The writers screwed the pooch with this episode. Beennet actually had a happy life with his wife, odds are he had kids and grandchildren with her too, but he was so used to being along he couldn't fathom how he could be happy with someone and conspired to undo it.
Yeah, there’s no denying that Older Bennett kinda screwed himself over on that part.
