S18 BAKING BREAD - ASLSK Solo After Action Report
I recognise some elements of the solo assistant being similar to the Fields of Fire system published by GMT. Maybe you should try it since you are into solo playing.
Yeah, I've heard good things about Fields of Fire, so will add your recommendation to the list - it definitely warrants a closer look! But for GMT, what I really have my eye on is "Red Dust Rebellion" - the setting seems cool, and I've ve never played a COIN game before
What's the diameter of the bases?
They're just a little bit over 5 cm/2 inches
As a former Armada player with an FDM printer, this is right up my alley :)
If you've already got a printer, the cost of entry is definitely worth it!
Hey! I just bought the game today, then I found this video 😀 Two more factions/fleets will be released in 2025. I hope this sells well and they can support it further. It just needs some more lore, tbh.
They've already released the first 2 expansions, which I did buy immediately - I'm accumulating files quicker than I can print and paint them! Got a pair of small fleets now so I'll do a better video of my thoughts on the rules sometime - looking forward to having some new factions though!
What size build plate do you need to print these off.?
I have a 200mm x 200mm build plate, and I had no problem printing multiple ships at once. The single largest model is a piece of asteroid terrain - but that's not required, you could easily make terrain the old-fashioned way. Even if you had a small 100mm x 100mm build plate you could still print full size ships easily
That's good to know as the build plate size I have is only 100 x 100 x 100mm..
@andyalton1649 you'll be fine printing off all the ships and counters, just the larger terrain and ruler might be an issue. Like I said, DIY asteroid terrain from foam/paper mache etc would be fine, and the ruler just measures inches so you could use anything else
Can also use them with Void Admiral, another simple ruleset
I'd not heard of Void Admiral, another one to check out!
well done
The dice gods smiled on me that game! Thanks for watching it
The cards look damn cool. But when it comes to Lovecraft games... I had some experiences (Elder Sign, Lovecraft Letter...) which were like, it's only cool because it's Lovecraft but the game itself was mediocre at best.
Yeah, the components of this game are great, and the art is excellent - just the actually game itself is dull! There's so much choice with Cthulhu-based gaming now you really have to put some effort in to stand out, especially with well established, high quality games like Arkham Horror (both board and LCG) and Death May Die on the market.
Looks like a great game. Thanks for sharing. Subbed!
It was a good one, but victory felt more like a gift from the dice gods than any tactical genius! Thanks for the sub, I've given you one back, hopefully I'll learn some painting tips from you!
I'm very excited about this game. So much potential and I love the Kurrgan ships, I'm printing a Heavy Cruiser right now at 150% as my first and capital ship
I've printed 3 ships per side now (Heavy Cruiser, Destroyer and Frigate) for starter fleets. Now printing up some asteroids and tokens etc, ready for a first learning game. Everything that's not a ship I've been printing at 0.2mm layers just to get them done faster - those large asteroids are no joke!!!
Why dont they just make them that shape 😅
ASL=Old School!!! Modern games like Lock N Load Tactical have seen the light and provide them pre-rounded - I don't see MMP *EVER* changing though!
I have been a longtime follower of Fat Dragon Games since their early paper terrain days. I'm really excited to try this new game, and I can't wait for the expansions that have been teased!
It's definitely good that they've already teased a few expansions - hopefully, they'll support the game beyond those too!
Damn!!! That's CRAZY easy!!!! Raaco Stock just Dropped into the basement
Lol, might not beat Raaco but a flexible solution. Definitely beats the "mixed up counters in baggies" approach hahaha
Its a very good game and the miniatures print flawless.
They definitely print well - I needed a BRIM for the small pieces like the ship bottom connectors and the base poles, but the ships themselves are doing fine with no kind of support at all
@@CategorySoloI started printing the minis yesterday, they come out very well with the suggested parameters. In the assembly guide it says you should print all things with a brim. Really excited to play my first game.
@arnhelmkrausson8445 my table is a bit on the smaller side, so I'm tempted to print at 75%
Looks like a cool package. Do the solo rules have a decent AI or is it more playing both sides the best you can?
It works in a few ways - the initial scenarios are purely solo, graduating up to a federation cruiser vs a klingon ship, with "robot" rules directing the klingon. From then on the scenarios are 2 player, and I mostly play 2 handed - but the robot pilot can be made to work with some of the other vessels as well. Later on there is a purely solo scenario, of your ship versus a planet eating monster... There is a huge range, and of course it expands even more for the full game - but 2 handed or solo vs robot are both enjoyable and workable
Thanks, enjoyed and some good ideas.
Thanks for watching!
Nice stream and I like your spreadsheet setup for meeting, attack, defence. Looks good as you use the low dice for leaders. looking forwards to the next stream. I have the game - not played yet as I am starting with the Grand-daddy of all tactical war games - ASL... going with the Asl starter kits and then once I understand that will come down to the next leavel "Assault Red Horizon 41" and Lock-n-load and Old School tactical.
Thanks for watching! ASL Starter Kit is a great game, but even the starter rules make something much more complex than Lock 'N Load. I've done some videos of my games, but if you are learning I really recommend looking up the "Harsh Rules Tutorials" here on RUclips for ASLSK - he does an excellent job breaking the rules down for a newbie!
Here's a link to the playlist ruclips.net/p/PLILH0sBz61UbBGaxi4jw7uvEhYlMTH8kM
@@CategorySolo thanks and yes harsh rules did a great setup for asl. Thanks for the pointers
Really looking forward to your playthrough. Thank You. I've just started looking at this game, and your videos have been helpful. I'll likely purchase this strictly for solo play. Thank again.
Thanks for watching! I really recommend this game for solo play, it's definitely worth picking up! And I can't wait to dig into a proper campaign - hopefully I'll be posting a game a week, but boring old real life has a habit of getting in the way of my gaming plans!!!
how about Blade: Sisterhood?
I've never played it - I think I passed over it on a browse of the BGG PNP competition lists... But I've just downloaded it, will print it up and have a play!
Nice tricks! Is it possible to change the size of the counters or the hexes so that a mmc or gun f.e. appears smaller in a Hex? In the tutorial PDF by richfam f.e. you can see in the images that his counters dont fill the hexes completely. Thanks
Not for individual counters (at least that I know), but you can get the "board zoomer" extension which will make the hexes themselves larger. I can't offer much more than that I'm afraid - I know it exists but haven't used it myself!
@@CategorySoloThat is exactly what i was looking for. Thank you!
@@jimknopf6014 No worries, happy gaming!
I really do apologize for this being a stupid question, but where did you get these materials? Are they part of a released product, or did you print them yourself? Also do you need the Solo Assistant to make it work? Just getting into it, and I’m clearly confused! :-)
So all this comes from the same product, "Heroes of the Bitter Harvest" from Lock 'N Load Publishing (unboxing of that is here ruclips.net/video/LhiHHpyOSn8/видео.html) It is ostensibly a 2 player tactical heck and counter game, but one of the pieces included is the Solo Assistant for playing 1 player. Also included is a scenario generator and a light role playing campaign system - this one boxed product includes plenty to play with!
Oh thank you so much for that explanation! I’m going to go grab a copy and give it a try. Subscribed, and thanks again! :-)
@seanm3330 no worries! It's a fun system, and perfect when gaming for 1!!!
Well done sir
Thanks man!
Counters in RAACO suitcase style boxes, hasl maps in old ASL flatbox, geo maps in 3 ring binders w/ page protectors, scenarios in several 3 ring binders, w/ protectors. If you are into ASL you are just using an interim solution until you buy RAACO. Lessons learned the hard way... Hope you aren't punching those scenario cards. If you did you just lowered the resale value. No one wants punched scenario cards, because some people do it wrong. Info can and will be lost - they are not designed to be punched.
Well for my counters I am moving them over to my custom 3D printed storage, and it is a near perfect choice so far! As for the scenarios - those in my folder are all photocopied onto 200GSM cardstock, with the originals safely tucked away - same for the QRDCs, although those are basically redundant compared to the SK Combat Charts on ASL-Players.net Geomaps are in the binder in protectors, with an extra sheet showing an overview of the map printed from VASL
It couldn't be better timing. I just got a 3D printer, and yesterday, I was searching for a new way to store counters for games like Combat Commander, DDay at Omaha, and Combat. Then I came across this. Thank you.
Perfect timing indeed! Let me know how your prints come out!
Nice!
Thanks!
great video
Now they just need to release more SK content so I have something else to open!
You’re right.. Get it! It’s my favorite in hand game, and competing also with other great 18 card games.. I can recommend Ragemore and Last Lighthouse as well.. I think I’m going to have Galdor’s Grip as the next game in my Game in your Pocket video series.. Thanks for sharing👍
I've heard of Last Lighthouse, but not Ragemore, I might have to do some googling!!!
Happy bday on both counts!!!
Thanks man!
Well, yeah...
Obvious in hindsight, but sometimes I'm an idiot lol
Hey! I'm that "chap from Canada". Now I'm famous... or infamous. It has been fun playing with you. I will get the next log back to you today, I promise. I can concur that the interjecting of moves in a log sounds more complicated than it is in practice. It flows naturally as long as you already understand the flow of the ASL or ASLSK turn sequence.
No rush, our game is now more about me saving face than actually getting the win haha
You played one of my scenarios. It was fun to watch you play! I'm glad you enjoyed it. LnLT is a great game system. You might try the digital version if you're hesitant to shell out yet for a boxed game.
Great, glad you enjoyed it! I've pretty much convinced myself to be honest... I think it's great that LNL offer so many different ways to enjoy the games, but I'll probably stay away from digital - half the fun is getting away from screens and pushing some cardboard around!
Thanks for the review. Have been thinking of buying this and was impressed with the inclusion of counters and maps.
Thanks for watching! It surprised me how much variety was in the book - it's not the deepest game but I've got a fair few plays out of it. If you like the theme then you can get a lot of entertainment for a low price
Would you share your STL's? I use a similar jig, but it is a little small. Your's looks nicer.
Of course! It's already up on Thingiverse, hope it works well for you. Also have my ASL turn phase wheel up there (look at my other designs) - that's definitely worth printing if you have some magnets, it's awesomely useful when playing Counter jig: www.thingiverse.com/thing:6216392
If americans control >31 hill hexes by end of turn 4 its an automatic victory
≥30 hexes, but yeah - didn't even get to the end of Turn 4 here. The Germans still had their turn to play, but getting 11 of those hill breeds back under their control was practically impossible!
OMG OMG OMG keep on going... keep on going, please!!!! I only play on VASSAL and love seeing these... plus yes we all played battletech and SFB. In fact we just played SFB last weekend.
I'll definitely keep going! Glad that SFB still gets some love - a friend of mine mentioned a passing interest recently so I've been going through the Cadet Training Handbook as a refresher... Might make a video about it at some point
OMG I remember those dice... SPI dice are the best dice... I have about 50 of them. I called them back in the day and bought 25 yellow and 25 white... best thing I ever bought. everyone knows those dice.
These dice came from some random games warehouse, I ordered a kilo of random dice, and these were in there. Along with a huge set for a D1000, some with runes on, and a strange orange die where every single face is blank, except for a single 4. Still no idea where that one came from lol
thank you for the clipped counters... my OCD thanks you as well. Great job, keep it up. Also, of course the gun breaks... it always breaks it seems when I get anything with a gun.
Thanks! Yeah, clipped counters are a must - takes up time but makes everything look nicer and last longer
Very cool.
Cheers!
tanks already? impressive
I may not be skilled with the other rules yet, but I understand them well enough after 25 scenarios or so hahaha I'll probably pay this one again after a scenario with tanks and infantry, I was constantly rechecking the counter diagram to remind myself about how to read ground pressure, target size etc
Ah so that's how its done!
It's not the most complicated thing in the world, but I saw someone online using just normal printer paper for their print & play games, so something had to be done!!!
Nice grab
Very happy to have all the "core" Starter Kit bits now... But the completionist side of me is still on the lookout for Decision at Elst, if I can ever find an affordable copy!
I did some work on expansion pack #2. I hope you enjoy it.
Cool, what did you do?
i have this remake P500'd hope it comes out soon
This classic version is great fun, I think the new one could be awesome with the extra maps and event paragraphs, I'll definitely have to try and get it
Tea time
I may have to turn in my British passport - I much prefer coffee
Old School
A few grams of PLA is much cheaper than one of those Oregon Laminations devices, especially with transatlantic shipping costs!!!
Plus, I like the irregular octagon look
@@CategorySolo yeah I got my laminator cutter as part of the advanced squad leader bundle deal not sure I would have paid 60 bucks for it
I need to try this one
I'll be trying again this weekend... But actually defending/attacking the hill as I should have been all along!
I would have setup both sides very differently, and I shall when I replay this next time!
simple, get a bigger sheet and then have each corner a coffee cup... poof, job done
Would still be away from the board though, I don't think I could live with the ambiguity of positions!
they are extras for the axis and allies units. i would just put them with the japanese and minors
That's just the tip of the iceberg! There's Minor/Chinese & Minor/Commonwealth as well! I just liked having all my nation-specific counters in the same cases - these have now had to go in my "general info counters" case. But it doesn't sit right with my organisation!!!
