Carolina Reef Experience Coral Show!
You're suggesting targeting 9-12 dKh ? Good coral growth can be achieved at 8-9 dKh which is also much easier to keep stable. At 11 dKh corals become increasing brittle and at 12 dKh exceedingly so. Check with any of the well known, experienced corals farmer like World Wide Corals, Tidal Gardens or Uniquecorals. They'll recommend a daytime pH of 8.1 - 8.3 and 8-9 dKH.
I agree you can get great growth with alk between 7-9 dkh, my recommendation is if you have low pH, running your alk higher can help to bring up your pH in certain circumstances. We run our alkalinity at 8-9 but we also have no issue maintaining a pH of 8.3 in our systems because of our industrial AC unit. There are plenty of ways to grow coral and I know several SPS dominant tanks that run higher dkh in order to maintain a higher pH.
Kalkwasser and a recirculating CO2 scrubber works for me.
I began slow dripping kalkwasser 24/7 and added a CO2 scrubber. My pH 7.5 to averaging 8.6 during the day and 8.4 at night. I have seen insane levels of growth and health in the corals of my tank.
That's awesomne I'm glad it worked so well for you!
i wont lie, stopped watching after 2:50. shoulda just made the video all about grand paly
Reep octo makes a lot more than skimmers
They definitely do but are most known for their skimmers
Thank you for the great content!!!
Good video except the skimmer part. That’s a bold statement to make about Eshoppes. They actually do make a great skimmer, The S-200. Also there’s plenty of other companies that make multiple aquarium products with excellent skimmers, which I own as well. Hopefully you really look into that. I felt that was irresponsible on your part. But other than that a good video.
Thanks for the compliment. I understand what you are saying, I have used dozens of skimmers and was trying to make a general rule of thumb for purchasers. In regards to eshopps I'm sure there are a few models that work well. In my experience, I have noticed a lot of issues with the adjustable water baffle getting stuck from things like sponges and barnacles growing on the mechanism causing them to not spin well. I see this as a design flaw compared to other brands like Reef Octopus that enclose this mechanism to make it less likely to fail.
Great video always with the great guides. My tank has been doing way better since I found actual reefers like you guys.
Minor thing but they are not soft corals- they are their own family just called zoanthids!
Yes they are! I didn’t want to confuse people in such a short format but I did discuss it in our longer Zoa Care video!
Did you say Phosphate .03 to 1.0 ppm? You mean 0.03 to 0.1?
Zoas can do well in phosphates all the way up to 1 ppm but might not display the best color or have the best growth. They are able to grow in a very wide range of conditions as long as they stay stable!
My first tank size was a 48 gal Fiji cube… pretty happy with it so far
If I had to do it over again, I would do a rimmed tank… just gives you extra comfort long term and is worth it imo
Tried contacting you guys on instagram regarding my order missing a frag and haven’t heard back from you guys since June 7th.
Just got my haul today! Can wait till quiting time!
Hope you enjoy it!
Can I keep a rock flower anatomy on a 13 1/2 gallon tank? Thank you.
Absolutely as long as it doesn’t get too close to another coral as it can sting other corals.
Just wondering, do you dose magnesium to get 1500? If not, what salt do you use?
We do dose magnesium
@@queencitycorals thanks for the info. I have a small 30 gallon reef using Red Sea pro salt. I saw a video from a channel called fragbox discussing the importance of magnesium around 1500 especially if one has problems with LPS (me lol). I guess I'm stuck dosing unless I can find a salt that will keep me around this level. So far so good since I started dosing last week 👍
Difference between "worth" and "exorbitanly priced". Coral frags are not "worth" $450+, especially when you just cut up old corals into pieces.
Prices in the hobby are set by hobbyists. I personally think you can find some gorgeous corals in our $15 section but some people prefer rarer corals that go for a higher price it all depends on what you’re into.
Very informative and helpful video for those who don’t take preventative measures to eradicate any possible pests. I happen to love torches and hammers and have several as of now. Subbed your channel. 👍
20:50 😮
There is a difference between precision and accuracy. If Hanna added a few more digits to your Alk tester, it might display 8.1065. That would be more precise. But if it is still +- a couple percent, it isn’t any more accurate. If ICP claims “precision down to parts per trillion” they are saying nothing about their accuracy.
Man it’s been known forever that ICP tests are a scam. It’s funny watching all these clowns waste $40 on them. Jake Adam’s spoke about that and aquabiomics being a waste of money years ago. Too many people who don’t know anything in this hobby repeating incorrect information and confusing new comers. Glad you made a video further stating what a waste of money these tests are.
Uranium occurs naturally at low levels
Yes it is, what was confusing was that both ICP tests supposedly had the same resolution and yet one showed it and the other didn’t.
@@queencitycorals ah right. They need regular calibration to be totally accurate
Just received my first ICP test back a couple days ago. Everything came back as expected on the major . I did the test just to see where my other trace elements are at . So far everything looks good . But I did have high iodine cuz I was dosing two drops a day into my tank and now being elevated , I can slow down on the dosing. So overall , it helped me see where my tank sits …..
Do you shut off your protein skimmer and uv sterilizer
We sometimes turn off the Protein skimmer but always leave the UV on.
Enjoy your channel and the info man. Just subscribed.... Question for you... I've heard / known for a long time now that manganese is a goni saver which I've historically had trouble with and since buying some of the aquaforest Mn, I've had better results dosing 5ml a week for roughly 145g. just recently however I have seen them start to struggle. Obviously I need to increase. I saw a parkers reef video where a farmer with amazing goni suggested it dissipates out of the water quickly making icp not terribly helpful for that element. My question is, having repeatedly heard MN can be the difference maker, how much and how often do I dose for best results? Ty in advance for any insight.
My recent ICP test shows I have Zero Manganese in my system but my Gonis look great. I dose All For Reef just for my Gonis to be happy and with the ICP test showing Zero Manganese, I’m questioning if I need to dose Manganese on its own now?🤷♂️
I would just dose based on ICP testing as it goes down increase your dosage. I hope that helps
Glad you all picked out a true beginners tank for this series! Going to be fun to watch
Here are some reads if you want to go down the rabbit hole of ICP on R2R. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dFxPAyXhUtpOKlhFjDxnUpYSE_aKMDrUL0uB5C7nD58/edit?usp=sharing
I’ve never had luck with torches 😥
Best video I have seen on torches. High caliber video quality content as Tidal Garden. I just sub, liked and will share. Keep more videos like this coming. Thanks
Agreed. Been waiting for a video like this for a few years
Orange Rhodactis mushroom name at 1:53? Do you carry these? 🔥
Looking for to seeing you in your store soon and getting some great corals.
Me too!
Great in depth video my friends 🙌💯👏
Great video!!
what's the id of the gold torches at around 4:40 mark guys?
The ones in the front are a Holy Grail Banana Variant.
informative video, very straight forward. Keep it up bros
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
lol!!!!!!
Cheers for the vid. But your audio seems to be left channel only, I almost binned my headphones thinking they are broke 😅
Great video! Thanks for the info.
Lots of information here, thanks for the video.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the video ! Recently lost my NY Knicks torch after growing it out from 1 head to 5 heads. Don’t know what happened but it just melted away after all that growth 😭
Sorry to hear that, did you have any sort of changes in your water chemistry. Or did you recently introduce any new torches?
First
Paul is the nicest guy ever always ready to help out with good honest and well researched knowledge honestly I dnt go anywhere else
Paul is the BEST!!!!!
Very cool, I have often wondered how coral are “fed”. I just assumed it was like in the ocean, they just filtered the tank. Very cool to learn they must be fed.
Almost had me until tikity toko code
Nice meaty mix. Is the fluorescence really from amino acids? I have always wondered what the fluorescent component of the amino/coral nutrition mixes was? I know some sponges release fluorescein in the wild. I thought it was maybe added to give a consumers a visual cue on where the supplement/food was ending up in the system. Vitamin B2 is also fluorescent green. Also makes for a great way to visualize water flow in a system. Always enjoy the content. Keep up the good work.
Yes, it is Amino Acids, but it also is good for visualizing the food
Another great video guys!
Did you get footage of the mushroom TSA sold for 20k!!!???
I don’t know there is a really nice one at the end of part 2 though!
You did a really great job walking us through, thank you
Good vid,,can definitely tell dude is in to bounce mushrooms..wish he would have slowed down on the acros so us stick heads could get good look
