Driving my vintage Willys Jeep to Kansas State University
Sort of. This isn't a VA website misleading people issue, it's a definitions issue. We're looking at a "flight training" tab on the VA website, the colleges that people are looking to attend are NOT a "flight training" place. Two different things. The website is referring to using GI Bill benefits specifically at a flight training place, not a college. I'm not sure why people are saying it needs to be 141... You CAN do Part 61 (I've done it, PPL to CFII all at Part 61). Call the schools VRO (Veteran Resource Office), they will know, they deal with flight fees and aviation students all the time. Ignore WEAMS, it's focused on "flight training" (as previously mentioned) and does not include colleges that take VA money for their flight fees. Find a college with an aviation program and call the VRO. Schools losing flight program VA funding is typically due to the programs having too high a percentage of veteran students. If the percentage goes over 85% veterans, the VA pulls funding for that program. It's called the 85/15 rule. This has happened to schools multiple times when too many veterans are saturating a program. If you hear about colleges losing VA funding for a program, this is most likely why.
Lot's of questions about how this works... The school's handling of the fees is what matters. There's no reason to fund parts of the training yourself if you don't want to. It's all college dependent. If the school has flight fees under their normal school fees the VA will pay for the "fees". The VA will pay for all public school fees associated with a degree giving program, either Part 61 or part 141, the part doesn't matter. The easiest way to do this for free is going to a college that offers aviation and also with a college that has funds allocated in such a way that the VA will pay. A school that says "The VA won't pay for XYZ course" is ignorant. That's a school allocation of funds/fees problem, not a VA problem. If you don't want to go to college, then you'll need to pay for some stuff yourself. Otherwise, find a college that works with the fees and get everything for free while you can.
So low the tires are spinning
Well said. Liberty is a crap shoot. Veterans should stay away even if they do end up getting reapproved.
GI Bill paid for my PPL at Sinclair college in Dayton. Working on commercial now, it totally can be done.
So. there's where my Wheaties come from
That's the way to fly.
I'm always heard there wasn't anything in Kansas. Now it's confirmed.
That's just one part of Kansas. There are also trees, hills, rivers, lakes, green fields, rock formations, and many other things to see. But you just go on ahead thinking Kansas is full of nothing and stay out of our beautiful state. We don't need too many people crowding our wide open spaces.
@@zonoz7135 hey now. Let’s be nice. Maybe he has a cool airplane to come flying with.

After using GI bill for ppl and then dropping out to fast track flight training and a vocational school can I use my GI bill for the vocational school too or is it void since I dropped out of the college after getting my ppl?
@@p0zyrPB is the vocational school covered in the WEAMS? If so, then yes. If not, then it depends. It depends on if you’re attending the vocational school for aviation or something else.
@@Barstool_cub_driver thank you! All of your stuff is seriously helping me, I’m in a real unique situation I think and I don’t really know who to ask for answers. I have to decide between doing skillbridge with flex air and incurring around 30k in debt because I will pay out of pocket for ppl (but I’ll get my commercial pilots license faster) or going to Kansas state university and getting my pilots license through them. But I’m not sure how long it will take? And do I need to do other classes or can I only do flight stuff? If I go with flex air and use the vr and e I’ll have to worry about housing costs while that vr and e gets approved and I’m not sure how long that will take either
@@p0zyrPB you should NOT ever have to pay out of pocket for PPL. Find me on IG and I’ll help you a bit more with your situation

Nice
Full video would be great🙏🤔😎
So you use the GI bill and start with part 141 school and after successfully getting your private license you switch to a part 61 school to continue your training using VRE am I understanding you correctly?
No
Opposite, part 61 to get your PPL (might be out of pocket) then a part 141 and use the GI Bill
First of all, huge thanks for the videos. You’re the only one explaining all this. What I’m not understanding is why do you recommend switching from the post 9/11 after the ppl and not using that all the way through the degree? I plan on getting that 10% for tnitus (former navy aircraft electrician so should be easy), just haven’t looked into all that yet. Never heard of the VRE until this.
9/11 GI bill has a limit to flight training. It’ll give you only the lowest MINIMUM average for flight training. Whereas VR&E will give you the full amount needed to complete your training. Additionally, VR&E will give you any additional equipment you may need, like a headset, iPad, or garmin/foreflight. Gi bill will not give you any of those things. Also, once you complete the VR&E program, your GI bill can be refunded fully, giving you an option to pursue more flight training - like seaplane (southern seaplane in Louisiana accepts GI bill).
@@Barstool_cub_driver wow! That is amazing info especially the refund I really need to do a deep dive into this. My plan as of right now is to enroll in California Aeronautical University in January using the GI bill until my disability/Vre goes through. I have no idea how long that is going to take. From my understanding I won’t have to pay anything until February 2026 so I’m hoping that gives me enough time to get the VRE going. Plus I can take advantage of a $4k BAH. Have you heard anything about CAU? Again, thanks man I would have never thought this was possible without you I owe you big time.
So basically if I don’t want to get a degree I need to get my ppl and pay for it myself. Then use my go bill to go to a 141 school
No, you can go to a college and take PPL, then drop out.
Are you able to get your commercial pilot license with a VA disability rating?
Yes you can.
Please review 14 CFR 91.117 sir. 😅
Shit, that’s hauling ass for a J-3!! 😂🤣
hi, great content. also recently got out of the army. was using my gi bill for another major and wanted to switch over. my instructor told me to apply for vrne asap. well I did and days later got my first appointment and my councellor said I qualify and chatted a little bit about pilot training. she said its going to be hard because her superior will go through with fine tooth comb. well now i found your video and realize i put the car before the horse. I am already in the process of getting my class 1 physical. I am at the point of doing homework of schools etc. any further help is greatly appreciated.
Hi David! Appreciate your comment. Schools like: K-state UND Ohio state Vermont state And others allow you to use your GI bill for private pilot. If your counselor approves the PPL course at a school, I’d take that. If they deny it, switch back to chapter 33, get private done, and then switch back to 31. Also, check out my newest video it has the CFR’s to enable you to check everything AFTER private without seeking a bachelor’s degree.
I’ll ride a bike 130mph but I won’t get in a plane lol.
Wouldn’t mind having one, but damn sure not paying the $7K they want for one. Absolutely retarded. 🤦🏻♂️
Does the GI Bill / VRE cover the full 250 minimum hours for cpl? Or does it tap out at 12k?
Does it have to be a bachelors or can it be an associate’s
No it does not. Associates degrees are fine, you just need to find a school that either allows VR&E or post 9/11.
I asked Liberty University but to start the program they are asking for my PPL and them start. 😢
I’m at liberty right now using my GI Bill, you don’t need your PPL to start but the VA doesn’t cover the PPL anymore according to Liberty. You might be able to use VR&E for it though. You can also use education loans from FAFSA thou
LU is kind of a crap program. I would watch my other videos that show how to find a college that will cover your PPL.
@@doc_pyro_av8r105 Sounds like a school problem, not a VA funding problem.
Thank you for your service!
This makes AK47 look like a squirt gun
I’m active duty and trying to start my PPL. I don’t want to wait until I get out to go to a Part 141 school full-time. If get my PPL before I get out, I’ll have a head star and I’ll use my GI bill for the rest of my training. Do you know of any way I can cut costs since I’ll be paying out of pocket?
Study and don’t repeat any lessons. Your other option is to find a school (part 61) that offers flying lessons in a light sport aircraft (LSA) for your PPL,something like an RV-12. Additionally you can get your PPL checkride covered via the VA - see the WEAMS video (part 2) I posted.
@@Barstool_cub_driver thanks a lot for the tip, I’ll look into it.
I'm active duty doing the same thing
@@Peteiredale8812 cool man, how far along are you?
Have you heard of Matta aviation
No I haven’t.
What a beauty.
I'm looking at WEAMS now and am wondering if the flight school has to be part of an actual university for VRE, and not just a regular flight academy.
See video part 1, but to answer directly.. yes. VR&E will only cover things if the flight school is part of a college, if you want PPL to be included. Post 9/11 will cover the COURSE of instrument and commercial COMBINED 60%. Then they’ll also cover the check rides. $2200 Per ride and it reduces 1 month of benefits.

Fantastic info brother, I’m EASing from the marines soon and I’ve been searching the last couple months trying to formulate a plan. Would’ve never known about Weams otherwise
Im about to retire with 20 years in. I already have my degree via TA, and want to use my GI bill for private pilot. I was always told the GI bill would only cover upgrades to the license after already having a PPL. If I understand you correctly, I have to find a college that offers a PPL as part of their curriculum? Does the flying cost extra or is it part of the tuition? I dont want to earn another degree .. Just wanna fly.
You would enroll in a college that has PPL as part of their curriculum. You’d have a flight lab (where you’d fly) and a ground school class (prepare you to take the written). You could take the class and the lab, then “drop out” of college.
@@Barstool_cub_driver Interesting idea. I'll look into it. If that's possible that's sounds like a perfect fit for me.
@@Barstool_cub_driver How did you avoid (or did you?) paying back GI Bill payments to the VA?? Thanks!
@@historysattic9112 you don’t have to pay back anything to your GI bill?
I used the G.I. Bill to get my commercial, CFI, CFII,
How? Did you have a degree before?
Did it cover your PPL too? What’s the process?
@brayaniraheta8333 find a part 141 school that GI bill accepts and get your private before hand
Hey Brother, It has been my dream to get my license and possibly even do this as a career. BUT! I can not find a collage around Virginia that says they include privet pilots license, some programs say they do offer it but I have to pay for it myself, everyone that I have called has told me so far that I have to pay for that on my own. HOW do I find a collage that will let you do what you have done with the GI Bill? I am determined and want to do this.
Go check out the “RTAG” group on FB. They have a file on their page that has EVERY part 141 flight school in the country that has a flight program. It will also include if they have an A&P program. It will show which schools accept GI bill for your PPL and which don’t. If you need further help, follow me on instagram @barstool_cub_driver and send me a DM. I’ll help you.
@@Barstool_cub_driver with your approach of doing the PPL at a 141 with the GI Bill, how long did it take?
@@jpo7008 it took me 6 months. That includes bad weather and me canceling a couple lessons due to family obligations and being sick.
@@Barstool_cub_driver thanks for the reply, thats not so bad considering that the VA is covering most. I have seen coments from other people taking up to 9 months at this school for ppl.
Liberty University includes the PPL but you might have to use FAFSA loans to supplement it
When using VR&E, do you get the BAH rate or the subsistence allowance (~$800)?
You’ll get whatever is higher.
