for part and $600 for labor and this part was literally on top of the engine with 4 bolts. For something as intricate at the thermostat housing, I'd estimate double that price. And I'd easily say $1500+ at dealership. Me? $300-$400. It took a couple of hours to complete.
Thanks for this, helped a ton. One note of caution though: On the driver side, you'll probably see a cable that looks like a strand of black licorice. That is your hood release cable. Be careful, do not put too much tension on that cable, while installing the new fan. I noticed, the top corner of the fan shroud, kept coming in contact with it. If you snap that cable, you're going to have a bad time.
Thanks for the video. My wife and I each have 2017 Bolts, with 30k miles on each one. Is there something we should or could do preventatively to help prevent this from happening to our lovely Bolts? Currently have no issues.
The only thing I can think of it avoid maxing out lock to lock (side to side). But honestly, I just think they're poorly made. Even the new replacement part has some wear to it already 18 months later. I might be doing another replacement in a couple of years. Hope your Bolts are treating you well. Also, look forward to some upcoming videos. This particular Bolt hit a deer and has some front end damage. The repair videos should be educational.
I’m having issues with AC also , how did / do you know it’s the thermostat housing ? Bc maybe this is my issue too but Idk for sure .
I knew it was thermostat housing because I had a check engine light and code for the thermostat. If you're having AC issues, check out my other video about replacing the blower motor. A thermostat issue isn't connected to an AC issue.
I would not have tried this job based on the description in the shop manual. Thanks for making the video, the change out went pretty well. A few notes though. I could not get the old rack out until I got the very back of the subframe to be 2 5/8 inch below the unibody. I did need to take the motor mount out of the way and I moved the sway bar mounts and did not take the links off. Additionally, I didn't take out the fender liners. Just taking the 3 torx screws out of each side allowed the material to be folded back so I could loosen the front mount bolts. Then on reassembly I used a fitting fitting socket as an alignment pin to insure alignment of the subframe to the body. Those matching holes are next to the outside rear subframe mount bolts. Book also says to throw away a bunch of bolts cause they are torque to yield, I reused them like you did, but the book torque specs don't work for reuse. So I had to wing it also. I think I paid myself $250/hr today base on what the dealer was going to charge. Thanks again Bottle jack comment was a good one. I used jack stands to rest the subframe on, then the floor jack to raise / hold up the motor, then a bottle jack to lift the subframe a bit to allow motor mount bolt insertion. I only have one of each.
Nice work. You got the job done and that's all that matters. I'm happy you found the video helpful, thanks for watching.
Great video, thanks
Well done! 👏🏻
Looks like I will be doing this.... Dealer wants $3300 ! anyone done this on a 2017 base model?
Process will be the same on that model. Thanks for watching!
The seal failure explains the stain in the belly pan
Yes, indeed it does. I can't remember if I mentioned it while recording. It is definitely the leaking seal that stained it. Thanks for watching.
Ima try this! The car started to over heat and went to check the fan and its not spinning anymore. 😮😅 So i guess it needs replaced now.
You made a very explicit video, thank you so much for this great help. ❤
Hi, I'll be doing this on my own car later this month. Can you share the part you used and where did you get it?
@joemechanicc Hi Joe. I got the part directly from GM. The part # is down in a few other comments/replys. Good luck on the repair. Let us know how it goes.
Can this be applied to a 2017 Chevy bolt ? Because I have the same problem, thank you so much for the great video.
Hi, the procedure should be exactly the same. I have a 2017 Bolt with 100k miles. My dealership wants over $3k for this. I'm watching everything I can and will be doing this very soon.
@joemechanicc mine has 53k on it, I've started hearing the clunk noise like a month ago, I don't know when exactly I should fix it, currently I have no time to do it myself but I'll never pay $3k to get it fixed, please let me know whenever you fixed it, thank you for your response, wish you a good luck
@@AminovFitBody a clunk is different than the steering not returning to center. I saw a video where the ujoint between the steering rack and the steering wheel connects was loose. The guy just tighter it and if fixed the clink
@@AminovFitBodygo to the 5 min mark in this video. That's the joint that was making a clunk noise in the other video, because it was loose.
I saw that video too. I just checked the lower joint, and I'm gonna check the others now, even though my steering wheel mostly centers itself but not 100%
Did this this weekend by myself , I would recommend 2 bottle Jack's with boards to hold things up only because of space constraints, and I would use another 2 jack stands for the front of the car. Floor Jack's work but I found them to be a pain in the butt to work around. I used this video and the write up on the chevy bolt forum. Great job guys
Damn!! I don’t even want to start it. My back one was leaking oil at first now both of them are. FML. My damn car be smoking on the highway 😂😂🤦🏻♂️
Very nice work. 😊
Thanks for taking the time to make this video.🧐
Fine job
How do you know when the fan is bad how do you test it I checked all fuses and relays they're good
Fan is bad when it doesnt work anymore.
I did exactly as you. Checked the fuses and relays. All were good. I used my multimeter to check continuity on the fan just to double check and there was none.
Hey was putting the foam back in a pita or did you split it in half 😂 love the video 🫡
It wasn't too difficult to put back in surprisingly. And I managed to keep in one piece.
This tutorial saved us hours! Thank you!
Why do they go out so fast?
My car Engine Stalls at Lights , long stops, and stop signs sometimes , have you ever experienced something similar?
Yep… your oil/ oil pressure is low. Mine did it going up any small incline. I changed my oil to a thicker oil and never had an issue since
You are a great son!!!!!
Thanks for the video. I have a loud clunking sound on my Bolt when going over uneven road surface. I replaced the sway bar links and right A-arm but did not solve the clunk. So I dropped the subframe just like you did and totally removed the sway bar - clunking sound is still there so its not the sway bar (or links). Maybe its the steering linkage but the clunk sound is made even when driving straight (no need to be turning the wheel). The steering is stiff - I am not sure if it returns to center as the car is currently up on blocks trying to solve this issue. Do you think it could be the steering gear?
It sounds like it's the steering gear. It sounds like you're pretty handy. If you want to know for sure, remove the steering column from the gear in the foot well as I show in the video. Then try to turn the wheels by hand with both wheels in air. If you're unable to, it's definitely the steering gear box. Wish you luck
Of course u ant gonna do that back mtfr that's what I need too see if your front is leaking it won't be long and don't u think your back is gonna be leaking Der Der der
Are you wrong, no. However I did what I needed too at the time and it's all the owner wanted me to do. You won't be getting a follow up anyway for the back because the car was totaled 3 years ago. Thanks for watching.
Just did this repair this weekend thanks to your video. It took a total of about 6-7 hours. No real issues due to watching you do it. Thank you so much for the effort in putting this out. I would not have tried it had it not been for this video.
You're very welcome. I think it took me around the same time. I hope you were able to learn from my mistakes. Thanks for watching
With 130,000 miles on my Bolt, my steering doesn't want to return sometimes and it looks like this is why. $3k is too much money and this is a worrying amount of work. Just seems like there's a lot I could mess up. Kinda wonder how long I can ignore the problem
My mom ignored it for about a year before almost having a wreck on the highway because the steering rack decided it didn't want to return to center through force. So don't ignore for too long.
Thank you for this.
There's an easier way to get the control arm in. 1. Get the back side in with the vertical bolt loosely installed 2. Get the ball joint in the hub with the retainer bolt loosely installed 3. Make sure the axle is installed in the hub, then move the front end of the control arm in. Use a mallet to align the lateral axis, then use a floor jack to adjust the height. She goes right in.
You're one of those guys who will succeed at anything he puts his mind to! Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
Thank you. I appreciate that very much.
On mine there was to plastic push pins on the tree bolt removel of the sub frame
I can see why the dealers want $ 3000. for this job a lot of labor?
It's my understanding that they drop the entire subframe to perform this repair. So definitely a lot more work than I did, and I did a lot. So 2500 for labor makes sense, but it's still ridiculous. Thanks for watching.
Great JOZ, amazing JOB .... Just two easy questions ... 1.- Have you got the reference of the spare part??? 2.- And more important ... is the new spare part different?? Has other reference than the original one?? I am afraid of buying a new one and have the same problem 30.000 miles later ...
I believe I dropped it in a another comment but here it is. GM part number: 42353783. To your second question, it's the exact same as the original. You just have to replace the outer tie rods. Also, you can replace it but I believe this will be a recurring problem. If the first part failed quickly I could see the replacement failing too since it's the same design. It'll keep failing until GM changes the design or a law suit comes their way.
Warranty didn’t cover this? Bummer.. Seems like a lot of these are failing at relatively low miles.. Class action suit!
It was just out of warranty by around 4k miles. But I'm sure it was already getting bad before the cut off but my mom didn't notice or bother telling me🤦♂️
my car is having these issues. Could you tell me the part number for the rack?
sorry never mind i see in the comments.
Wow! 40k miles and you have to replace a steering gearbox. Makes me think that I should steer clear of the Chevy Bolt.
Not too many videos on the 13-16 dart, and most dont explain to the level of detail and reasons why, that your video does. Thanks very much for your work. This will make aupcoming wheel bearing job on my '13 a ton easier.
9:42 how did you get those out of the slot?
You did a very good job on changing your wheel bearing. My issue is is that my wheel bearing on my 2018 Nissan is stuck. It seized up and I can't get it off.
What did you end up doing?
mine just stopped working a few days ago, still looking at videos to fix it, someone told me to replace fuse, but didn't work, now I'm going to try out the relay, so if does not work then change whole fan just like you did, Thanks for the video man!
Don't see how it wore out so fast. Defective part from the factory?
Car have very wide turns, compared to Asian cars. I can assume someone slammed steering in attempt of getting tighter turn. Just need to get used to it it's not too bad
Awesome, THANKS! That's a lot of loosened bolts, I would think about marking them with a grease pencil or something so I don't forget.
Do whatever you gotta do 👍 There was a fair amount of them. I stay organized and always try to put the bolts back in their respective location if the part is removable. If not then a magnetic organization tray is the next best.
@@truckscarsandcoffey3973 Smart. I worry more about the loosened bolts because it's not as visible, probably says more about my memory than the procedure.
How did u know it was the fan not the relay 😊
I switched the relay with a different relay in the fuse box and it still wasn't working. So my next guess was the radiator assembly itself.
I’m having the exact same issue and am so glad I found this video! Thank you for the walkthrough. Could you provide the part number or a link of where to buy the gear? I’m finding different prices online. Thank you
Here is the GM part number: 42353783. When I was looking to purchase this part, I started online but everywhere was out of stock. So I called 2 of my local GM dealers, both could have the part available next day and it was $330-$340.
@@truckscarsandcoffey3973awesome. Thanks so much!
I test drove a used 2019 Bolt and it had the symptoms you mentioned at the beginning of the video. I'd never had a car feel like that on the road and now I know what was wrong with it!
