Working at Donut | Why James Left
Update 8/8/24: Today, I was told that some people working in automotive content have been harassed by a small number of their channel's audience who disagree with how they may have done their jobs. In the interest of caution, I have removed portions of this video that could potentially provide information to similar idiots.
What it was like working with James Pumphrey and why he left Donut Media to start his own channel @SpeeedCo . Go watch his Up To Speeed video about Donut, if you haven't. I'm not as nice as he was about the situation. I also talk about what goes into making a 2M view automotive video.

Просмотров 10 тыс.2 месяца назад
The reality of Donut Media's future is not what most gossip says it is. The truth is Donut's not dead yet. Not by a long shot. And truth is more important than saying what's popular. So this video discusses how RUclips channels manage and mismanage big changes by turning over audience, and includes some simple tips for automotive creators who are just starting out. If this is your first time he...
Why Everyone is Quitting BIG Automotive YouTube Channels // Donut, Hoonigan, CarThrottle
Просмотров 1,6 млн3 месяца назад
Why have so many automotive content creators quit big channels? Answers here! It’s not just the on-screen talent, it’s a ton of people behind the scenes, too. All those "Why I quit" videos aren't telling the whole story. Everyone making those still has too much skin in the game, and can't be completely honest. The information in this video is my opinion, based on my experience, but confirmed th...

The corporatization of YT/other content creation is a perfect parallel to all industries everywhere. If we all keep selling ourselves out to big corporations, we'll eventually find out that we have nothing left of value.

Why shouldn’t make a RUclips channel into a corporation!!!

I ask this in the least jerk way, if all these channels know what it's like when you bring big investors, then why do they sell? And who benefits from the sale? I asked this because I'm genuinely curious

I’m not interested in corporate media that’s not what RUclips was about. I’ve already unsubscribed and blocked doughnut media

Information is entertaining but education is knowledge. Noise pollution vs content. It’s easy to capture an audience but hard to keep them interested after so many seasons no different than tv shows.

Honestly our favorite channels never should have sold out in the first place. Hoonigan and most likely Donut were amazing channels on their own but everyone thinks more money is always better but corporate America has killed everything so this should have been expected, all while no raises came to those who actually are the brand. It reminds me of the 2008 car bailouts those companies should have been allowed to fail for terrible decisions and these channels should be allowed to fail even though I love Hoonigan for example, with Hert Scotto and Ken (RIP) gone it will never be the same energy much less content. Greed isn’t good and I’m glad to see people like Hert from Hoonigan and James from Donut go on and live their lives starting new channels and brands just hope they learned the lesson

Someone has to tell the truth and this video was clickbait. I don't care how many lawyers exist, trust is always the best defense and not being honest allow his cycle to continue. I officially no longer give a flunk, because you are too weak to speak up. Also it appears some have returned to Donut, so I guess life couldn't have been that bad, or they like you, are just weak pathetic pawns.

Here's a man that truly understands corporate takeovers. Glad you made a wise decision. Corps make you feel as if you are idiot and they are wise gods. They suck the life out of everyone for The Brand. We are all sick of this crap. It happens all the time with small businesses. Thanks for being honest with us and yourself. I'm sure you will be happier! Good luck!

Profits over people, sounds like capitalism at it’s finest or it’s worst, you decide? But until someone finds something better or worse, depending where you sit on which side of the wealth fence, then that’s what we’re all stuck with, unless you move to China or other communist countries. 😂

    @thecloneguyz 23 дня назад

I don't understand when all these business people somehow don't understand that they're just running something to death instead of giving us a little bit every day they do 90% on the first run and then try to sustain it and then it's unsustainable Most of these social media influencers all started the same way first you started making videos out of the love and passion for what you're doing and wanting to share it with other people and then when you start getting those Regular Ad Revenue checks then it becomes the quantity of videos and not the quality of the videos anymore and it goes downhill immediately

Let me guess, they all went full corpo and sold their soul, lost the reason why people watched them in the first place. Corpos do not get this things, they only look at trends, checklists, not leting things be. Talent normally leave and get filled up with corpo yes men or people that are hungry for money that didn't really have a passion to begin with.

why the creators actually do sell the channel they worked so hard to some shady investors? at the end its allways the same. selling the channel. then go away and start the new channel and make their own thing. why not keep the first channel???? i know it is a lot of money. but still. it looks like at the end its the same thing but with less twists. or is it that much money that you never be able to spend all of it? then i would probably do it too.

Big business needs to stay out of creative arts just go away! I love the stock market where all you need to do is throw money around to things you know nothing about and it grows. Wonderful! Thing is that it has its place. Invest in new widgets, new chemicals, tangible products etc. Treating art like a widget hurts people because that’s a persons heart and soul. The camaraderie, friendship and experiences is what life is about. These people got to do what they love and make a decent living which only made them better at what they do. When they’re treated like a widget it shows in the product. Venture capitalists think this is the new movie business but it’s not. I’m glad all these creators are jumping ship. It probably won’t (hopefully will) make them richer but success and happiness cannot be bought. Best of luck to all the creators and hosts!

I'm bookmarking this video for later reference because, even though I happen to be a car guy, everything you've said absolutely hits the nail on the head about everything that's wrong with *gestures wildly* everything in the world today. predatory capitalism, myopic goal setting, the death of expertise, focusing on ends rather than the process, the dehumanising transactional nature of everything these days. it's like half of us have forgotten our humanity. and you just summed it all up so perfectly and succinctly.
