Tight-Quarter Maneuvering with Twin Rudders and Bow Thruster
After a sail test on the new Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 380 Performance with Marine Servicenter in Seattle, dealership owner Dan Krier described several interesting techniques for tight-quarter maneuvering on a boat with twin rudders and a bow thruster. Apologies for the wind noise!

Just a beautiful practical boat
If I had 500K eur I would buy this boat
While there’s much to like about this boat the position of the main sheet as well as the coach roof winch and line controls both make for awkward dodgers and biminis…not good for sun and rain protection…needs a better solution there. Also it needs to be in a 45´ version to reduce that boxy look. YMMV
I can understand that you are curious about a dodger or Sprayhood....but only partly….as the main idea is going in, when the weather is foul, instead of staying outside and getting wet ;-) (if you like, do have a look to ruclips.net/video/U7Qby0MZ6m4/видео.html at 05:00). So protection wise it`s not much needed as there is hardly ever coming spray back into the cockpit due to the 40cm of overhang of the roof up front which acts as a spray breaker. The hull shape helps even more as the boat do not slam. The door sits back on rubber sealants about 20cm under the overhang of the sliding hatch and could be used without opening it to go in. The decks house acts as a protection for the cockpit in terms of shelter form wind, but yes, from about 250 Sirius Decks Saloon Yachts about 5 have specified a sprayhood. A different thing is of cause a Bimini: We have options for Biminis and sun covers for partly or full sun protection. You can either opt for a freestanding, or an in an cockpit arch at the back integrated Bimini for the aft part of the cockpit above and around the helms man position. This could be extended in harbours or anchorages to cover the front part of the cockpit as well, when not sailing. Have a look at 1:00 and 1:50 onwards in: ruclips.net/video/MQgRIVw-kPg/видео.html For those seeking full sun protection everywhere in the cockpit, even while sailing, we do offer a targa style cockpit arch above the deck saloon. This has also the mainsheet attached on top which than could be operated by a remote controlled rewind winch. With this setup you could shade the full cockpit while sailing either in connection to a free standing or integrated Bimini. It’s a very nice feature for very sunny areas and living on board all year round...but works against rain as well ;-) ....and could easily closed in front with a kind of a transparent Sprayhood
Nice video, annoying music
No traveller on the mainsheet - fixed point. That's got to make downwind sailing a lot harder, no? Otherwise a dream boat really.
I personally do not like traverlers in cockpits forthe health hassard and spase you lose. Most smaller racing boats of the last 15 years have done away with them too as there are other trimming devices to twist and trim the main sail, but as a race sailer I don konw what you are looking for and why. Mainly for those seeking full sun protection everywhere in the cockpit, even while sailing, we do offer a targa style cockpit arch above the deck saloon. This has also the mainsheet attached on top (and could have a traveler) which than could be operated by a remote controlled rewind winch. With this setup you could shade the full cockpit while sailing either in connection to a free standing or integrated Bimini. It’s a very nice feature for very sunny areas and living on board all year round...but works against rain as well ;-) ....and could easily closed in front with a kind of a transparent Sprayhood...if one likes that...
Do you have to go through the forward cabin to use the head. Sucks to be stuck sleeping in there with people coming and going all night. I’d still buy one. Awesome boat. But the head thing is weird.
No, there are two heads. The one en suite to the forward cabin (or the midships cabin, if you specify it that way) is the private head of the owner. The second one is the day-head which is located in the central position right about the stb keel for very little motion at sea. It is designed with the toilet facing forward and you will sit kind of tuged in but safe even in heavy seas. It is accessable directly from the floor in front of the saloon. It also has a shower cabin included.
Sorry I got confused. Then I watched it again and realized my misunderstanding. Love these boats! @@SiriusYachts
Promo SM 🤤
I loove love love this boat.
It's pouring. I'm sure you want to move along to the interior review. A little hot coffee brewing warming the cabin. A good day for cozying up in the cabin and reading a book.
nice. i would love to live on the boat at 76 and save 3.000 . i pay hug on the apt i hate lol
Beautiful and excellent quality. Too expensive vs an Allures, Garcia, Elan for same size boat. If the Dollar gets crazy strong against the Euro in future, will consider buying one years from now.
Wow. Nice boat.
How much does one cost though?
Start from the outside and slowly walk inside i was kinda confuse as first
Looks ugly
Do these boats do ok as deepwater cruisers? Or are they mainly designed as coastal/fjord sailing? Shallow twin keels have me wondering, not having seen them before on a cruising boat. Beautiful and thoughtfully designed layout.
Yes, indeed. They were developed for this! There have been a number of curcumin-navigations on older yachts even. Some Atlantic crossings. This very 40 DS was collected by the owners in Germany and sailed straight back to Vancouver via Canary Islands, Caribbean, Panama Canal, Galapagos, Micronesia, Hawaii crossing 17.000sm.
With Sirius Yachts you can choose between various keel versions including different length of fins, real swing keels and twin keels. Performance in rough weather conditions is pending much more on the hull shape and level of weight stability, rather than the keel version you are choosing your boat in, but that`s a different question (if of interest, I am happy to explain why we did what we did). The twin keels perform likewise in rough seas as they have the same stability rating as the deeper fins. But they also carry more weight to archive this, which makes some motion even more gentle
I wish you'd also build your incredible 40DS in Brazil! There would be a flaming market for them, and would be impossible to buy as when they're imported. If anyday you want to entertain this Idea, I'm the guy! All the best, Torsten
Glad you like it! I am sorry to say that our yachts are not produced in Brazil or at any other place than here in northern Gemany. I do have heart before that Brazil seems to have very striced rules on exporting sailing yachts. I am very sorry about it. Otherwise our boats are available all around the world and been sold to 28 different countries by now.
Beautiful boat! Horrendous music!
If this had watertight compartments then it would be better than the new Amel 50. Nah, Sirius is still king!
Is there a music-free version of this video???
I would love to have a 40DS or 35DS one day but I will certainly have few extra new flags just in case someone makes videos on board, so it won't show ripped.
These boats look great but I'm worried that you get a free Torsten with every one because he is in almost every video about them.
You do!
Well he is the owner of Sirius Yachts…
Sure seems that way
That worries you? I think it is pretty incredible that he is so available.
@@alpsalishnot in reviews.
Shame about the music, it detracts from the video and it’s hard to hear the narrative. Great boat.
If I only sell my van colvic countess project boat. If I sell my tiny house aswell I'll get a clean moody 35 . If I Rob a bank this . This is the ultimate for me . A proper big boy yacht without need for rare deep mornings and lift outs and all that . I would never want a boat that can't dry out . Completely useless to me .
The Sirius 40 DS is „made in Germany“. There is no other boat you can chose so many differents interior designs.
This boat is a thing of beauty. Someday...
someday, that's what i say too... soon!!!
Why the floor produce sound?
Doesn't this boat have an aft head? Lovely overall.
Up to 700000€ and more ...
No way! 700k??? Hallberg Rassy for much less....
I notice some comments of the interior as being not to their taste "..very stark and cold. Not a lovely interior at all. ..."
Love the boat. Hate the friggin' music.
Smartly positioned and detailed yacht... green with envy
Thank you very much!!!
...if of interest: an absolutly stunning vidoe about Sailing (here not on a Sirius) in this fantastic landscape: ruclips.net/video/PRsGY-UdRgI/видео.html - under Orcas, Eagles and Grizzlys: Enjoy!

How do we access the R2AK documentary?
Joe/Barb... this is extraordinary. I appreciate what you re doing so much❤️
I like Torsten's videos. Not only does he do business, but it seems he really loves yachts and sailing. That makes boats special.
I am glad you like it! I just love what I do. I am glad you can notice this. It´s also being in the lovely position to have our boats built in the exact way I would do it for myself...and I do work for a company with 50 years of tradition and experience in doing just that. ...with this, all work related things become fun ;-)
Torsten's videos are the best on YT
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Clever design
Thanks a lot. I am glad you like it! There has gone a lot of thought and work in the design, but behind this stands a big team who all work with love and passion and thousands of owners ideas from all over the world. Lots of credit to them as well!

@@SiriusYachts thanks again. u did most comfortable sailboat for couples. Hope to have it one day.
@@ozgurdalkiran ...you are most welcome! All the best wishes to you!
Nice boat, but why are you motoring in such wonderful wind and sea conditions?
Well, I guess it´s always various things you like test and to archive. You are very welcome to come out with us in a real blow. After last year`s Southampton boat show we had two full weeks of test sails which around and above 30kn of wind on every single day. Some of those customers probably would have loved to see how she handles in a light breeze... In this very situation we had dropped the sails earlier when the wind went off and the daylight was fading fast, as well as a difficult passage approaching, when the squall hit us. If the journalist on board would had loved to try sailing again, we would have discussed this with the rest of the interested party on board. But in the circumstances, all visibility gone and all this crab pots around, I doubt that other sailors would have opted to set sails...
Depends on a lot of factors.
Is this "review" sponsored by the boat builder?
Nope, the boat builder just tried to supply nice enough dinner and breakfast on board ;-) ...or said differently: in addition to helping me sail the boat back to its customers, crew had to cope in addition with my cocking skills ;-)
How about the auto pilot? 🤔🤔🤔
What´s about it? We were running on it for a good deal of this 2 days and especially when steering from inside! Autopilots are the most essential equipment parts on board and this one had a wind vane steering as well in addition (so with no power consumption at all)

Wow ...
Thank you! Glad you like it! ...if the wow was ment to be for the boat ;-)
Yeah I like this boat, but basically, why you would need two steering weels... Where you get stable stand during heavy waves and wind? The cockpit is, in my opinion, too wide.
What's the price for the base 4-BERTH?
As prices and standard equipment’s are changing over the years and we hope this video will still be up to date in 5 years from now we try not to post prices here. But please feel free to contact us via our website www.sirius-yachts.com and get the actual price list, additionals and what the standard price contains
Wow what a cracking boat! she's a gem ................... the video was ruined by the stupid, loud background music ............. will seek alternative videos of the yacht.
Guess you have allready found this one here: ruclips.net/video/RMcxA5mDPwg/видео.html here? This one was of this very yacht: ruclips.net/video/MQgRIVw-kPg/видео.html ....there are many more and more to come ;-)
