A Quick Sparring Technique for Seniors

The kick slips underneath at a diagonal from the floor to the obi ( belt). In most sparring bouts, kicks must be on or above the belt and this kick “rides” up the blind spot of the opponent. Also, the opponent’s arm is hiding the kick and by dropping close to the opponent, you have dropped your weight on your opponent and closed the gap simultaneously! All aboard! Heiko dachi is the first dachi (or stance) learned in Isshinryu. It is used in the Isshinryu Kihon, hence the “Kihon dachi” reference. Don't mean to come off harshly here but, If you are training in a method that focuses on empty hand striking and you DON'T want to hit a makiwara... You may want to take up something else... The Makiwara is Essential and Irreplaceable. Respectfully.

Thank you for this very nice explanation/interpretation Sensei Oshita! My question is: After the reinforced bending of the opponent's wrist, you step into their space and perform a quick punch before the downward backfist. In the traditional kata, its almost like this punch doesn't exist. I like it as a variation to the theme of the kata, but would you recommend not interpreting the original Seiunchin kata as including this punch but having the fist just out slightly in order to pull it back with full force in order to increase the power of the opposing arm's downward backfist? Does that make sense as I've said it?

It's good technique, i would like a little critique. When the lady had both hands grabbed, instead of moving side, why not place s good hard kick to the groin, he'll release he's grip, hit him on the chin. The 1st move the lady does has to cause pain to the guy. Take care and be well.

Women have much less strength than men generally, but they compensate with brains, where martial techniques learned give her advantage! Remember a lot of karate comes from white crane karate which was created by a female, I think to avenge the death of her father! Then man has one inch punch, women have smaller fists, where they can concentrate force into a much smaller area than an inch!

Those pads fell over by spirit! Old root doctor test, if you’re familiar with root doctors, they engage the spirit realm! Take a spoon by the tip of the handle between the forefinger and thumb, move the back of the spoon, the round part toward flowing water. No spirits, the spoon is deflected out, but if there’s spirit(s), they’ll push the round part of the spoon into the flow of water. Just an old root worker test to see if spirits were currently present!

Interesting. The way to break the leg is fine, but a stance with the knee over the toes will not work for me. Our Zenkutsu Dachi ( in Kyokushin) is much deeper. That is for building strength and opening/stretching the hips as much as possible. So we use the stance to build strenght, be more flexible, and of course build character. A low Zenkutsu Dachi over time is bloody painful, ha ha. So, in this low position, knee over toes will injure you knee. I teach my students to have the knee over the heel, and even move the foot just a little bit forward to save the knee, but still build the strength. Osu.

Good video. I've been doing similar using a brick wall for quite a few years now. Its a very good isometric exercise that believe it or not will add power to your vertical punches as well as toughen the striking points on your knuckles. Personally speaking I know that conditioned hands will do more damage than unconditioned hands when no gloves or hand wraps are worn in a real combat situation.

I have thought if Tatsuo maybe didn't pull on things from older karate practices that may have been weaned out as Karate leaned toward education, Olympics, etc. As boxing changed as a sport, which before boxers used liniments to toughen their fists, held their hands differently bareboxing, etc. ??????????????
