An Army At Dawn (2nd Ed.) - Gameplay Part 2
I'll be interested in watching some gameplay, thanks!
Thanks for the video.
It appears the game has sold well, but the development wasn’t very good and there are quite a few rules lapses.
Fixed with errata or rules Q&A? Looks great.
@@RommelsAsparagus I don’t know, we gave up.
Outstanding review and i have ordered this game from Compass during their holiday sale. Liked the way you actually walked through a quick overview of the charts and scenarios in a relatively short video. Very well done and much appreciated.
Thanks!
sorry, but light horse artillery is not just "basically calvary". Perhaps, you just meant for movement's sake ?
It's been a while, but yes, that's likely what I meant.
Cool! I play this all the time! What a great game - one of my all time favorite PC games. It really captures the look and feel of Warhammer 40K. I just recently moved on to learning the Orcs ... they are so much fun. I hope they continue to come out with new stuff for this - factions and campaigns hopefully. P.S. - I just noticed ... are you forgetting to use your Empower Surge ability?
Awesome! Yes, this is my favorite Warhammer 40k game too. And yes, I did forget to use the Empower Surge!
@@HexedAndCountered Don't worry - I forget sometimes too ... that's why I noticed! 😆 I still buy all those HQ special powers and always forget to use those!
Just also wanted to mention, this game has the best written rulebook in the history of wargaming. It's a very innovative system never before seen and explained with the clearest rulebook ever published.
Thanks, I agree! It's written in a way that makes the system very approachable, which is great!
@HexedAndCountered People now talk about the "Jerry White format" of rules because of this game.
I buy and learn the games, then pack them away and play them on vassal
That's what I've doing with really large games. I just don't have the tabletop space for some games.
Awesome video!
Thanks!
38:00 maximum drm is +4 or -4. Not +6
42:21 it is better to reaction fire first
15:42 Watch out! Pls read carefully the restrictions of Charge Order: generally you can't bypass nearest enemy unit, here the LI
10:03 remember the -2 drm for WC Ruppert
I really enjoyed the first video. Why doesn't this video have subtitles? Could you add them?
The subtitles are automatically generated by RUclips but this one seems to have stuck in "processing."
Well, I don't know if you finally did anything to make them appear (there they are!), but thanks, at the very least, for your attention (and for the video!)
34:50 if a Light Infantry unit with a current strength of one alone in a hex is attacked in Close Combat by anything other than another one strength point Light Infantry unit, it is automatically eliminated. (11.6)
When you move onto enemy artillery unit, you mark it as “captured” but do not remove it from play. It stays on the table as it can be recovered later by the original owner, in which case you’d flip the counter to the “disabled” side. Captured guns are worth 2x as many points as disabled ones. Both are done firing for the rest of the battle though. (10.8.8)
26:12 hedges do not block line of sight between units that stand on the opposite sides of the same hex side (14.4). The cav unit would have received reaction fire several times for moving as it did.
23:05 I think you got that interception completely backwards. It’s the Parliamentary cav unit that is attacking in this case. The modifiers would be -2 for morale, +2 for momentum, -1/+1 for pistols, +1 for unit size, for a total of +1. With the die roll of 1 the attacker (the intercepting cav unit) would have been broken, not the royalist cav.
“5.6 Line of Sight (LOS) does not affect Orders in any way.” so the Cav on the royalist right wing would have to move towards those musketeers.
General comment: Thanks a lot for your step by step video. 🎉 The M&P series is great but the rules are really fiddly. I assume you forgot to use the AC EVERY activation. It is one very important feature to think ahead (AC may do only one action per activation. So moving hinders all other action including drms for orders change, continuation.)
Thanks for the tips!
45:18 don't forget to flip Fired arty 😊
41:23 why not trying to change orders?
35:12 at max 2 continuation
30:13 ...except if stacked/adjacent to AC (one one unit).
29:43 rolled 3 -1 for cavalry (I assume it is) = 2 = Preemption succeded
23:27 reaction fire of arty is limited to Grazing Fire Range
20:51 pls note the decision for interception must be made immediately (not after the second LI move)
14:47 if you move the AC to a hex where next activation will be a WC he could modify continuation.
17:48 isn't Fielding a cavalry wing? Then there is a -1 drm. On a rolled 8 this doesn't matter 😊
I have a couple of those (Comancheria and Antietam) so will be looking for more on those. I was going to get the next two you picked up from Worthington's sale (Shiloh and Seven Days) but the shipping turned me off.
I hear you on the shipping - it can be a real killer!
Excellent playthrough, clearly explained, I look forward to seeing more of your stuff. Would you do a video on Worthington Games "One Hour World War 2" and "Gettysburg: A time for Heroes" ?Thank you for this one really clarified a few rules regarding this game.
Thanks! Right now I don't have the two games you mentioned but if I pick them up I will definitely do some videos.
@@HexedAndCountered Sounds great, looking forward to seeing those videos.
Comancheria I also just got. Would love to see your play.
That's one I definitely want to play and will likely be a sooner rather than later one. Thanks!
Great lineup ahead, Joe! I'm most excited that you'll be filiming reviews. You have a lot to offer gamers looking for insight on potential plays and buys. Even in your playthroughs you often throw out an observation or insight gleaned while playing that I often think is more insightful than a lot of other YT reviewers get to in their formal review videos. Being able to watch you play and see WHY you have the perceptions you do will really offer a great overall perspective of a game.
Thanks Tom!
Hapsburg Eclipse brilliant game and may invest in Ottoman Sunset.
They're pretty high on my list of "Solo Sunday" candidates and I may try to join them together for the playthrough.
great games!
It's a big list. Always trying to decide what to do next, which I guess is a great problem to have.
@@HexedAndCountered It's true - there are a lot of them :) But they all seem great to me, so we'd love to see a review on any of them of your choice.
I am interested in hearing your thoughts on Banish All Their Fears. It seems some have complained about the rules. I think it has a lot to do with it being so different from Musket & Pike. Thanks for the look ahead.
I'm very tempted to do it next while Musket & Pike is still so fresh in my mind.
Hi, I'd love to see something on "Front Towards Enemy" as not heard of this one before...
That's one I had been looking at for a while. It will be interesting to see how it compares to two of my favorite squad-level Vietnam games: '65 from Flying Pig and Lock N Load Tactical Heroes of the Nam.
@HexedAndCountered plus there's another one releasing just now, Purple Haze from Phalanx (solo game)
Yes! I have that one too so I will have some video on it, hopefully in January.
@@HexedAndCountered I gave this one a pass, not a fan of solo games😁
10:10 You should *definitely* use your advance points to increase stats. The game expects you to do that. That's what they are for.
Thanks! I need to play this some more, it's been a while.
I just received Comancheria as well and I am super keen to play this.
It looks like a fantastic game and it feels like I've been waiting for it for a long time so I am in the same boat as you.
@ yes, agreed; I have heard from several people that the automata / AI for your opponent is best in class in this game. I hope you enjoy your playthrough and glad to see GMT shipping some of these games that crossed the P500 threshold a long time ago! 😂
Fascinating, many thanks. I visited the battlefield with my school about 50 years ago! As for this system, I've always felt there wasn't much decision making required of the players - little room for skill, cunning, etc. Just press the start button and the battle unfolds. It all seems a bit rigid. But I've not tried it and I'm happy to be proved wrong. Looking forward to episode 2. Andrew
Thanks Andrew! This battle is somewhat skewed in favor of the Royalist faction but there is room for the players to have impact via decision-making. For example, the Royalists will need to decide when and with whom to attack specific areas of the Parliamentarian wings, when and how to use their artillery, etc. The Parliamentary forces will need to decide on how to employ their own guns to best effect (timing on how close to allow the Royalists to get before firing is part of this) as well as clever use of their fewer, and lesser quality, calvary forces via interception especially. Part two will get into some of these things. Thanks again! Joe
@@HexedAndCountered Intriguing! Look forward to it. Andrew
You're using the same force as the first battle, in the same week? I thought the rules stated you could only use a commander once per week?
I had to go back and look at the rules because it's been a while. It doesn't specifically state that you can't use a commander more than once, only that you can't assign unfit or wounded commanders. Thanks!
Good job Joe
Thank you!
I've had Musket and Pike for a while now. I set up quite a few of the battles, looked at it with lustful eyes, and then retreated intimidated by the apparent complexity. Your playthrough was so lucid and well explained, though, that I feel able to get it down from the shelf and have another crack! Great vid, many thanks!
Thank you, it's great to hear that my video helped! I had heard how complex the rules were and that kept me away from them for a while. And it did take a careful read or two of the rules to feel like I got it. I think it helped that I had recently been playing Great Battles of History - some of the rules are similar, though obviously modified to fit the era of musketry.
MUST RESIST ... I've never bought into this system as of yet ... ...
I enjoy it, but can easily understand the desire to avoid adding another series to the pile!
Good to see this actually being played with the new edition. I am trying to learn this at the moment. Looking forward to the next video! Many thanks!
Thanks - Hope you enjoy it!
Exellent, thank you. There are not enough Musket and pike playthroughs out there. Please carry on!
Thanks! And yes, there really aren't many playthroughs out there. There'll be more content from me for this one.
Well done, and thanks, I like this series, hav them all.
Nice! I was aware of the series, but tended to stick to the old, familiar WWII games. Very happy I decided to branch out. Have the 2nd Dual Pack on P500 & hope it's a sooner rather than later arrival. Thanks!
Is there something you have to do to determine initiative, like for the first battle? Maybe I missed that. Really enjoyed this BTW!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. Initiative always starts with the human player. It seems like the scenarios are designed so that the human player going first makes sense. In scenario two, you play as the government against the rebels, and it makes sense there for the government forces to go first.
I can’t wait to get my copy. Looks great! Thanks for the overview!
Hope you enjoy it - there's a lot of game to play, that's for sure!
I like the сounters from their previous releases much better. They fit the clipping perfectly, while the current ones, apparently cheaper to produce, are repulsive :(
I don't think I have anything with their older counters so I don't have a frame of reference.
@@HexedAndCountered Well, as you've already noticed even this game has counters from previously released game (Road to Berlin, 2005) that AP is just updating by creating new scenarios to the existing ones and adding new counters. Only their new counters have side nibs. In all their previous games, the counters had corner nibs. This game features both old and new counters.
