Back in those days, many tomb stones were made of slate. As the nature of slate, any inscription wears away and is not readable. The oldest grave is likely one that cannot be read.
Not sure The Mayflower would’ve carried an American flag but hey 🤷♂️
Seeing the Standish Cemetery brought back many childhood memories. I lived in the Brewster home next to a vacant lot where the Pilgrim Meeting House once stood and next to the cemetery. The Brewster family came over in 1620. I played on those large civil war cannons as a child. It was amazing being surrounded by history growing up. You did a great job producing this video. Thank you!
1:47 can you still smell medieval 💩
Nice!
Diect descendant of Edward Doty and George Soule
That set of strange headstone, with the same names are actually two different people married to the same person. As back in those days with certain tribes, it was not uncommon for one man to have multiple wives. Kind of like my 5th or 6th great grand father who was born in 1775, who was married too 3 different women which was legal and socially acceptable.
So a boat named “Jersey” was the worst vessel ever. I guess the cursed name “Jersey” continues today although it’s prefaced with “New.” (Please don’t come after me Mr. Soprano!)
Thank you for a tour of this beautiful area!
Thanks for watching :)
Wow what a hidden gem just down the road from here in Southern Maine, thx for sharing it's know on my visit list 😅..cA
\(°o°)/
THANK YOU Peace & Enlyghtenment Alwayz Dezert-Owl from OHIO USA Author / Translator / Journalist Polymath / Professional Speaker / Available for Interviews
Every headstone had a sad or tragic day laying them down here. A world so far gone from anything we can relate to.
Astounding history being watched from Yakima Washington USA Pacific Northwest.
Took my nephew there when he was a toddler. He had always been told we came from the Warren family direct from the Mayflower on one side and Rogers possibly back to the Mayflower on the other
Great video production!
Thank you!
@@schatzsucher Your welcome!
tf you included scary music
Yeah, bad decision, this is one of my earlier videos. I hope to remix this video but the phone I shot it on id dead, I need to get it fixed.
I wonder where these horrible diseases like (Small Pocks) come from? (Probably something to do with hygiene).
It's disconcerting to see one's departure date appear on my birthday (100 years earlier)!😮
So why was that trash Standish celebrated if he was such an asshole?
I am a descendent of William White and Susanna Winslow, Mayflower passengers. William died in 1621 and was burried at Coles Hill Burial Ground, Plymouth, Massachusetts.
And what woud it take to put the proper roof back on it? Are there renderings or etchings of it? Why did they remove the roof, was it ready to fall in and they didn't want it to damage the stone?
Don’t think this is the oldest… there’s a cemetery on Martha’s Vineyard that holds people who died in the mid 17th century, the headstones all have the skull and crossbones.
I came across your channel, so glad i did, i livedd in Massachusetts many years ago, . I love our history and walking graveyards.😊 i am a fan😊.
Great vid, I wondered how it would betolike to live like that . Though also, I wondered how it was during the travel over the ocean.
Thanks for an informative video! I've always wondered what their routine was like and now I have gotten more information.
Live in Northern Illinois and the oldest grave I found was born in 1790 died in 1842. I like going out for a ride on my motorcycle and find old graveyards . Most of the old graves are early 1800's born . A lot of them are hard to read.
Thank you for sharing this video. Beautiful well kept cemetery. May they all rip. Hi from Temple Terrace Florida. 🇺🇸🇵🇷🙏
Great video! I enjoy walking in my local graveyards for exercise, but also looking at the tombstones and wondering about the people and the lives they lead and how different their times must have been. I also enjoy reading epitaphs and looking for any other clues about their lives on their tombstones. I always try to find the oldest grave in any Cemetery im in as well. The closest to my house in VT is a slate headstone from 1804.
I fell in love with that place
Saint Augustine Florida was settled in the 1500s. Oldest city in the US. Probably will find graves dating back that far there.
😢
Cool👍🏻 Ty
I am new to Massachusetts. I am fascinated by the history of pilgrims. The feeling of setting foot on a new continent for the first time.. I can relate to them.
Old settlers burial site in Lancaster MA has tombstones from 1600s. 1674 is Dorothy Prescott is readable.
The oldest graves in the usa would be american indians.
I thought the video was great till you went off on some evil whitey rant at the end.
If you can read The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ, it gives you a history of ancient Native Americans who lived in North America from 1900BC-400AD.
Any relationship to bacons castle in virginia which was the place of bacons raid in the 1600 hundreds roughly thank you 4:43
Sophia and Lewis Holmes (the parents of Sophia Ann) were cousins and fourth great grandchildren of Mayflower passenger William Brewster. There are probably other Mayflower descendants on your list. I only looked into the Holmes family, since that name sounded familiar. Jedediah Holmes was also a fourth great grandchild of William Brewster.
If my phone wasn’t dying I would be watching more
I saw your first video on mayflower cemetery .Now i love every videos of yours.I don't know why but i love watching your cemetery vlogs so much in free time.Love from Bangladesh 🇧🇩🇧🇩
Thank you for your kind words they inspire me to make more videos!
Just happened across one of your videos. I love them. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing 🙏🏻
It’s a shame you did not make it to Plympton. It was once known as west Plymouth. My pilgrims are buried in Plympton and Carver, connected towns all once known as West Plymouth. Several are from the 1600’s some my Pilgrims. William Brewster is my 10 times great grandfather. I am genetically connected to 7 other Mayflower passengers.
I will check it out. I am on the Cape so it's not far!
@@schatzsucher There are also a few Smallpox cemeteries scattered about. They were afraid to bury them near any other graves. Some of the older graves will have headstones and foot stones. The foot stones will generally only contain initials.
@@marianneprescott1497 Thanks for the info, always appreciated ✌️
This cemetery doesn’t seem to be all that ancient.
I know, right? Compared to Europe the term "Ancient" seems like a stretch, although there is an "ancient" cemetery in every MA town I've realized. Still cool though. Thanks for watching :)
It is, considering how old the U.S. is.
I love these old cemetery tours Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! I really enjoy making them as well. More to come this autumn season. The weather is is perfect for exploring graveyards this time of year :)
I love the history of the older cemeteries. Thank you 😊
Thanks for tuning in! More videos coming soon!
Yes they are foot stones
Creepy, but interesting!
thanks i was not born in those dark medieval era....so inhumane
