A few more reasons why I still love my Roland JD800.
Last week I posted a video about the reasons I love my Roland JD800.
The JD800 excels when it comes to pads and those '90's bright, breathy, bell like sounds.
It may not have the raw 'edge' that synths like the JP8000 or Jupiter 6 and other classics have, but it can deliver some harsher, edgier stuff if needed. Certainly edgy enough for me.
The JD800 is a digital synth after all, and not everyone's cup of tea.
So here are a few more sounds that I hope you enjoy.
Disclaimer: This is not a promotional video (the product is long discontinued). It's just me having some light hearted fun, sharing about one of my favourite synthesizers.

A couple of reasons why I still love my Roland JD800 after owning one for nearly 34 years.

The JD800 was released in 1991. I have had mine since soon after its launch. Still love it, and have no plans to let it go any time soon.
"Dream" - Tony Drake with MeaCulpa. LIVE AT MILESTONE STUDIOS

In 2016, I had the privilege of performing a selection of my compositions with a live band at the legendary Milestone Studios in Cape Town, to a small audience. The audio was recorded and mixed by Jethro Harris, and Colin Brown, one of my guests, kindly filmed this from his seat. The lighting is not conducive to filming, but I am grateful to be able to share it here. Don't stop watching till yo...

I made a track using some of my favourite FREE VSTi Plugins

There are thousands of free VST instrument plugins available online for download, and many are excellent and usable. Of course, with so much to choose from, we can become paralysed wading through the many options, and end up not producing anything. This is just a simple demo, highlighting some of my 'go-to' free VSTs, and hopefully an encouragement to those on a tight budget, showing that you c...

I built this track from a Djembe groove I filmed on my mobile phone while away on a winter break at the end of June 2024. I found the Djembe in our holiday accommodation and thought to give it a shot. I took a keyboard and an iPad on holiday, and put down ideas for a whole EP/album, drawing inspiration from the surroundings and holiday vibes. Look out for the album later this year. Tracks conce...

My Korg Minilogue has been fairly idle over the last while, so I thought I would show it some love, and figure out if it should stay, or it should go. I decided it should stay.
Another Simple Jam.

Jamming on Minilogue XD, Jupiter X, and Nord Electro 5. Once again, nothing clever, just chilling and enjoying these marvellous instruments. Melodies and chords played live while filming, bass line (Minilogue XD), Pads (Jupiter x), and drums (Native Instruments Battery 4), overdubbed afterwards, played in realtime.

Roland Jupiter X - A dream comes true.
Wow this synth looks almost brand new🤩
Thanks! There is a bit of wear around the bender unit, and a few scuff marks on the rear and underside. Although it no longer leaves the studio, it gigged with me between 1991 and 2012 and got transported without a bag or flight case. I was obviously extremely careful with it, but yes, it's a miracle it never got any serious damage or wear.
I still have a Stylophone 350s
Nice❤ congrat.❤ From my point of virw not perfect Some little arrangnn.improvements
2:04: This organ pad was absolutely amzing and delicious!!!! In general, those previous keyboards had a warmth that most of the new one never be able to get!
Still a C- for the instrument but you got some great composing and patch making skills! It has its ups, but I decided to keep mine more as a controller for the JD-990 than for anything else.
Thank you, I'll take that as a compliment! :-)
@TonyDrake1960 Please do, because to my ears there are many (older) synths that are way more easy to make them sound great. Very thin sounding. I recently dropped my 800 with a friend (Rimela, here on YT) to see what he makes of it.
Is his wife in the other room listening? 'Tony? What are you doing playing those Japanese synthesizers? You know I don't like those Japanese synthesizers - we didn't invent the atom bomb for nothing. Walk the dog, or do something useful for once.'?
Haha! I'm South African, so we did not invent the atom bomb. We did do the first heart transplant though, so that should count for something. We are not good at making synths though, so I am happy to settle for the Japanese ones.... :-) ....P.S. We don't have a dog, and my wife is a bass player, so she's worse than me.
I only got close to touching the synth but not playing it. I was overjoyed to see the thing. Though seeing this video, wish I could explored all of the sounds! 😂 Ah well, sick video!
Great synth!!! I own one and also JD-990. I wanted JD-800 since it came out back in '91, but couldn' t afford it then. Bought it second hand when prices came down, and you could buy it for a fraction of original price. I will never sell it!!
Nice Finish Bro !
it was used to create faithless's insomnia
I would’ve much preferred if this synthesizer had been my first one over my actual first synth, an Alesis QS6. I did see a preowned JD-800 for sale early in 2003. I should’ve gone hungry for 2 or 3 months so I could afford to get it.
I owned an Alesis QS6.1 for a couple of years. It was a great keyboard, I thought, but very different to the JD. More of a 'rompler' in a way, and one had to do some menu diving to edit. I just used the presets really. I used it live a lot, and enjoyed some of the EP sounds (e.g. 'Ray's Rhodes') and a few others.
I love both of mine
It’s still a fantastic mean machine synthesiser and not forgetting all the editing options. I’ve not got one of these myself, sounds and looks amazing.
jd-800 vst is availible on tinternet. free if torrented
It sounds big, like the early 1990s synths such as the Korg 01/W and the later Roland JV-80. More modern synths sound more compressed and produced. That is good for a studio production, but for live use, you need the raw power of an uncompressed synth.
The JD-800 was the prototype for the later JV-80. But with complete other waveforms, so it has its own sound.
I own both and I never saw it this way. The JV-80 IMHO is very good for "acoustic" sounds while still also bearing some signature Persing designs such as Fantasia (which is called JV Fantasia).
What patches are heard in this video? Standard ones?
There are one or two factory presets, but not all. Some are edited presets, and one or two are downloaded from the net as sysx files.
Awesome beast of a synth! I got the JD-08. It is a bit crippled but I have plans to master it somehow.
JD-08 looks like a lot of fun, and you have the essence of the JD800 with more polyphony and some other cool new features. I'm sure you'll master it, and I hope it brings you much joy and it helps you make great music!
54 years? What?
34, not 54 :-)
I believe I shall be prepared because soon the Chinese music industry will get into this market as well. Nonethless when I recall the 80s I dont think sytnhs were as costy as they are target now...thanks for sharing the videos..and the SoundofMusic sound song , this particular one, still gives me goose pumps..
Yes, they were costly in the '80s...
Tony Drake, that's some good sounds you got going brother. Here's what I've got say to the JD800 haters. The only the limiting the JD800 is who's programming it. You're the best!! From a proud JD800 owner that will die with my JD800. Stay Blessed, even all you haters.
Haha! Thanks man! :-)
If I criticize it while I own one, does that cancel out the "hater" label?
Excellent tones and depth 👍🏼👍🏼⭐⭐
Superb!, great arranges. Thanks for share!
Wonderful sound!
Absolutely mesmeric tone at 1-1.30!
Very nice chords 3:36 and 04:10! greetings from Levi in Sweden
Thank you! Greetings to you to!
The first song you’re playing sounds a bit like columns on the mega drive
I'll need to check that out! I was just jamming and trying to channel my best 'J.S. Bach' hehe. I'll google 'columns on the mega drive' now. :-)
HI! I love my JD800 too, I have 2 JD800 and one JD990, great synth all over the years. This year I made on my both JD800 a full restoration, cause of RedGlue and Fader Issues. Now the work great, also in same combination with JupiterX you also use and my old analog Juno60/106/alpha2 and JX10. Love them all
Pink goo?
Yup, but I was one of the lucky ones, who contacted the local Roland agent within a grace period (17 years after purchase, astonishingly), and received a brand new replacement keybed from Roland, free of charge!
WOW! This is some great works. Great sound texture overall, great recording too. And everyone a highly skilled musician. High energy and tranquility all in the same song, that is where the magic happens.Modern instrumentals outside of classical is very rare except in the jazz and EDM worlds, but I am not a big fan of the typical jazz and don't sit down to listen to EDM. So this "smooth jazz" is the kind of music that takes my breath away and I have to sit down. Takes me back to my younger days and Spyro Gyra. I don't like pigeon holing anyone in a genre or comparing them to others, but music does sometimes strikes electric shocks at old memories that have not been thought of in decades. I can't help that. You are wonderful, and just given me waves of joy!!
Thank you for your kind words!
Yes I do love mine too, it certainly has a character when putting into a mix. Great for pads and sparkles. Not very fat or warm though, but definitely has its uses. The crystal Rhodes patch is amazing
Is the FX mainly reverb that I hear coming from the synth or outboard FX? thanks.😊
It's the built-in reverb and FX only. I recorded the synth directly into my DAW with no EQ or FX added. For its time the onboard FX were outstanding, especially having an onboard overdrive etc. Pretty standard on many synths these days, but in 1991, you got a basic reverb/delay, and maybe a chorus if you were lucky. The FX unit also featured an 'exciter'/enhancer' which gave the synth a lot of extra 'air' and sparkle as well.
@TonyDrake1960 Well it sounds great and thanks!
Kickin's studio in london had 1 .. i was impressed by the amount of sliders etc.but now i have the vst version. i think it's funny you are layering it with the other synth though.. it was a PITA to program from what i saw from others.
It can be a bit painful to programme given the use of the 4 layers/splits, etc, but it's a pretty standard setup. I did play a soft pad behind two of the 'solo' patches I was playing, yes. I was not layering per se, just giving the lead sounds some harmonic context. Well spotted though!
This is my first synth and I will never give it away. Have some of the patch cards also. Thank you for this vid.
I had it and sold it now i miss the jd
Have you had the red glue issue?
My JD800 did have the red glue problem, yes, but I was one of the lucky ones. I caught it early, when I noticed one or two notes feeling sticky around 2007. Maybe our climate here in SA helped, but thankfully the glue did not get down far enough to damage any circuitry. I contacted our local Roland agent for advice and to book it in for repairs, and they asked for my serial number, and then confirmed that Roland had manufactured replacement keybeds for the corresponding serial numbers affected, and Roland immediately shipped a replacement keybed to me in exchange for my affected one. No charge, No shipping cost either. I guess this was a very fortunate combination of Roland's support, as well as an 'on the ball' local agent who was able to recognise my problem and facilitate the replacement at no cost to myself. Astonishingly, this was circa 2008, some 17 years after purchase. Extraordinary warranty and after sales service, despite the fact that they initially messed up with a bad glue. Sadly (and understandably) this offer no longer exists, for whatever reason.
The keyboard used to make Castlevania IV, certainly.
I understand your love. For over 10 years been making beautiful music and wonderful patches on my Gaia. Last year bought a JD-08 Boutique and get to experience some of the thrill of the JD-800, but with shared envelope control :( The creativity of layers and longer list of oscillators than the standard analog list makes for some great patches. Most of us making great music with these digital synths are musician who are skilled at the keyboard and can play with both hands and make huge chords across 3 or more octaves or complex arrangements for two hands, like any pianist would.
You make an important point, and one that always needs to be considered when discussing (sometimes debating) the virtues of different types of synthesizers. There will always be differences of opinion regarding the qualities of analogue vs digital, different types of filters and sound generation methods, FM, wavetable, sampling, additive, subtractive, etc. I see a lot of guys sweeping filters and pushing synths to various limits, not unlike car enthusiasts revving their engines in the backyard, tuning, tweaking, pushing, going louder, dirtier, wider, deeper, etc. Then there are others who use their instruments in their daily workflow, from classical musicians to hardcore dubstep and electro-punk artists. Lo-fi, pop, EDM, rock, Hip-Hop, R&B, ambient, house, etc etc. Different strokes for different folks, and it's never a competition. I posted about the JD800 because of my relationship with it, how it fits into my particular workflow, and how much I love it, not because I want to claim that is the best synth around. There is no best synth. There's room for everyone. Thanks for your understanding!
@@TonyDrake1960 Agree fully. I don't understand competitions about who is the best or what is the best. Music is art, there can be no competition with art. You either have an audience or you don't. Even if you don't have a single person who likes your music, if your music makes you better person then so be it. Naturally I hope for an audience just to let me know I am contributing to the joy of the world in the music arts. Not for ego, but for companionship in the sharing and that I have some value. Can you recommend any source where patches like that can be found in sysex format. I have got jd800 and jd990 which I control from jd800.
What made it special was digital sound engine with analog style controls. Got a Jupiter 50 and miss the hands on sound editing. Other than that a really nice synth.
I remember this being behind me in the shop when I was buying my first synth. I bought a Yamaha SY85. Didn’t really pay much attention to this one, shame it was a good keyboard. I loved my SY85 so can’t complain. Them are the breaks eh.
Lovely and refreshing!
I happily sold it without regrets, today there are many more valid alternatives
Digital synths with all physical control are extremely rare. Yes, you can do more with a Fantom, but sound design takes 5 to 10 times longer and is painful compared to physical control synths.
Still sounds amazing.
This monster synth shall shine for many years from now, there is no reason why such a machine should ever become out of date. I tried it in a music shop as soon as it was released, it sounded astonishing. But then in my country the war was approaching so it was not the time for such a purchase. Anyway, roland is a manufacturer never to underestimate, their legendary products are still in game, just look at the e-bay!
Get the Boutique edition.
I know a fellow south african accent when I hear one! Awesome demo. Truly captures the spirit of the JD800.
Haha! Baie dankie! :-)
You know Roland got it right when it still sounds this good after 33 years!
I've owned one since 1991. I own 7 of them now! :-) This is an excellent demo, but it's only scratching the surface. The main thing is - all of that control x 4 - so it's so easy to develop layered sound - either the same sound layered 4 times for richness, or 4 fundamentally different sounds, and indeed a single complex sound with 4 components over velocity cross-fading. And it can be anything - a Log lowered 3 octaves for gargantuan / Epic like percussion combined with rich synth / pad textures; a low harp wit a tiny amount of Gamelan with low attack, two octaves down on medium velocities, ...... And as for combining two JD800s - it' can compete with Spectrasonics Omnisphere - at a canter!
It's a really nice sounding synth, plenty of 90's sounds
Famous Roland Classic Synths that pro musicians don't want to let go: - Jupiter-8 / Jupiter-6 / MKS-80 - Juno-106 / Juno-60 / MKS-50 - JX-8P / JX-3P / MKS-70 - D-50 / D-550 - D-20 / D-10 / D-110 - JD-800 / JD-990 - JV-90 / JV-1000 - JV-1080 / XP-80
Yup, but I guess we all have our favourites! I have a JV-1080, and won't let that go either. Never had a D-50 but wish I had. Regret letting my Juno 60 go many years ago. Had a JX-10, which was nice, but let that one go to get the JD800, which I don't really regret.
@@TonyDrake1960 Lovely! 😍
I have 17 synths and the JD would be the last to go. Nothing sounds as warm and lush and sweet.
