June 2, 2024. A rat snake entered our Wood Duck nest box and ate four eggs before we got it out. A week later the remaining 13 baby ducks hatched and fledged with their mom.

14 baby wood ducks left the nest box and followed mom into the woods and canals behind our house. Initially, two hens were laying in this nest, so some of the eggs did not hatch. This happens every year. A normal brood is 12-13. The hen incubates the eggs for 30 days, typically leaving the nest for 1-2 hours each day. They leave the nest one day after hatching. It is not deadly but is fearful of me and is acting defensively.
Interesting that you have a pet mallard. Here in Australia they are considered a (minor) ecological pest

We have a few that like to congregate in our front yard. I heard a bunch of crows going crazy, right outside, went out to check it out, and there was a hawk with a duck pinned underneath it, tearing out neck feathers. I was able to scare it off just in time.
