    I believe that is the portrait of Kat Ashley whom Elizabeth said was more of a mother to herself than Anne Boleyn ever was. Or maybe it could be Anne of Cleves, whom Elizabeth had also been close to even after the divorce from Henry.

    • @DrOwenEmmerson
      @DrOwenEmmerson Месяц назад

      @@Nana-vi4rd I have never found a source of Elizabeth stating that Katherine Astley was more of a mother to her than Anne Boleyn ever was. Can you provide the source for this? It would be highly unusual for Katherine Astley to be depicted in early 1530s fashions. Her portraiture shows her it much later attire, as we would expect. Especially since the ring was completed in the 1570s and Elizabeth is suitably attired for that period. Why would the artist depict Katherine in clothing that Elizabeth wouldn't have remembered her in? Why not in 1560s clothing? Katherine Astley also has no connection to the Phoenix emblem. Nor does Anne of Cleves. The Phoenix was Elizabeth’s personal emblem that demonstrated she had triumphantly risen from her mother’s ashes. It would be very strange to feature this explicit reference to Anne Boleyn underneath an image of Katherine Astley or Anne of Cleves.

      @@Elevendyeleven To date, only three of the fifteen-plus panel portraits labelled as Anne Boleyn have been scientifically dated, so we can't yet be sure if any date to her lifetime. We don't have any evidence to suggest that any portraits of Anne were destroyed, upon Henry’s orders or otherwise. No such orders survive in the records: the only order made was that Thomas Wolsey and Anne’s emblems be removed from Henry’s palaces in September 1536.

    What is your opinion on the tapestry at Hever that is thought to depict Anne Boleyn as a wedding guest? It does resemble her.

    • @DrOwenEmmerson
      @DrOwenEmmerson Месяц назад

      A great question! I worked with it for several years and I'm afraid that I don't think that it is likely to contain a portrait of Anne. It was created in c.1525, some ten years after Louis XII died. This calls into question why a tapestry would have been created to celebrate a very short, fruitless marriage. The clue to what the tapestry was intended to show is woven into the bride's dress. The woven inscription reads “Esther”. This tapestry is, therefore, very likely to have been depicting the marriage of Queen Esther to King Ahasuerus. It isn't impossible that this was an allegorical tapestry, depicting both Mary’s marriage and that of Esther. However, we actually have no evidence to suggest that Anne Boleyn made it to France in time for this wedding. There is no mention of her in the records at all. So this again reduces the likelihood of Anne being depicted.

    I'm not sure that a headdress is a sure way of identifying anyone, it is fashion afterall, which means it could be influenced from anywhere in the known world. If the shield could be identified, it may give more information of use. Using more concrete evidence that does not change (like the police) would be a more reliable method of identification. Eye colour, hair colour, shape of face, distinguishing marks etc. Having said that, she has a very lovely face. 😀

    • @DrOwenEmmerson
      @DrOwenEmmerson Месяц назад

      I agree that a headdress wouldn't be a good way of identifying someone. I only stated that its documented use in England and in France isnt a reason to rule it out as being her. The other aspects - the fact that it derives from a betrothal pair of portraits and feature heraldry with no link to Anne or the men in her life - are good reasons to discount her. Sadly, we don't have a universally accepted and confirmed likeness of Anne from her lifetime, so we can't compare features like blemishes etc.

    Yep - that image looks very like the stamp on ‘The Moost Happi’ medal which has been constantly pedalled as the only contemporary likeness of Anne Boleyn. She definitely wasn’t much of a looker but she made up for it by throwing a lot of tantrums and being generally unpleasant to those who didn’t share her own high opinion of herself. Wasn’t a Wyatt totes in love with the tedious old horse? Maybe he secretly commissioned a picture of Anne in her nightie and that’s why the family coat of arms was on the back of the sketch?

    • @DrOwenEmmerson
      @DrOwenEmmerson Месяц назад

      Anne was never formally betrothed to either James Butler or Henry Percy. No permission was granted by Percy’s father, nor the king. The likelihood of a betrothal portrait would be very slim. We have a confirmed likeness of both Butler and Percy, and the Van Cleve portrait doesn't resemble either man. Nor did Van Cleve ever visit England, where Anne was located when these potential matches were on the horizon.

      You're so right to bring up the Butler and Percy affairs. Sadly, the arms don't match either family and, as you say, neither reached the stage of an official betrothal. The sitter’s clothing is also closer to the 1530s in style, so later than these prospective marriages. We also have the issue that Joos Van Cleve isn't known to have visited England, where these marriage prospects were taking place. Its a conundrum!

They consistently have the same clothing and postures, however. They always credit Holbein, and the ones I find credible were done before the late 18th century. Anything from the Victorian period is usually redone to match their ideals of beauty, so I generally overlook that era. I have one of Anne from 1670. I believe this too to be Anne. She looks so much like her brother George who was also sketched by Holbein. The angle is a bit different from the other sketch of Anne and there is more detail. It is more complete as opposed to the other sketch of Anne labeled to be her. I believe Anne to be pregnant as well in the other sketch. A woman's face can change a lot during pregnancy with the added weight. And maybe Holbein sketched Anne's features a bit softer as she was pregnant or he simply hadn't gotten the chance to add the finer points of her actual face. Which raises a very interesting question: Was the image of the pregnant Anne drawn in late 1535 or early 1536 before she miscarried? That would explain it's more unfinished state as well as Anne wanting something very special and intimate for Henry, believing she would certainly deliver a son and all would be well again? Was Holbein at court at that time? Thank you!! By the way, the more complete sketch in my opinion shows Anne to appear almost a bit afraid. But in the pregnancy sketch, she appears very relaxed, she's looking down and perhaps thinking of the happy time it will be when the baby is born(hopefully the son!) It's amazing how Holbein could capture the emotion of the person in the moment. Brilliant!

The colours don't mean anything really, as pigments change/errode over time and you can only ID what colours they originally were by chemical analysis of the pigments.

    So you’re going to show loyalty to Anne with the falcon but then add Katherine’s pomegranate? I’m trying to understand the logic here… is this supposed to be done up in the style that Anne would have known as a child (in which it would make sense to pay homage to the Queen of the time, Katherine of Aragon, but then Anne wouldn’t have the falcon badge yet) or when Anne is Queen… in which case, why have pomegranates? And then a portrait of Jane in the room? Ummm…. Seems a little weird to me. I can’t imagine Thomas Boleyn keeping a portrait of the woman who supplanted his murdered daughter in his privy chamber.

    • @DrOwenEmmerson
      @DrOwenEmmerson 2 месяца назад

      Ah, so there’s a misunderstanding here about where the falcon that Anne went on to adopt as Queen derived. It forms part of the heraldry of the Butler family, her paternal ancestors. Lady Margaret Butler, co-heiress of the Earldom of Ormond and Thomas’ mother, resided with her son and his family at Hever. Thomas also used the Butler falcon in his heraldry. This room is set in the early 1520s, when Elizabeth Boleyn and her daughters were in Queen Catherine’s employ, and when Thomas had long been in service to Henry. They would absolutely have featured their sovereigns emblems alongside their most prestigious heraldry in the decor of their apartment, along with portraits of the King and Queen. That isn’t a portrait of Jane. It’s a portrait of Queen Catherine of Aragon from 1520. Hope that helps!
