West Coast Traffic Signals
Канада
Добавлен 12 авг 2019
Hello, I film traffic signals! Well, it's a bit more than that. Road transportation is an interest of mine (road design, signs, signals, etc.). I like to showcase different intersections on my channel, showing good things about them, as well as pointing out areas that need changes to improve safety.
New Phasing! - Highway 1 at Helmcken Interchange (View Royal)
The cabinet and controller have been replaced. Not all of the loop detectors have been connected yet so most of the phases are set to recall for the time being.
They also need to install “Transit Priority Signal” signs. As the bus driver at 6:14 wasn’t going during the priority phase!

Signal Update - Keating X Rd at Central Saanich Rd (Central Saanich)

Back in August 2024, there was a temporary signal pole in place for westbound traffic: ruclips.net/video/Zi5WgCSBi1U/видео.htmlsi=x6JIF0jAU3tA-Tce They’ve since replaced it with a new permanent pole. Also, they’ve installed new bases on the other corners.
Lagging Pedestrian Interval in Sidney
Просмотров 144День назад
The theory behind the lagging pedestrian interval is that by allowing through traffic to establish their right of way first, it prevents anybody from turning into the crosswalk. In practice, it can lead to some less than ideal situations. For example, somebody turning right from the main road will see the light turn green and expect pedestrians to start crossing right away. But after a few seco...
Upgraded Signal - Shelbourne St at Pear St (Saanich)

They have an LPI in both directions (including the main road, which is fine). Though I wish they had dedicated bicycle signal heads that would be green during the LPI (so that cyclists can also get a head start). Also, the main road LPI could be shortened to 3 seconds, as the side street is quite narrow (lanes are only 3.1 meters wide). So it only takes pedestrians about 3 seconds to cross a la...
Longer Countdown Times - Highway 14 at Sooke River Rd (Sooke)
Просмотров 16714 дней назад
0:25 The controller backed up to service the left turn phase again (had to go to all-red first to avoid a yellow trap) but the left turning vehicle turned during the yellow so there was no longer a call on the left turn phase. So it just went back to the highway thru phases. It’s odd it backed up with there already being a side street call before the highway ped countdown hit zero. I guess it h...
Longer Countdown Times - Jacklin Rd at Jenkins Ave/Kelly Rd (Langford)

There’s a seniors living place on the corner, so the countdowns were extended to make sure seniors have enough time to cross. Older video of this intersection, showing the previous countdown times: ruclips.net/video/-FRFDWvf-m8/видео.htmlsi=FOUTcffYQLuCEKxz

Seems overkill for a temporary signal! Though it will probably be in place for a few years. Hopefully they can re-use some of the hardware!

Older Dialight Pedestrian Modules - Island Hwy at Wilfert Rd (View Royal)
Просмотров 14728 дней назад
The older Dialight Hand/Man modules were nice to see! But yeah, rest in walk or Ped re-service should be in place here considering the cycle length is fairly long. The countdown times could use a bump up as well, as they were probably calculated with the older standard of 1.2 m/s for walking speed. Also, the side street could benefit from a Leading Pedestrian Interval as most traffic from Wilfe...
Ambulance Getting Pre-Emption along Sooke Rd
Просмотров 775Месяц назад
The pre-emption is siren-based. It triggered the pre-emption at 1:15, even though the ambulance didn’t turn left heading that way. I guess the sensor still picked up the siren, since the ambulance was close by at the adjacent intersection.
BRAND NEW JSF RRFB’s - Langford Pkwy at Westshore Pkwy Roundabout (Langford)

The crosswalk used to have circular yellow flashers. This is a busy multi-lane roundabout and the crosswalks are notorious for drivers not yielding to pedestrians. So the RRFB’s should hopefully help improve things!

Nice long pedestrian-clearance interval though!
Nice
Is there an exclusive ped phase in Sidney?
@@outcrasherr No, unfortunately not
My understanding of this signal is that all 3 intersections run off one controller and favour the flow to and from the ferry terminal which is designated as a highway. They detect and adapt to ferry rushes. The extra lenses on those displays are interesting. I would bet there used to be a crosswalk there. There's a quirk in the BC MVA Regs that says all normal traffic control signals must have all 3 lenses. The city of Vancouver has violated that regulation in at least two locations.
1:42 interesting ped-vehicular combo mount too!
It looks good so far!
The cuckoo signal at the end made me think...wait thats weird...
Nice! ☺️
Love seeing 3Ms
But the left-turn phase is protected-permissive, so what about it risks creating the yellow trap?
The opposing left turn is permissive-only. So if the controller didn't go to all-red when backing up to re-service the protected left turn phase, then opposing left turners could get trapped.
@@WestCoastTrafficSignals ah, that would do it! Thank you!
30 seconds! Wow - generous!
Reminds me of upstate ny
That pedestrian button sign is extremely thin!
awesome!
Has one of the poles been changed from a type 4 to a type 4A too?
The 4A was actually a new install. The signal pole used to be there. But they moved the signal pole further back and added the 4A in 2017-2018, as they added a crosswalk on that leg.
Must be one of the old Peek LMD-8000 controllers, because the newer ones flash the arrows faster than that...
@@davidpedersen1757 Yep it is!
Temporary but a permanent looking install!
My thoughts exactly. Looks nice though!
I'm 100% against turns being allowed across active crosswalks at signals.
Dangerous stroad, at least there's a median refuge island, that definitely does make it better, safer, and more convenient, along with less ugly.
You have found the jackpot of jackpots... a traconex speaker. It is like Wilcox's twin, but very rare in the US. Those things can only be found in Pittsburgh PA, Concord CA and Salt Lake City. It looks differently from a Wilcox, like an extra hole row.
For those of us who live here, remember when that was all trees and rock? Colwood-Langford is nothing like it was in 1990.
Very strange setup! Not a fan of the louvers and being able to see conflicting displays! Also no slow flashing green here either? I agree that this should just be a full signal with the arrows like you mentioned. Also having proper logic to call up the next crossing.
I guess they don’t want to do a slow flashing green as drivers turning left might mistake as an advanced left. They could put the through signals on overlaps that flash, but put the left turn signal on a separate overlap that doesn’t flash. And yeah, that new auxiliary the put in really needs to be louvered.
Chatterton @ Quadra used to have one too! I was always mesmerized by it...
So they ARE adding fully-protected left-turn signals! Interesting! Thanks for filming these! I wouldn't know about this otherwise!
Neat seeing another flashing right arrow! I last crossed that intersection in mid-2023 and I wasn't aware it had been updated like that!
No way! I've been through that intersection several times - awesome to see the incandescent WALK aspects still in use! Is it an MoTI-owned intersection too? Because that would make it especially unique... (also, the protected interval of the arrow seemed pretty short... )
I think it used to be MoTI but they downloaded Highway 19A to the City of Parksville in the mid to late-2000’s.
Type M?! Seems overkill given the length! Would a Type L + 3LE + signal arm not have worked I wonder...
A protected-permissive/advance phase for Mann westbound might have made more sense given how there's almost never traffic going eastbound. It's like what they did at Royal Oak and Falaise too.
Always fun seeing those DEVPES (Directional Emergency-Vehicle Pre-Emption Signals - apparently that's what they're called) in action!
Good lighter! Although the novax is very loud.
Amazing 🔥🚦
That’s wicked that your ambulances get preemption. Only fire trucks get it here.
Police can trigger it too, since it’s sound based. Only caveat with it being siren based is that it can get false calls in some areas, especially areas with construction activity as rock chipping hits the same frequency!
what a weird setup
something is wrong with one of the wilcox speakers
I meant the one Wilcox speaker 😂
This also has wilcox.
Wilcox!
I heard duncan has some Wilcox speakers, and some very rare speakers too!
Looks good! Love those poles they use and the colour!
They're going full Vancouver styles! They need to update that to the Canadian Melody!
I'm not sure that's a good thing though - the solid-green interval that most of those signals have is a useful warning feature. I recently asked Vancouver why they don't have one and have yet to hear back from them about it.
@@davidpedersen1757 I think Vancouver has done it that way for decades. Not sure why they decided to buck the trend!
1:07 Hillside and Gosworth Signal phasing without the Solid Green interval was caught on camera.
Any speaker that has no black circles and lines, is a Wilcox.
Top tier stuff! Keep at it <3
In this economy
I would serve the ped overlap first, carryover to phase 4 and if there’s no phase 4 call, carryover to phase 6. It can skip the LPI during the carryover too if the button isn’t pushed! I’ll show some examples that I use.
Amazing video
“Cross street with Caution”
Do you know when bike signal heads will be added to the BC MVA?
@TrafficExplorerON I have no idea! It’s taking way too long!
8 8 12
That signal in the video is getting replaced.
I saw signals like that in Esquimalt too! Lots of blank out signs and preemption sequences set up but with no trains!
Yeah I know! It’s sad to see all of the crossing infrastructure sit there but no movement has been made to get trains running along there. Honestly I think at this point it’s a lost cause. Better off building an entirely new grade-separated passenger service between Langford and Victoria!
@ thag would be sick. And rail to a lot of the towns up island too! Instead of just that single lane highway!
